    Google Adsense ad revenue for December, 2025 was just $30 over the cost of the lease for the server running this site. So, in effect, the money providing the incentive for me to continue running this site is coming SOLELY from the paid memberships and sponsorships here. Which honestly ain't much....

Boob egg hatchling advice

Hey everyone, i need some advice on how to care for a baby that hatched out of a boob egg.

It hatched on 11 Sep. And has not had its first shed yet. It did poop the other day.

When should i be worried that it might starve? I have offered it a mouse pink two days in a row now and nothing.

Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

Holy crap baskets that's tiny! I would think you may need to assist feed until it starts to eat on its own. But just remember that breeding snakes is like playing God, not every snake is going to make it, no matter how much you assist feed.
 
Wow that is crazy tiny!

I have two neonate BRB's that were born a few weeks ago that didn't absorb all of their yolks and came out very underdeveloped. I've had to assist feed, and my attempt to use mouse pinkies failed miserably, they just squished and made a mess.

I had a lot of luck using the hind leg from a f/t adult mouse - since it had a long leg bone I could push it fairly far back in their mouths, making it difficult for them to spit it out.
 
Thanks Melinda, i will try that. Force feeding a pink is no fun lol. About what time frame did you attempt to feed them?

Probably means the actual tail of an adult frozen mouse or from a frozen rat.
I have done that, myself, some years ago. Would also cut the thinner end off and just used the first portions (from the base) of the tails (wetting the tail before force feeding it).

Since those days, I changed tactics.
I purchased some different sized (metal) feeding tubes, and some syringes, to use (if/when needed) instead of actual force feeding.
I fill the syringes with a mixture of pureed pinkies and a bit of plain yogurt (sometimes adding in some egg as well). Before feeding, the air in the syringe & feeding tube needs to be expressed.
Meanwhile, I make efforts to get the baby snake eating on its own.
Eventually, the hatchling/s will start eating on its own.
Of course, as with anything, there is also a chance of failure.
BTW I only do this after it is evident that a hatchling refuses, and will continue to refuse, to feed on its own (no matter what is attempted).
 
yes that is correct....tails off bigger mice to get her started.

after seeing the pictures....wow, so beautiful. I really hope it makes it. Stick with it. Mine made it so yours can too.

I had a few breeders advise me to start 2-3 days after they were born and not bother to wait until the first shed since they were so far behind their siblings. But then, the other BRB's all took a mouse pinky before their first shed anyway, as they will often take a feeder within a few days of birth.

I found this video and used it as a guide, it's where I got the idea to use f/t mouse legs rather than pinkies.

Quick update on the Boob egg Hatchling aka...."Pencil"

Well i field dressed a mouse fuzzy lastnight, quartered it and assist feed it. I am happy to report that it took the leg quarter with very little force. After about a couple minutes of being in its mouth it went down smooth :)

I'll wait about a week to make sure it processes out good. Before i try another mouse pink.

Sweet! I'll also warn you that after the first few successful assist feedings mine put up quite a bit more fight about subsequent ones, since they were growing and getting stronger.
 
just a tip:
I found it is easier to hold on to a squirmy little snake for assist feeding when my hands are damp.
 
Poor little pencil didnt make it :( i think he was having issues digesting the food. I noticed there was no stool so i started to try and help it remove the waste. It helped some but not enough. Came home to find him dead in the tub.
