So this Valentines I got my wife the usual boring stuff from the good husband handbook. There’s few things I hate more then spending money on gifts that are only destine to melt, die, or end up in the trash but it’s a small price to pay for some late night play. I doubt I would have actually spent the time to actually get to know & fall in love with my wife if it wasn’t for my son so I kind of felt I owed him a Valentines gift too.
I know of a few things my kid loves but not many rank as high on his list as motorcycles, trucks, & race cars. It’s kind of odd considering I ruined 2 cars before caring enough about cars to learn the oil needs to be changed. Anyway I told him as his gift I would take him & his mom to the Monster Truck show coming up & we would build a monster truck toy.
I took him to a Monster Truck show before so I knew it was a winning idea. I also had a plan for building a monster truck toy. Lowe’s & Home depot do these kids clinic’s where they allow you to bring your child in for a project. They even supply all material & tools for free. Lowe’s had 2 projects coming up. The first project was a little wooden Grave Digger truck on 2/23/2013 & the Monster Mutt truck on 3/09/2013.
So I ended up buying the $200 tickets to see a bunch of big trucks go in a circle over junk cars & figured all would be well. Then I went to sign up for the kids clinic at Lowe’s only to find out that every one in our area was filled on both dates. I really wanted to teach my kid how to use tools while doing something fun so I looked on-line but found nothing like the Lowe’s kit.
I had to share the bad news & was instantly asked why I lied. I can’t have my kid thinking I lied to him so I did what any responsible father does. I dug my own hole, deeper then even grave digger could & promised we would make a better monster truck with bigger wheels one day. As it turns out the Mystery Machine is still considered cool & “one day” actually means this weekend even though I planned to relax.
It’s kind of ironic I had to help my kid create & build something when the last thing I really built actually helped to create him. Honestly, removing that stripper pole I built back then to make room for a crib over 5 years ago was the last time I even seen my tools till now. I was impressed to find some of the tools I found in my box. I wish I could make as good as a living using my hands as I do in a cube. I guess that moment was god’s funny way of saying I had to grow up & he had other plans.
Anyway, rather then continuing to drag on this story because I’m tired I’ll end it with saying everything worked out okay. The wife is happy, the kid is happy, & I will be back at work tomorrow. I might not have gotten the chance to relax like I wanted but I’m watching this thing dry now & think showing up to Lowe’s next weekend to smash a bunch of Grave Diggers will make up for it.
