In short, DON'T! Email notices are to ONLY alert you of a reply to your private message or your ad on this site. Replying to the email just wastes your time as it goes NOWHERE, and probably pisses off the person you thought you replied to when they think you just ignored them. So instead of complaining to me about your messages not being replied to from this site via email, please READ that email notice that plainly states what you need to do in order to reply to who you are trying to converse with.

Yeah, I know. They are a pain in the butt. But they pay the bills to keep my server running. Just a fact of life, I am afraid.

Want to get rid of them? Simple. Just become a Contributor level member or above and they will be gone. -> Please click HERE."

Is that too much for me to ask of you to keep this site running? Well, sorry about that. I too wish I could get everything for free. But alas.....

    =====================

Google Adsense ad revenue for December, 2025 was just $30 over the cost of the lease for the server running this site. So, in effect, the money providing the incentive for me to continue running this site is coming SOLELY from the paid memberships and sponsorships here. Which honestly ain't much....

I am coming into possession of a young iguana in the near future and am in search of information. Of course, Melissa Kaplan's site seems to be the biggest and most accessible, but I've heard quite a few criticisms of her views and her site on these forums. Can anyone point me to alternative sources of reliable information on green iguana care? Or can anyone tell me exactly which pieces of information are contested so I know to what extent I can rely on her information?

Thanks!

I am still learning about iguanas as well, but if you have any questions that I can answer I would be more than happy too..

Post your questions on this forum. I am sure there are many people that are willing to help out. I have been dealing with all types of reptiles including iguanas for about 8 years.

I would like to thank the two of you for your offers of help!

I think my current small menagerie does not lend itself to me taking on an animal right now that requires as much regular attention as an iguana - the other critters might feel slighted! So I'm going to keep on doing research for a while (I know there are a number of good books out there) so that I'll feel more prepared in the future if I decide on an iguana :)

Out of all the web based informational sources, I personally like http://www.iguanaden.com for some decent and well evidenced facts. I would never recommend a single web resource as a lone source of information though.

Some of the best information I have ever gotten on iguanas came from the man who's book I quote in my signature, despite writing mostly about ants, termites and baboon troops in most of his work, the principles that Edward Wilson puts forth are of great value with any given organism you may try to keep. The understanding of the genetic basis for behavior allows you to avoid anything that says you can "train" or "tame" iguanas though. If the person writing the information fails in that basic biological principle, the remainder of their information becomes highly suspect.

I normally try to avoid iguanas, iguana related message boards and iguana owners, it's an enormous stereotype on my part but I find most of them to be among the most ignorant of reptile owners, to the point where my palms itch and I grind my teeth to nothing as they speak...

But this is a new message board, a new group of people who have shown themselves to be both educated and willing to learn what they are naive about (as I am) so I'm willing to answer iguana related questions as well.

Seamus, good that you would never recommend just one source for information, that is a very smart acknowledgment and I think most pet owners do go to several sources and weight each one.

If I remember correctly the one you cited is also one that several acknowledged expects in the field published a lengthy report on questioning his statements and presentations as they were concerned that others were being mislead by them to the detriment of iguana's
http://www.netwiz.net/~altab/

Its a long report, but I think clearly sets the facts out.

JDG,

definitely good to see you're going to do more research BEFORE you purchase that cute little green monster;) There are TOO many people out there that got into the iguana arena without having a clue what they were getting into(I did with my first one 11 years ago...geesh has it been THAT long? ;) ). Glad to see you're doing it right:D

I will be glad to offer any assistance that I can, however I am a tad bit rusty in my Green Iguana specifics since I haven't had one for a few years now, but you are definitely welcome to pick whatever is left rattling in my brain should you ever need to(just be sure to leave the marble that tells where I left my keys, ok? ;) ). I will tell you there are a couple of good books out there as you already seem to know. James Hatfield's Iguana Manual is in my opinion by far THE BEST information out there, PERIOD. I have read numerous iguana books and NOTHING can compare in my opinion. I also have a book called Iguana Iguana(author escapes me) that is pretty decent, but I don't know if it is still in print anymore. Some of the information is a little outdated I'm sure, but overall I feel it is a good care book. I admittedly haven't read the Iguanas for Dummies book that Melissa Kaplan put out. But I have read alot of the iguana info on her website, and from what I understand it is pretty much the same as the book. Her iguana info is overall pretty good, but I have a total disagreement with her politics and most of the care information she gives out on other species of herps. There was even a surprisingly good video on Green Iguana maintenance and breeding a few years back, but honestly I cannot remember who put it out(I think Zoomed, but probably wrong).

Anyway, best of luck on your research!!!

PS If you HAVE to buy an iguana, might I suggest a Cuban or a Rhino? I just like them better than Greens;) heeeheee

Cheri, while I respect and even admire a few of the people who headed that page and made those determinations, it is of note that the page was written specifically because Kevin Eagan was going after Kaplan and Henry Lizardlover on some of the old alt.pets type message boards.

If you peruse through the names at the top, you will find most of them have either participated in commercial projects with Kaplan or are known personal friends of hers.

Now THAT was a flame war with the assorted factions going back and forth accusing one another of outright animal abuse and insulting one another's families.

RE: Iguanas and flame wars

The flame wars seem to have dulled down to a quiet roar and I sure hope that trend continues. It's not good for people and especially not good for the animals!

Iguanas are the most abused of all the reptile species and there are so many folks just looking for good info who get scared away by all the politics. That's not good for anyone. Especially not for those sweet little green iglets dumped on the world from those mass farms and sold with tiny little aquariums and very bad directions from petshop clerks.

Let's try to keep politics off the boards and buried in emails so newbies and/or first-time rescuers get info, not irritated! There are far more polite ways to disagree with advice given or received.

I'm a relative newbie to iguanas so I'm looking for advice more often than giving it. I worked as a surgical vet tech for 15 years and know more about health issues than husbandry. I've only kept igs for 6 1/2 months excepting short-term rehabs of post-operative iguanas whose keepers didn't feel they could handle administering meds or liquid diets. I usually took herps home from surgeries and kept them a few days or weeks until the care regimen was finished or at least simplified. That sure doesn't make me any kind of expert.

I promise I will try to sit on my hands and just curse at the monitor if politics rears its ugly head, anyone want to join me in that pact?

... Lets try to let Webslave make the determinations about appropriate versus inappropriate posts on his own message boards...

He is not a man to stay silent when he feels something is reacing an inappropriate level and when he asks for a matter to be dropped... it gets dropped.

Not I.

There is a very important aspect to the... "politics" involved when making a determination about which sources are credible and which unreliable. When someone can be proven to have motives diametrically opposed to those which sane people hold to be true, the information they give all becomes highly suspect.

For instance... Kevin Eagan (however it may be spelled), Kaplan, Liz Palika, Henry Lizard Lover, Jennifer Sworfield and several others of similar ilk all ripped one another apart and made some really negative statements about one another. Everything from "fixing" prolapses with bolt cutters to freezing animals in order to take pictures of them. This removes a signifigant aspect of credibility from all of them involved.

I happen to like iguanaden's information, I find it to be reasonable and well evidenced, unlike that of several of his peers. I also happen to be able to look at the list of individuals who wrote the website condemning his information and realize that they are all collective individuals in "The other" camp on some major care issues.

The fact remains that there isn't a single well known iguana website avaliable with someone who actually has decent credentials and some signifigant measure of credibility as it's major informational source, it's very important to realize that and analyze Why that happens to be the case when making personal determinations about what is or is not an appropriate part of the reader's care of their own animals.

If one really wants decent information, they need to start hitting research libraries and reading the conclusions to field reports, not crappy books sold in pet stores or crappy websites created by the authors of crappy books sold in pet stores. When an open group of people are asked on a message board to make a reccomendation for internet informational sources however, the credibility of the authors involved will come into play.

Would you preffer it if the credentials and dependability of assorted websites were NOT called into play, allowing potentially negative information to be spread to naive individuals?

Seamus, take it down a notch. People just want to conversate without all the drama. She didn't say stop fighting, she just said try to keep it to emails. If we want these forums to go anywhere, we can't attack every comment. Its hard not to sometimes, but be the bigger person. Thanks.

Seamus,

I'm going to have to side with Tony and others on this. Disagreement is OK. The appearance of a personal vendetta is not. The disagreement against what someone has said is OK. The disagreement against what is said, because of whom said it, is not. Attack the facts, but not the source, please.

We have quite enough contention in the BOI, so I would prefer to have it left out of these discussion forums. There is nothing anyone can say about herps that will cause the world, as we know it, to end. So there is no reason for anyone to get their blood pressure to the 'pop' level and get everyone else going off as well.

I think everyone needs to just tone it down a bit.

I agree with Eyespy.
I too will try to keep to the husbandry and keep the politics out of it, I too was a vet tech, for mostly canines tho. I have bred and trained German Shepherd dogs. I am not so skilled in iguanas LOL, though I am getting there by just having one and reading, reading reading.
I would love to swap info and stories.
I also like a good debate, just not ALL the time. Geesh.
Would love anyone who wants to to share so we can all learn and teach together :)
