In short, DON'T! Email notices are to ONLY alert you of a reply to your private message or your ad on this site. Replying to the email just wastes your time as it goes NOWHERE, and probably pisses off the person you thought you replied to when they think you just ignored them. So instead of complaining to me about your messages not being replied to from this site via email, please READ that email notice that plainly states what you need to do in order to reply to who you are trying to converse with.

Yeah, I know. They are a pain in the butt. But they pay the bills to keep my server running. Just a fact of life, I am afraid.

Want to get rid of them? Simple. Just become a Contributor level member or above and they will be gone. -> Please click HERE."

Is that too much for me to ask of you to keep this site running? Well, sorry about that. I too wish I could get everything for free. But alas.....

Google Adsense ad revenue for December, 2025 was just $30 over the cost of the lease for the server running this site. So, in effect, the money providing the incentive for me to continue running this site is coming SOLELY from the paid memberships and sponsorships here. Which honestly ain't much....

I was wondering if anyone here owns bassett hounds. I would like to know more about their personalities and qualities to look for.
My son has decided he wants one this year and I want to make sure I research the breed before we try to buy one!
I would greatly appreciate any advice!!
Thanks,
Candy

I don't own them but my mom dose. She has a male and a female. If you want an obedient dog that dose your beck and call do NOT get one. If you want a dog that just lays around do NOT get one. They are very stubern, LOVE to run, LOVE to bark at the birds, the cats, at the wind and the shadows :) They are lovers they enjoy being around people all the time. Their bark (or should I say bay) is very very VERY loud and they are very VERY stubern. They HAVE to be on the leash when you go outside (unless you have a fenced back yard, then watch they dig). When they get on a smell they wont listen to you!!! They are FAST and have a mind of their own! Did I mention they shed? Oh yes just like a "big" dog. They can get up to 100 lbs, but 80 lbs for males is common. They are ankle trippers ;) They are friendly, sweet and can be great pals, but be ready to put in a LOT of time time time with them. They are very slow to house break. So be ready to have messes in your house. They do not do well as outside dogs! However with all that said they are very smart dogs. If you dont give them a job they will find trouble to get into. Make sure you get the dog from a good breeder as they can have many health problems. You have to make sure they don't jump from high places, especially when they are young, as it will mess up their back.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the info Angela. Sounds like a fun kind of dog! Ought to keep my son occupied. Never minded work, so that's not a problem.
We are looking for a female, figured she might be less tempermental than a male and a little smaller.

As stated, they are very smart which does make them stubborn. They can be very active, though this really depends on the individual IME. I know several who had no problems with house training, but this varies with each individual. They do shed, but nothing near as bad as my jack russell or my corgis. The most common complaint is the baying. If you live in a neighborhood with "fussy" neighbors, you will get complaints to animal control. It's important to keep them from getting overweight, as that will really hurt their long backs. They are just the cutest little things as pups, trying to run and tripping over their long ears!

They do come in a miniature version, by the way.

I have been trying to find a miniature basset hound. If you have any information about how to get in touch with a breeder I would really appreciate it. Thanks!!!
