In short, DON'T! Email notices are to ONLY alert you of a reply to your private message or your ad on this site. Replying to the email just wastes your time as it goes NOWHERE, and probably pisses off the person you thought you replied to when they think you just ignored them. So instead of complaining to me about your messages not being replied to from this site via email, please READ that email notice that plainly states what you need to do in order to reply to who you are trying to converse with.

Yeah, I know. They are a pain in the butt. But they pay the bills to keep my server running. Just a fact of life, I am afraid.

Want to get rid of them? Simple. Just become a Contributor level member or above and they will be gone. -> Please click HERE."

Is that too much for me to ask of you to keep this site running? Well, sorry about that. I too wish I could get everything for free. But alas.....

    =====================

Google Adsense ad revenue for December, 2025 was just $30 over the cost of the lease for the server running this site. So, in effect, the money providing the incentive for me to continue running this site is coming SOLELY from the paid memberships and sponsorships here. Which honestly ain't much....

I just wanted to see what everyone uses for flea & tick control and prevention on their dogs.

Frontline here. I love the stuff. It has made a HUGE difference with my dogs.

None.
We don't have a flea problem. And no heartworm or Lymes either.
Ticks, though can be a real issue.
I like the idea of the broadspectrum enterics most.

frontline plus is the best and i also give them an oatmeal bath monthly at work to check for fleas and any lumps or bumps that may pop up.

Thanks for the replies, everyone. I have been using the brewer's yeast with garlic tablets for flea control for years with great success, but after reading about some potential problems with the garlic ingredient, I thought it might be best to check out some other methods. I think I'll try Frontline and see how that works this year.

Mine are limited to the front yard only and we use diazinon on the grass in the front and out from the fence about 30' in all directions. No flea problems.

I did use some of the other stuff from time to time but had a bad reaction from the dog, one losing almost all of its hair where applied to an infection around the entire neck of a male within 24 hours of application.

I also use garlic powder on all food and throw a huge bag of cedar in the front yard once a week too. By the end of summer we barely even have to mow the front from all my cedar being put down lol

That's a really good idea, Wendy. My dogs go "out" in the backyard where it's really hard for anyone to see them (it took my next-door neighbors three years to realize I even had a dog) and I don't think they'd care if I dumped a bunch of cedar back there. There are SO many squirrels, rabbits, occasional 'coons and 'possums back there that I know fleas are in the area. The cedar seems like an especially good idea for the dog fence right now--we're going through the spring thaw, and well... you know what a dog yard can look like after the snow melts away. lol :ack2:

Yeah Id hate to see your back yard after a week of snow then it thaw to show what lies beneath lol

1 thing I like about the cedar is it deters the fleas, takes the poo smell away and with 2 kids they are less likely to get a shoe full of dog doo if I miss to scoop a poo, the cedar sticks to it so its less to get off the bottom of shoes lol

My vet, and several other vets I know will not give that 6 month shot anymore, they have had too many bad reations from dogs they have given it to.

Oh....and please, please, do NOT use the Hartz "spot on" flea treatment you can purchase at places like Walmart. It has been proven to be deadly....they finally took the cat version off the market, but the dog version is still being sold.

I use Frontline myself. It works very well. I tried Bio Spot last season because it is significantly cheaper (1/3 of the price), however it simply didn't work. Frontline remains effective for at least 4 weeks while we would find a flea or two a couple days after using biospot.
We have various neighborhood dogs as well as the local wildlife that come through the yard so fleas is a constant problem. Since I graze my tortoise outside I am limited as to what I can do to the yard.

We used to sell that crap at the store where I worked. A good majority of it was returned for being ineffective. There was even a special shampoo you had to buy if you were going to wash your dog so that it wouldn't affect the BioSpot's effectiveness. I never heard anything good about it, so I doubt that worked.

I tried that "Advantage" one year too, and that didn't work very well either. I won't use anything but Frontline now.
