In short, DON'T! Email notices are to ONLY alert you of a reply to your private message or your ad on this site. Replying to the email just wastes your time as it goes NOWHERE, and probably pisses off the person you thought you replied to when they think you just ignored them. So instead of complaining to me about your messages not being replied to from this site via email, please READ that email notice that plainly states what you need to do in order to reply to who you are trying to converse with.

Yeah, I know. They are a pain in the butt. But they pay the bills to keep my server running. Just a fact of life, I am afraid.

Want to get rid of them? Simple. Just become a Contributor level member or above and they will be gone. -> Please click HERE."

Is that too much for me to ask of you to keep this site running? Well, sorry about that. I too wish I could get everything for free. But alas.....

Google Adsense ad revenue for December, 2025 was just $30 over the cost of the lease for the server running this site. So, in effect, the money providing the incentive for me to continue running this site is coming SOLELY from the paid memberships and sponsorships here. Which honestly ain't much....

My son and I just returned from the shelter where I adopted a medium brown and white dog who they estimated to be around 3 years old, a stray.

His adoption fee was very reasonable,(he got neautered and shots) but after I got through buying dog toys, dog shampoo, new brushes, a full new bag of Nutro, Advantage, a new crate and pad, and new matching beds for this dog and the one I already have, I will not be buying groceries for the next two weeks, lol.

My son's digital cam is not working but the new dog is homely in a cute sort of way. He is barking at the birds and reptiles, I do not think he is familiar with them.

He pissed on the shelter wall on the way out so either he was giving them a poor review or we are going to have to work on housebreaking a little

His name is Winston Petunia Hollander III; please give him a warm welcome to the family here :)

We just got back from the vet and there is good news and bad news.
The good news is that everyone agreed that Winston is a purebred English Bulldog and a nice looking one; I have been researching the breed now so I am getting to know what kind of care he needs.
The bad news is that he has an eye infection, throat infection, skin infection, fleas and a massive worm infestation. I have a ton of meds and instructions, the intial vet visit was $300 (Thank God for Visa) but the vet says that we can get these problems under control, and more good news is that he is heartworm negative.

He was so laid back during the vet visit even while he was getting atibiotic injections. He is a sweet dog and I am glad he is part of the family.

Congratulations on the new puppy... err I mean doggy, Lucille. I hope he helps you out lots with the other animal chores, and that the two of you get along well :) . That's must be kind of irritating having to spend that much $ on things that the shelter should have noticed and treated. It's good that Winston found you, because I bet a lot of people would just turn their nose up at the $300 vet bill and drive him right back to the shelter.

I'm looking forward to seeing pics of him. I haven't seen an English Bulldog in quite a while.

I think Fauna needs its own DOG FORUM! :raspberry

The people have spoken!!!!!!!!

Dear Webslave, May I please have a Dog Forum?? Oh pleeeeez pleeeez I'll be good I promise what do you say?

lol... I'm not so sure that'll get his attention Lucille. Try smoke signals. :raspberry

I do think it would be cool to have a dog forum, especially since recent dog talk seems to be encouraging former "lurkers" to be more active participants.

Besides, I bet dogs are the #1 species of pet kept by members of this forum.

Awwwwww.....congrats, Lucille!!!! English Bullies are AWESOME dogs!! I am very surprised the shelter didn't treat the problems he has.....but I'm sure you have it all covered. Skin allergies are a fairly common thing in the English, so that may be a bit of an ongoing thing, but as a rule a very easily dealt with problem. Judging by Winston's problems when you got him home, I'm guessing that he had every right to pee on the wall on his way out, heh heh heh....

And yeah..........a dog forum would be AWESOME!!!!! If'n you need help getting those smoke signals started, just let me know! ;)

There is a possibility that there will be a sub forum of the mammal forum devoted to dogs if there is enough interest as measured by threads and posts; so my advice is to tape duct tape to the pads of your fingers and keep on posting until you fall over from exhaustion

The shelter I found him at is the animal control unit of the City of Houston. They are overworked, underbudgeted, and the homeless pet problem here is enormous. Only a tiny fraction of the dogs who come in are chosen to go to the adoption center, there are just too many and not enough money. The rest are put down.

There is no money or personnel to treat the dogs. The adoption dogs get spayed/neutered, shots, and heartworm test. If they had noticed the severe worm infestation, Winston might not have been one of the lucky ones, those who are ill are usually put down.

I am getting on my soapbox for a minute here. The fault does not lie with the shelter. These people work with overwhelming waves of homeless animals that never stop. Everyone in the city of Houston has suffered severe budget cutbacks in the last few years and this department is no exception. The people there are courteous and hard working, but there is just no money for treatment.
The fault lies in owners who are irresponsible and do not spay/neuter; or who take in a puppy while it is tiny and cute and cast it out as soon as they have to begin dealing with housebreaking. I cringe every time I see someone write 'Well, we moved to a different apartment that didn't take pets and so Rover had to go'. What would you do if the apartments didn't take children?
OK, that's enough of the soapbox.

But back to the original post, for $45 I got Winston neutered, a full set of shots including rabies, a heartworm test and the first month's heartworm preventative, and a coupon so the vet exam was free (which saved me about $50 since the vet bill for the first visit was around $300.) It's a good deal, even with the expense I incurred. They just can't treat all the additional medical problems, there are too many dogs and not enough money.
