In short, DON'T! Email notices are to ONLY alert you of a reply to your private message or your ad on this site. Replying to the email just wastes your time as it goes NOWHERE, and probably pisses off the person you thought you replied to when they think you just ignored them. So instead of complaining to me about your messages not being replied to from this site via email, please READ that email notice that plainly states what you need to do in order to reply to who you are trying to converse with.

Yeah, I know. They are a pain in the butt. But they pay the bills to keep my server running. Just a fact of life, I am afraid.

Want to get rid of them? Simple. Just become a Contributor level member or above and they will be gone. -> Please click HERE."

Is that too much for me to ask of you to keep this site running? Well, sorry about that. I too wish I could get everything for free. But alas.....

    =====================

Google Adsense ad revenue for December, 2025 was just $30 over the cost of the lease for the server running this site. So, in effect, the money providing the incentive for me to continue running this site is coming SOLELY from the paid memberships and sponsorships here. Which honestly ain't much....

I really want to save these guys...

I happened to see an ad today for 6 geckos. 5 of them are male, and
one is female. They have been kept together, which I know could not
have been good for them, at least not the poor female!
The person is asking $350 to $400 for the whole setup, tank heaters,
hides, dishes, whatever, but I can't really afford that much right
now They also look pretty thin to me (probably due to battling over
food) In my heart, I want to rescue them all and divide them up! The
seller and his wife are about to have a baby, and the wife wants them
out.
He has offered to sell individuals for $75, and the first male is the
one that I am most interested in. I already have a couple of rescues
and they are doing great (I've read everything possible to make sure
I am giving them the proper care) and I have a great local herp vet.

The question is, is this particular male (first one pictured) worth
that, or are any for that matter? I'm thinking of the female too, but
I don't think she is nearly worth that amount.
What morph is the first one? The others look like a mix of
patternless and normals (maybe high yellows) but I am new to this and
I don't know much about the morphs.
1st male, 6 inches long:

male 3 6 inches (way too skinny):

male 4 6 inches:

male 5 8 inches:

I've been told that none have been bred, and this is the rest of the
info I have:
"wellfirst and foremost they are all well fed they go through at
least 70 large crickets every week and they are fine in health I have
a freind who has a veternarian degree and breeds reptiles checks them
on a monthly basis as far as the whole setup that included the tank
heating lamps and pad tree branch and all geckos i might be willing
to seel separate
well i 75 each and yes they are still int he same tank they dont
fight they are pretty cool I am selling them because we have a baby
on the way and my wife wants them gone before the baby comes"

So, I am thinking that maybe someone here, near the Philadelphia area
might also be interested in helping me get these guys good homes? I
might be able to negotiate a better price if his wife wants them out
bad enough!

Male one looks like a normal tremper albino. Two males look patternless, and the female and the other look like high yellow/two look hypoish. Their color would likely look alot better if they were healthy.
Most of them look like the have stuck shed on toes and the tremper on his face and tail. Some probably will likely have missing toes.
They really don't look very well cared for, but you are probably right that they would do really well separated.
I personally wouldn't pay anything for them, they really do look like they need to be rescued.
Morph wise I don't believe any are worth 75, and they aren't even healthy.
If you do decide to get them be sure to quarantine well.
Were is this add posted?

I will tell you from experience that I bought a 26 lot of geckos like that (meaning under weight, not so healthy) for a lot less than that shipped. I was not able to many of them even once seperated, checked and treated for parasites etc. But I tried and it ended in pure heartbreak and nothing more. Well added vet expences.

I really do not think any of those leos are able to eat adult 1" crickets, if they tried they would most likely choke, too big for their size.

Id take a pass and look for healthy leos in another add!

Yeah I'm having a hard time believing any one of those geckos is eating 10 adult 1" crickets a day. Just by looking at them I bet they don't get fed much either. That's heartbreaking...

I know, I'm such a sap. I have three leos (two are rescues) and they are doing well... I'd be a fool to try to save this batch... and I really don't have the spare bucks to do it anyway. :(
I do wish people would just do a little research before collecting a bunch of pets like that!
Maybe I'll tell him to just give them to me if he doesn't find anyone to buy them. He may just get desperate enough when the baby's due date gets close.

Agreed with Sarah on pretty much all counts, they're not worth the asking price. I'd say he's trying to recoup exactly what he paid, if not make a profit.

I'm inclined to think the 70 crickets per week were shared among the geckos, and they can certainly eat more than that at 2-3 months of age (I hope that's all they are, given their size.) Our younguns can eat 3-4 per night. The info posted also made no mention of hides, humid or otherwise (unless... the tree branch...? :erm: ) Males #3&4 look dangerously skinny; a closer look shows lost toe-tips on the Tremper (one of our Trempers came to us in IDENTICAL condition... makes me so mad! ), a regrown tail on the darker patternless (hey, that does happen), and shed problems with most, if not all of them. Shed problems can usually be remedied with a little extra tlc, and lost toes just means you have to be a bit more careful with them since they can't grip. However, you also have to worry about parasites and such.

You could try educating him on their condition, and seeing if he'll bargain, but (I hate saying it, because they're living creatures we're talking about here) the money involved may not be worth it. The Tremper is a nice morph to have if you don't mind the bit of extra work he'll take, but again, not worth the $75 with the shape he's in. :shrug01:

By the way, two of our fat tails are rescues (spectacular ones, they turned out fat, sassy, and gorgeous) and our Tremper was bought mainly out of pity (she's now one of our largest adults, and has an awesome personality) so I know exactly how you feel!

Thanks so much for your input.

I decided that I would just tell him that, if he couldn't find a buyer (which he won't at those prices) to let me know and I will take them off his hands. I figure with the baby coming, his wife is probably hassling him to get rid of them. I told him to be aware that the males will begin to injure each other soon, if they haven't already, that it will get worse as they mature. The female, if she isn't killed outright by the attention form the males, is likely to become eggbound or suffer from having to lay eggs while in such condition.

I'm not sure it would be a good idea for me to even make a counter offer at this point, since I know the vet bills alone will be enough to take on.

These guys are just so easy to care for, I can't understand how people can let them go like that!

Sue

I hear you... it takes so little to maintain them after the initial setup. Unfortunately it sounds like he didn't even have the necessary information to set them up properly. It's a good thing they're still juveniles, otherwise there probably would have been casualties already.

Here's hoping he doesn't find them another uninformed owner, and that they come to you for the proper care...

I am so torn... I am trying to resist the temptation to make him a counter offer just to take them all before they are too far gone... but I really wish there were not so many males! I don't even know if his tank is big enough to use a divider with... even if it is, I'll have to make four more setups with UTH's, and all, so there would be that expense and the vet care on top of the cost of the animals. Must resist... can't save the world... must resist...

If you really want to save them you should. I passed up on saving a few and I felt bad that I did not. If you have the money and the room, its worth a try. Even if they dont make it, they had a better chance with you then with him. Good luck.

If you really feel that you want to take them, you can always set up a rack-type system for them temporarily, then purchase tanks and other items afterwards a bit at a time -- it should make the initial cost a bit more doable. All it would take is heat rope on a shelf, plastic tubs (shoebox size or a bit bigger), and makeshift hides and dishes (disposable plastic containers, flowerpot bottoms, etc). That would do in a pinch as long as the temps are right, they have what they need, and they are comfortable. Most breeders (ourselves included) use racking systems for their animals, and they're perfectly healthy and happy.

Thanks! The rack system is a great idea. I'll look into that.
I decided to wait a bit to see if the guy just turns them over... I also had another reptile rescue group with more experience contact him. Maybe he will get the message and see that his leos need some extra care, and soon!
I also answered another ad for someone giving two leos away... and they had agreed to give them to me, then the day I was to pick them up, I was told that they had both died. I really hope that was a lie to cover up for the fact that someone may have offered them money for them.
Why wait until your pets are ready to drop dead before looking for a new home for them? Sometimes people are incredibly insensitive. I'll never understand it. :hot:
