In short, DON'T! Email notices are to ONLY alert you of a reply to your private message or your ad on this site. Replying to the email just wastes your time as it goes NOWHERE, and probably pisses off the person you thought you replied to when they think you just ignored them. So instead of complaining to me about your messages not being replied to from this site via email, please READ that email notice that plainly states what you need to do in order to reply to who you are trying to converse with.

Yeah, I know. They are a pain in the butt. But they pay the bills to keep my server running. Just a fact of life, I am afraid.

Want to get rid of them? Simple. Just become a Contributor level member or above and they will be gone. -> Please click HERE."

Is that too much for me to ask of you to keep this site running? Well, sorry about that. I too wish I could get everything for free. But alas.....

Google Adsense ad revenue for December, 2025 was just $30 over the cost of the lease for the server running this site. So, in effect, the money providing the incentive for me to continue running this site is coming SOLELY from the paid memberships and sponsorships here. Which honestly ain't much....

Hey, guys. I posted a few weeks back about my new female soaking quite a bit. Well, she did that for a day or two and then stopped so I assumed it was simply a wierd thing that I would watch. Well, I just moved her out of quarantine and found quite a few mites on the hide. I have never dealt with mites before so need some advice.

I just cleaned the entire cage in bleach/water combo. I did not keep much of any furniture in there however it is being washed as we speak. I have been told to run to Walmart and buy Repel with permethrine and use it. Do you advise this treatment or is there a better way?

I am going to soak her in warm soapy water tonight but want to make sure I nip this in the bud before it has a chance to spread to the rest of my animals. Thanks!

Bob

Forget WalMart

Forget WalMart and run out to PetCo/PetSmart or your local reptile pet store and get some Reptile Relief. It works very well!!! Just follow the directions on the bottle. It kills mites almost on contact by dehydrating them.

Permethrine works well. I use the Walgreens brand of 1% cream. It is $15 for 2 two oz bottles. You mix one 2oz bottle in one gallon of distilled water. Then just pour the mixture into a spray bottle. You can directly spray the animal and make sure you coat the entire enclosure, inside and out. Usually one treatment is enough as this stuff continues to kill after it has dried. I use it now preventatively every couple of cleanings. I have had no problems using on my very young to adult boas. The mites hate it though.... :dgrin:

I am not sure if they have them everywhere but here in Texas we have 'feed stores' where farmers and horse and cattle owners can buy feed and supplies. I recently bought a pint of 10% permethrin at a feed store for I think twelve or thirteen bucks; I use a spray container to dilute it out, as one pint will make a LOT of spray.

Lucille....what ratio do you use with the 10% spray? I've thought about using that, but wasn't certain exactly how to mix it. I use it with my horses, so it'd be convenient. :)

Never had mites here (knock on wood) but it can't hurt to think about preventive maintenance!!!

hey, are snake mites the same type of mites that people get on their scalps? can people get mites from snakes and vice versa?

No they aren't the same but the same method is used to kill both

Those little black buggers that like your snakes so well are, supposedly, reptile specific. I am however currently engaged in an ongoing disagreement with a mouse breeder who INSISTS his mice are NOT the carrier of mites that my baby snakes have gotten a couple of times soon after feeding his mice.

I can't remember the name of the little black mite that likes reptiles so well but I do know that they do not like people. They'll take a taste or two, decide you just ain't right, and move on.

I am curious about others and your experiances with mice as the host for mites. Anyone got any factual info?

My vet says that reptile mites do not like mammals but can "hitch a ride" on a feeder rodent.

Snake mites are said to be host specific although I have personally witnessed them hitch-hiking on feeder rodents. I don't know about any documented studies on the subject, but it's been one of those things that everybody just seems to be "aware" of in certain circles.

We had a situation with a pet shop several years ago in which they were sprinkling seven dust on their feeder rodents in an attempt to control mites and fleas. This of course was deadly to any snake that ingested these feeder rodents.

Any mites experts out there that can elaborate?
