    =====================

    I am still waiting on my developer to finish up on the Classifieds Control Panel so I can use it to encourage members into becoming paying members. Google Adsense has become a real burden on the viewing of this site, but honestly it is the ONLY source of income now that keeps it afloat. I tried offering disabling the ads being viewed by paying members, but apparently that is not enough incentive. Quite frankly, Google Adsense has dropped down to where it barely brings in enough daily to match even a single paid member per day. But it still gets the bills paid. But at what cost?

    So even without the classifieds control panel being complete, I believe I am going to have to disable those Google ads completely and likely disable some options here that have been free since going to the new platform. Like classified ad bumping, member name changes, and anything else I can use to encourage this site to be supported by the members instead of the Google Adsense ads.

    But there is risk involved. I will not pay out of pocket for very long during this last ditch experimental effort. If I find that the membership does not want to support this site with memberships, then I cannot support your being able to post your classified ads here for free. No, I am not intending to start charging for your posting ads here. I will just shut the site down and that will be it. I will be done with FaunaClassifieds. I certainly don't need this, and can live the rest of my life just fine without it. If I see that no one else really wants it to survive neither, then so be it. It goes away and you all can just go elsewhere to advertise your animals and merchandise.

    Not sure when this will take place, and I don't intend to give any further warning concerning the disabling of the Google Adsense. Just as there probably won't be any warning if I decide to close down this site. You will just come here and there will be some sort of message that the site is gone, and you have a nice day.

    I have been trying to make a go of this site for a very long time. And quite frankly, I am just tired of trying. I had hoped that enough people would be willing to help me help you all have a free outlet to offer your stuff for sale. But every year I see less and less people coming to this site, much less supporting it financially. That is fine. I tried. I retired the SerpenCo business about 14 years ago, so retiring out of this business completely is not that big if a step for me, nor will it be especially painful to do. When I was in Thailand, I did not check in here for three weeks. I didn't miss it even a little bit. So if you all want it to remain, it will be in your hands. I really don't care either way.

    =====================
    Some people have indicated that finding the method to contribute is rather difficult. And I have to admit, that it is not all that obvious. So to help, here is a thread to help as a quide. How to become a contributing member of FaunaClassifieds.

    And for the record, I will be shutting down the Google Adsense ads on January 1, 2025.

What is everyone's thoughts on the impact of WC no longer allowed in the leopard gecko industry? It seems like it would (or has) very well hinder(ed) the discoveries of new genetic morphs. Or maybe there are still more than enough various bloodlines out there, that it will not effect it for some time yet? I really don't know anything about Ball Pythons, but I was reading through a book the other day, and the number of base genetic morphs discovered in just the past 10 years blows away what has been found with leo's in twice that many years. Is this due to the availablity of WC balls still available?

You make a very good point!

There are a lot of morphs with ball pythons & I think it may have a lot to do with the wild caughts that are brought in (and selective breeding programs). Although I have to say I wouldn't want leos & leo breeding to go down the same path as balls, too much garbage out there. People selling het for this & het for that at inflated prices and a portion of the time it is a scam perpetrated by those looking to make a quick buck. There is a lot of animosity going on in the ball world! That is why I stick to normals! But I would love to see a piebald leopard gecko!!! :lick:

I am all for captive breeding programs but, I am also all for the importation of wild caught animals as well..... Not only would you find new color variations and maybe some new recessive genes but you will also strengthen and diversify blood lines with new stock..... As beautiful and as healthy looking as the many generations of CBB leos in this country are they are not nearly as strong as their wild cousins...... In the wild, only the strongest of the animals live, where as, in captivity, the weaker animals and animals that would not ordinarily survive a few weeks in the wild seem to thrive pretty well in our care....... Leopard geckos are as close to being domesticated as a reptile can get in my opinion..... This can be a good thing, but I do feel there should be some wild caught animals allowed in to strengthen the species in captivity......

Why arent leopard geckos being imported any more? I would think if someone had them they would sell a lot of them. Im sure every leo breeder would want at least one or two.

I have some wild caught blood in my geckos. One of my first leos was a wild caught male, I bought him in a pet store as an adult for $50. I feel in love with him emmediatly because he was the biggest leo I'd ever seen, and the tamest too. I breed him to a captive bred female, so all of his offspring were half w/c. I still have two of his offspring, although he died. They're two males.

leo's are not being imported due to the fact of all the fighting and terrorism in the areas populated by leopard geckos. the U.S. has been inforcing no import/export from these middle eastern countries. You could get wild caught leo up til a couple of years ago but nothing since.

I have a few question regarding this thread.
First does anyone know what was the time span that wild leos were allowed to be imported?
Second does anyone have any idea of the number of animals that were imported?
If enough of them were imported shouldn't there be enough diversity of bloodlines?
Ideally wild caught animals should be introduced to any species to strengthen the bloodlines but as with many reptiles including bearded dragons- importation from their native countries is no longer allowed.
Is there really a present danger of the Leopard Gecko gene pool being so inbred that we are on the way to deformed Leos being a frightening regular occurrence??
I realize that with the quest for more intense coloration
and new morphs that a lot of line inbreeding can and does occur but then thee animals are usually out crossed to strengthen the gene pool.
I hope that this makes some sense as I have only a basic knowledge of genetics and I still have much to learn.
When i first read that father to daughter and mother to son breeding was a commonplace thing in breeding these animals to obtain desired colors and patterns-I was surprised as I had no idea that this was a safe practice in any animal.
But live and learn and as I said I still have much to learn-that is why i am a member of this forum :)

I'm not sure on the number, but one thing that does come to mind, is even if there is enough diversity, I imagine a lot of the wild caught went to pet stores right? If so, a lot of people who don't even breed leo's may have them. That coupled with the fact that a lot of people who do breed, buy their stock from other breeders. So it's almost like all breeders really are working within the same gene pool.

For example I know A&M got quite a few from Tremper. Then Tokay Dude has bought a lot from A&M. So they all bassically have the same blood. Now I am sure those breeders have and / or will outcross to somebody elses. But it almost seems like a limited amount of time before we are all within the same gene pool. I could be far off, probably am, but a thought anyway :shrug01: . It just seems ot me, that the availablity of WC would be a huge boost to the breeding industry, in both morphs and significantly stronger bloodlines.

How long ago was the importation of leo's stopped?

i do not know the number but considering wholesalers sell leos CBB normals and high yellows for around 3-5 bucks... for most importers it is not worth the effort of trying to bring in leos and the ones that do come in people are either on a waiting list or get snatched up immediately. i see the need for new blood but for the exporters whom may be paying 3 bucks a leo plus shipping paperwork blah blah blah they may already have 7 buycks in the leo or more... some feel why bother if i can just buy CBB for 3 or so bucks less

these are not exact number i just pulled em out my butt however you see the point i am making
