=====================

    I am still waiting on my developer to finish up on the Classifieds Control Panel so I can use it to encourage members into becoming paying members. Google Adsense has become a real burden on the viewing of this site, but honestly it is the ONLY source of income now that keeps it afloat. I tried offering disabling the ads being viewed by paying members, but apparently that is not enough incentive. Quite frankly, Google Adsense has dropped down to where it barely brings in enough daily to match even a single paid member per day. But it still gets the bills paid. But at what cost?

    So even without the classifieds control panel being complete, I believe I am going to have to disable those Google ads completely and likely disable some options here that have been free since going to the new platform. Like classified ad bumping, member name changes, and anything else I can use to encourage this site to be supported by the members instead of the Google Adsense ads.

    But there is risk involved. I will not pay out of pocket for very long during this last ditch experimental effort. If I find that the membership does not want to support this site with memberships, then I cannot support your being able to post your classified ads here for free. No, I am not intending to start charging for your posting ads here. I will just shut the site down and that will be it. I will be done with FaunaClassifieds. I certainly don't need this, and can live the rest of my life just fine without it. If I see that no one else really wants it to survive neither, then so be it. It goes away and you all can just go elsewhere to advertise your animals and merchandise.

    Not sure when this will take place, and I don't intend to give any further warning concerning the disabling of the Google Adsense. Just as there probably won't be any warning if I decide to close down this site. You will just come here and there will be some sort of message that the site is gone, and you have a nice day.

    I have been trying to make a go of this site for a very long time. And quite frankly, I am just tired of trying. I had hoped that enough people would be willing to help me help you all have a free outlet to offer your stuff for sale. But every year I see less and less people coming to this site, much less supporting it financially. That is fine. I tried. I retired the SerpenCo business about 14 years ago, so retiring out of this business completely is not that big if a step for me, nor will it be especially painful to do. When I was in Thailand, I did not check in here for three weeks. I didn't miss it even a little bit. So if you all want it to remain, it will be in your hands. I really don't care either way.

    =====================
    Some people have indicated that finding the method to contribute is rather difficult. And I have to admit, that it is not all that obvious. So to help, here is a thread to help as a quide. How to become a contributing member of FaunaClassifieds.

    And for the record, I will be shutting down the Google Adsense ads on January 1, 2025.

    In short, DON'T! Email notices are to ONLY alert you of a reply to your private message or your ad on this site. Replying to the email just wastes your time as it goes NOWHERE, and probably pisses off the person you thought you replied to when they think you just ignored them. So instead of complaining to me about your messages not being replied to from this site via email, please READ that email notice that plainly states what you need to do in order to reply to who you are trying to converse with.

I was going through some of my google adsense info (checking for ads that may be out of line for my site) and I came across this gem: http://www.geckosecretsrevealed.com/

It's as bad as reading some of the kingnsnake posts. Now this post may be more appropriate for a BOI thread but since it relates exclusively to Leos I thought I'd post it here. Since the site is actively advertising, it must be fairly new. I guess I'm just still pissed off by people like this.

I thought this website could provide a stepping stone for discussion. What can we do to prevent people from falling for stuff like this? Is there anything we can do, and if so, should we do it? How do you all help educate first-time purchasers? I'd be interested in hearing general comments on education of new leopard gecko owners as well. I haven't seen the topic pop up often anywhere.

Some of my favorite quotes from the site...

Are you making these six deadly (for your Gecko) mistakes?
Do you forget to change the UV lamp every several months?
With this *proven* step...by...step process you'll now be able to tame your gecko in NOT years but only weeks. That's right we can guarantee that this secrets process will enable you to tame your gecko in just 30 days or... less.

People might start calling you "The Leopard Gecko Whisperer" when they see how............... happy, healthy and loving and your gecko is!
Your Leopard gecko will be so relieved when he can finally feel 100% safe in your Protection because of the easy new training breakthrough.
I especially love the part about how loving and relieved your gecko will be...

Teach you what to in every situation, how to keep your gecko alive and healthy for years and teach you the secret to create an instant loving bond between you and your gecko!

I don't believe it's necessarily bad, but its generally accepted that Leopard Geckos don't need any UV if properly supplimented. I added it as a quote since it seems like much more of a scare tactic than anything.

Wow...it's like an infomercial...only you have to do more reading. Either way it still makes me want to jab something into my eyes. I'll have some optimism and...hope it's a spoof.

Funny how the person even states that placing your gecko on sand can cause impaction but if you scroll down to where it shows the part where it comes with a guide that shows you all that you need, there is a pic of sand and a heat lamp!
I really like the gecko full proof trap! LOL what a joke. That was pretty funny, really sad but funny. Shanell.

Customers have told us our price is too low. THis was good someone has been watching Ron popeil (sp?) to much.

Is this an early April Fools joke????

My favorite was your last quote... the secret to create an instant loving bond between you and your gecko! ????

Sounds kind of CREEPY????

If anyone had to write so much just to sell a "great" product it couldn't be as good as they say it is. If it was really good the advertising would prolly be a lot better, half of the words aren't even spelled right.

Educating new owners

I think they have on for Ball Pythons too. I was looking for another BP and came across it. Is it like and ebook?

Would anyone take offense if I chased them down and labeled their foreheads with the word fool with a branding iron???

I'll help you hunt them down to brand them and I'll even bring the duct tape to make sure they can't get away.

Oh man! More work for me. Now I have to block that site too out of my AdSense. I've seen that one on my AdSense but hadn't clicked on it to check it out, but now after looking at the site, I'm blocking it. :hot:

I had ad sense for like 3 months, and it sucked. I made like 3 dollars, and I had heard on a forum if you click your own link a few times that don't tell you, but they invalidate your account. So when you go for that $100.00 they tell you you broke contract. I even got an email saying they thought i was clicking my own links(which i was). So i stopped using it.

I also noticed that link, i just kind of forgot about it.

You'd have to be clinking on your own AdSense "A LOT" for them to say that. I've clicked on mine a few times to check what I'm linking too. I've collected a check about every 3 to 4 months, for the past year and a half.

I've made a decent amount that I expect to get checks every 2-3 months, but I just started. Their TOS does state that they will suspend your account if you click your own often, but they usually filter out the occasional click if you do it accidentally. I'm making enough to pay for all my hosting and domain name, with a little left over.

Jeanne, Adsense is a way to post context-based ads and get paid per click. See http://www.google.com/adsense
