totally new question about heating

Ok so I have been wanting a snake for a long time and found that rosy boas are pretty spiffy first time snakes. So I figured "hey why not sneak one in your room?" (landlord doesn't allow pets...not that he comes around anyway). Well I have been reading and as soon as I get a job (bet you thought I was going to go ask my parents for an allowance raise didn't you...silly thing) I will probably start setting up. Well my research has come to a slight halt.

I live in CA where temps range from mid 80's and low 100's in the summer.

First question. Would I ever need to cool the tank? Most places I have read say that the warmer part of the aquarium should be around 90* which, in July, my house is well above that (no central air).

Second. Do I even need a heating pad? Like I said, our summers are pretty...well sunny, I have no a/c to cool the house so it stays around the same temp. all day, and my room hardly drops in temp. at night. Also I read that in winter to keep the tank around 55* which, sure enough, is how cold (or warm I should say) it is in the day time around here (if not in the 60s). I guess I should get one for the winter but would it need put to use in the summer?

The best thing to do is get a termomiter and keep it in youre room to get what the actual temps are.

You only want to keep rosies below room temp if you plan on over-wintering them for breeding. Otherwise the normal gradient; room temp to ~90º is the way to go.

Id also make sure that, if your landlord so chose, they dont discover this new pet (if you are that set on getting it) and then proceed to kick you out. It would be a breech of contract or whatever you might call it, and no doubt they would either toss you out ( its a snake, peoples reactions are fear based) or force you to get rid of the snake Immediately. ( have a backup plan in case this happens?)

If you cant keep one, then i suggest waiting. Stuff like that is the reason that landlords start to keep people from bringing any pets. Instead of being POSSIBLY negotiable, they say NO right off because of things like this. Ive had several landlords tell me these kinds of stories during my searches for new apartments.

The no pets clause is a sticky situation.
Here in Jersey it's extremely hard to find a landlord that allows pets...more difficult than anyplace else I've lived. In my experience, it's really only dogs and cats(or other possibly destructive animals) that are the reason for the no pets clause. Some landlords will hold you to the letter of the lease and think of 'pets' as being anything other than you that is alive.
It wouldn't hurt to ask your landlord a few questions, like, "Would it be alright if I got an aquarium or a terrarium?".
If you do decide to go for it, make sure you get a cage that is escape proof! Snakes have nothing better to do than try and find ways to escape. Just try explaining to your landlord why your next door neighbor found your snake in their living room...
Forgiveness may be easier to get than permission, but in this case, full disclosure might just be for the best.
