    =====================

I am still waiting on my developer to finish up on the Classifieds Control Panel so I can use it to encourage members into becoming paying members. Google Adsense has become a real burden on the viewing of this site, but honestly it is the ONLY source of income now that keeps it afloat. I tried offering disabling the ads being viewed by paying members, but apparently that is not enough incentive. Quite frankly, Google Adsense has dropped down to where it barely brings in enough daily to match even a single paid member per day. But it still gets the bills paid. But at what cost?

So even without the classifieds control panel being complete, I believe I am going to have to disable those Google ads completely and likely disable some options here that have been free since going to the new platform. Like classified ad bumping, member name changes, and anything else I can use to encourage this site to be supported by the members instead of the Google Adsense ads.

But there is risk involved. I will not pay out of pocket for very long during this last ditch experimental effort. If I find that the membership does not want to support this site with memberships, then I cannot support your being able to post your classified ads here for free. No, I am not intending to start charging for your posting ads here. I will just shut the site down and that will be it. I will be done with FaunaClassifieds. I certainly don't need this, and can live the rest of my life just fine without it. If I see that no one else really wants it to survive neither, then so be it. It goes away and you all can just go elsewhere to advertise your animals and merchandise.

Not sure when this will take place, and I don't intend to give any further warning concerning the disabling of the Google Adsense. Just as there probably won't be any warning if I decide to close down this site. You will just come here and there will be some sort of message that the site is gone, and you have a nice day.

I have been trying to make a go of this site for a very long time. And quite frankly, I am just tired of trying. I had hoped that enough people would be willing to help me help you all have a free outlet to offer your stuff for sale. But every year I see less and less people coming to this site, much less supporting it financially. That is fine. I tried. I retired the SerpenCo business about 14 years ago, so retiring out of this business completely is not that big if a step for me, nor will it be especially painful to do. When I was in Thailand, I did not check in here for three weeks. I didn't miss it even a little bit. So if you all want it to remain, it will be in your hands. I really don't care either way.

    =====================
Some people have indicated that finding the method to contribute is rather difficult. And I have to admit, that it is not all that obvious. So to help, here is a thread to help as a quide. How to become a contributing member of FaunaClassifieds.

And for the record, I will be shutting down the Google Adsense ads on January 1, 2025.

I haven't found any further information on this and don't know just how slanted the article is or whether these are more of the sneaky busts with little grounds we have been seeing in the recent past.
--------------------------------------------------------

LANSING, Mich., Jan. 22 /PRNewswire/ -- The last of misdemeanor charges are expected to be filed today against fourteen men for violating Michigan's Natural Resources and Environmental Protection Act, announced Attorney General Mike Cox.
In April, the Attorney General's office began working with officers from the Michigan Department of Natural Resources (MDNR) in a covert multi-state effort against those involved in the illegal trade of reptiles and amphibians.

Operation Slither, as it was known in Michigan, focused on reptile dealers --
also called herpeteculturists -- suspected of dealing animals illegally
captured from the wilds of Michigan, and exotic species that are otherwise
illegal for possession and sale. Collectors value reptiles based on specimen
quality and rarity. Michigan is home to more than a dozen protected reptile
species.

"Those who profit from putting Michigan's rare and protected species at risk will pay the price," Cox said.

Officers had long suspected that certain Michigan reptile dealers were trafficking in wild-caught, protected Michigan species, but the dealer network was known to be a tightly knit community. After more than a decade of unsuccessful undercover attempts, an MDNR undercover officer infiltrated the dealer network in June 2001.

The MDNR cooperated with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife officers, as federal undercover investigators were investigating similar activities in other states. The sharing of resources and evidence resulted in several cases within the State.

The maximum penalty for each count is 90 days and/or $500.00, or both. Because each turtle or snake illegally traded is an individual count, it is anticipated that fines and penalties will total thousands of dollars.

The following individuals have been charged:

H. Bernard Walter Ashley, 31, of Lansing, with 5 counts occurring in Lansing.

Michael DeCamp, 33, of Berkley, with 10 counts occurring in Berkley and 44 counts occurring in Taylor.

Guy Dunn, 32, of Belleville, with 14 counts occurring in Livonia and 3 counts in Taylor.

Roger Florian, 60, of Newport, with 35 counts occurring in Newport.

James Heffernan, 38, of Inkster, with 21 counts occurring in Taylor.

Frank Kitter, 44, of Sterling Heights, with 7 counts occurring in Livonia.

Thomas Nelson, 53, of Detroit, with 23 counts in Livonia and 51 counts occurring in Warren.

Jefferson Race, 31, of Olivet, with 2 counts occurring in Lansing, 5 counts occurring in Novi, and 2 counts occurring in Taylor.

Gordon Renaud, 53, of Southgate, with 8 counts occurring in Southgate and 7 counts occurring in Taylor.

Joel Roggelin, 46, of Morrison, OH, with 58 counts occurring in Taylor.

William Sands, 40, of Unadilla Township, with 35 counts occurring in Taylor and 4 counts occurring in Unadilla Township.

James Weiss, 22, of Ypsilanti, with 14 counts occurring in Livonia and 2 counts occurring in Novi.

Ralph Weiss, 54, of Ypsilanti Township, with 65 counts occurring in Ypsilanti Township.

They are just now getting around to charges...kinda makes you wonder about 'due process' Tom,Bill, Ralph and James I know quite well and I'll say these guys are the least threatening to the reptile trade that I can imagine.
The officers that delt with these guys probably can not even spell entrapment.
Where are the animals now??? I'll tell ya probably destroyed or frozen for evidence. Real preservation of the species here.
some animals from a high end collection were given to a humane society and adopted out
This was and is a mess.
On a different note the animal bill in Ann Arbor was dropped and I would like to say thanx to all the shop owners and hobbiests that were there speaking and sowing their knowledge with me to the mayor and his people at the caucases...Maybe we set a presidence here,....Speak up people our voices are heard.

You said they're just now getting around to charges...
Is this connected to the Ohio bust from last summer?
The wildlife guys need to work on their op names, a recent sting in the west was termed Slither as well. They sould like SpecOp wannabes.

Yes Clay
They are just now getting around to charging people and fining or whatever.
It really pisses me off that it took so long, One of the things they are trying to do is make all the people 'busted' pay for operation slither [the same one from Ohio last summer] by slpitting up the cost amongst them.
This whole thing was a joke ,and not a very funny one.

Just keep all your receipt for everything you buy, I know I did for my Black Rat Snakes [ a protected Mi. species] and do not keep them in your home. Because if your raided they will take your receipts and call them FAKE like they did James and his Father.

Clay, if you need to ask how accurate the article is just go into what they said.

1)Reptile dealer=herpetoculturist. That's funny, I believed that from the root, culture, means to create, breed, propogate and therefore refers to a reptile breeder not a dealer.

2) They had been trying to get somebody undercover for 10 years. Just a lie. This is less than a 3 year old project.

3) Tight community, that's why people in the herp industry do nothing but infight and why we have no national organization to help with situations just like this one.

4) Yes, this is the same opporation from last year that they are trying to milk for publicity to help justify their budget and payroll as they fear being cut down to nothing under a republican federal administration that is cutting the money to the states and a state government that is in crisis trying to pay for increased security at the multiplr Canadian border crossings we have and the public schools that are going down the toilet, just to name a couple.

The fail to mention that the vast majority of people in this business that were watched and that they attempted to set up, did nothing illegal and have not been charged with anything after 2 1/2-3 years of being watched, taped and photographed.

Evan Stahl

2) They had been trying to get somebody undercover for 10 years. Just a lie. This is less than a 3 year old project.
Surely you aren't suggesting the wildlife nazis would actually stoop to fabrication and distortion of the facts in order to make a case are you? :D
If Joe McCarthy were still around, he'd be leading the reptile task force for the DNR.
Besides, saying it took them 10 years to finally make the bust is like bragging about incompetence. We're not a drug cartel, and we're not hard to find.

I wonder what has been the fate of all the reptiles that were to be "held as evidence". It would surprise me if the DNR guys could keep a cornsnake alive for 7 months, let alone some of the other snakes they took.

problems

problem 1)why display contempt for law enforcement officers?
does anyone else believe that their might be herpers who are also leo's?and if that same leo/herper reads contempt displayed towards their fellow officer who do you think the leo will side with?a fellow officer or a (potential)law breaker?this contempt just fosters dissent.facts, either good or bad,are helpful.opinions belong on the editorial page.
problem 2)a lack of organization.i've never heard of an organized/political herp oriented group in michigan-or any other state for that matter.i'm talking about people who regularly contact their local & state legislaters.not a half dozen herpers who gather around & drink beer @ someones house to check out their new whatever.if you want to change the law then you need to CHANGE THE LAW.not blame the (possibly,sometimes)mis-guided people who enforce it.
probelm 3)why break the law in the first place?i don't remember how many herp species their are,but i know that there are more than any of us,on this forum, will ever see.there are a couple of michigan species that i would like to keep myself.but i am not willing to risk losing what i do have just to keep a couple of critters that i would like.remember under mi law you cannot posess protected/endangered species w/o a permit.you can show all the proof for purchase out of state you want.doesn't matter.its against the law to posses-period.and according to my,addmittedly, small attempt to aquire one its almost impossible to get one.a permit, that is.
as to the character of the accused?never met em.really i don't think it matters.if their is irrefutable proof that mother teresa was breaking the law then she should have been punished.
IF YOU DON'T LIKE THE LAW THEN WORK TO CHANGE IT!
VOTE!-TALK TO THE PEOPLE WHO MAKE THE LAW & TELL THEM WHY IT SHOULD BE CHANGED!

Well gee, where to begin with the new guy? You are obviously on the wrong site man. This is a "forum" to "discuss" and put out "opinions" on what is happening. And yet you would come on here and attack people for having an opinion? Where did I show disdain for law enforcement? I believe all the statements that I made in this thread have been in reference to an article written by a "journalist" and my comments were directed toward the "truth" they were laying out.

If you were attacking Clay for his comments than maybe you should address them to him directly as you chose to attack the three of us posting here by not doing so. But in the other direction, who are you to criticize somebody for showing disdain for law enforcement if that is what they choose to do? This country was built and exists on disagreement with and criticism of government. Get off the high horse. You are obviously a gun nut by your site address and yet you take no issue with law enforcement and government right? I bet if this was an argument over the governemnt taking your guns away you would be as anti government as it gets. The strongest voices for gun control are law enforcement officers.

On the true subject though, in the aftermath of 9-11, when the country was so focused on terrorism and security, this is what these law enforcement officers did with millions of dollars (2.1) of taxpayers money and thousands of man hours of law enforcement jobs. They cited a couple dozens citizens with misdemeanors that are pay a fine and walk offenses ($500 maximum). Do you really think for one minute that this is the right way to conduct this "operation"?

Also, how great would it have been for the authorities to come to the reptile dealers, breeders and shows and tell them about changes made to existing laws and new laws passed behind closed doors that affectively changed the rules of the game instead of doing nothing to get out the word so that the results of this "operation" would be more substantial and get them the moneis that they desperately need to keep their jobs from a state and federal government that is downsizing them for national security spending.

Have you thought about joining the John Ashcroft fan club? I'm sure they have some great pro government anti everyone else forums on that site.

I forgot, your permit info is also incorrect as I know this for a fact from the results of this investigation that I was involved in as my paperwork=proof of purchase, from sellers out of state for the animals that I have is more than enough to ensure my legal possesion. I do not know where you get your info but you are seriously misinformed. With the exception of large exotic cats, higher primates, wolves and wolf hybrids, you do not need a permit for animals that are legally purchased. And even all those animals mentioned above only became required as such about 3 or 4 years ago. Prior to that there were almost no state restrictions. Spotted turtles, blandings turtles, eastern box turtles, wood turtles, black rats, etc., etc., can all be kept as long as they were legally purchased.

last things first.my information comes from a letter i recv'd from th MiDNR after attempting to find information on how to legally keep Blandings turtles.their response was an unequivocal no.

what good can come from calling dnr officers "wildlife nazis"?your post,mr stahl, makes me believe that you think that their only job is to harass you & your friends/associates?
your more than welcome to show disdain for whomever you please.this is,as you said,America.in this country we can CHANGE the government if it goes down the wrong path.i hope thats what you were alluding to-that if we disagree with the government then we posess the power to CHANGE it.my point, which apparently needs repeating is that by making anti-leo comments you might be alienating certain herpers who might otherwise be sympathetic to your beliefs.
whose high horse?it's not illegal for me or possibly you to own a gun so why bring that up?it is,however ILLEGAL to posses a protected/endangered species in mi.HELLO!?you may have permits but did the arrested have them as well?
as for the government taking my theoretical guns away.well-i vote & belong to an ORGANIZATION that works to prevent such a thing from happening.that is what i encouraged readers,& you,to do.BECOME ORGANIZED!
have you ever checked out the fines for poachers?they are fairly lenient.generally a small fine & minimal jail time w/potential loss of what ever equipment used to do the deed.even on the national level the penalties aren't terribly high.
how much of the post Sept.11 monies do you think went into the dnr's coffers?i'll wager not a lot.
why should authorities come to you?if the sec state changes the fee amount to renew your drivers liscence do you get a notice to that effect before the bill comes?thats just another reason a mentioned a need for an ORGANIZATION.a political body just might have a newsletter to keep the members up to speed.
let me put it another way.instead of ranting about the injustice of it all why not use this incident as a learning expierience?a wake up call?put your energy into positively changing the law so that things like this don't happen again.
as for your last paragraph, well, fell free to say whatever you want.
btw what does"new guy"have to do with the price of beans in Ecuador?my opinion doesn't count because i don't post often?

Since when does the single fact that someone is a law enforcement officer place them above scrutiny?
I support and defend law enforcement officers that respect their position and use their authority to the benefit of the general public.
At the same time I will hold contempt and disdain for any officer or department that abuses that power. That goes for any part of our government.
The simple fact they are a law enforcement officer, or elected official, causes them to be held at a higher standard, and demands the scrutiny of the people. That's democracy.

The various DNR/Fish and Game agencies desperately require justification for their jobs and continued budget levels, or else their funds will be cut to provide a few more metal detectors at an airport. I have seen many instances where the facts were distorted in order to make the bust, only to later be dismissed in court while many of the confiscated animals died in the mean time.
An excellent example was a case reported on in Vivarium magazine where a Californian was permitted (i.e. in possession of a permit) to sell rosy boas. As I remember, the magazine printed a picture of the F&G officer physically stretching a young rosy so it would exceed the size limit and justify the charges. The man's collection was seized and a significant portion of them died as a result.
When someone is smuggling wildlife or shooting deer out of season, bust them, that's their job. But to have laws enacted in closet sessions, then procede to orchestrate a major operation complete with media coverage to use these laws against otherwise law abiding citizens is simply going too far. It's little more than a publicity campaign at the expense of the common man.

and if that same leo/herper reads contempt displayed towards their fellow officer who do you think the leo will side with?a fellow officer or a (potential)law breaker?
So everyone who is not a sworn officer is viewed as a potential law breaker? What force raises officers themselves above that status, are they incapable of breaking the law, or subverting it for their own ends?
And here I had the illusion we were citizens, not merely an unruly populace for whom violating the law is just a matter of time.

facts, either good or bad,are helpful.opinions belong on the editorial page
Joe Friday may have wanted "just the facts" but he didn't run an internet forum. What is a forum other than a global editorial page? Discussions limited to facts without opinion are not discussions, they are merely a series of statements. Statements can't be discussed without involving a measure of opinion.

why break the law in the first place?
Why pass a law without informing those affected and then expect them to magically become aware of it and obey?

By the way, the wildlife nazi comment was mine, not Evan's. I used the term because that's exactly what a portion of them are.
Any agency that would spend 3 years, and untelling amounts of money and man hours just to bust a few people who legally purchased some captive bred reptiles has a serious priority issue.

Ok there Jeff
scan your letter and post it, lets see this letter , it's easy to do just do it . Show us here or are you worried that your boast could be called out.
I frequent many herp shows here in Michigan, I am the ugly short guy with bugs on his arm, walk up and we will chat
By the way Jeff I have full blooded legally obtained black rat snakes. They were obtained out of state.
Another thing why sympathise with the law enforcement A$$holes that will exaggerate the the whole story[ cmon ya know they did] A rescent Ann Arbor paper in an article talking about the very topic of this thread said the enforcement officials were worried about thousands and thousands and thousands of reptiles at risk [the actual words] the article also named James and his father and a few others.
One more question Jeff ....are you affiliated with law enforcement or peta or dnr or fish & game??????

Jeff, you still sem to have a problem reading and comprehending my posts so I will assist you yet again.

1) I never called anyone a nazi. The only nazi that I am aware of in the United States at this time is Attorney General John Ashcroft who is seeking to eliminate the constitution as it stands. So grab your guns and hold on tight there gun boy.

2) I have still not said one derrogotory word about fish and wildlife or any other agents or agencies and yet you keep insisting that I did. When I state facts about there expenditures and timing of their publicity campaigns, is that attacking them and calling them names? I Think not.

3) There is not now nor has there ever been in the state of Michigan a requirement for permits for blandings turtles. They are one of the most common native turtles and due to how high the population is it can not be a justified permit animal as it is not that endangered here. If you purchase babies outside the state of Michigan from a breeder or dealer that will note on the reciept that the animals were shipped from there, you are protected under Michigan law.

Are you in law enforcement Jeff? All this gun propaganda and your unwavering lack of doubt in the agencies to do wrong are red flags. As far as harrassing me and my friends and associates, when they come to your house, seize your property illegally, do damage to your home and then not pay for repairs and do all this breaking in when they know you are out of town, let's see how you would enjoy if it happened to you Jeff. Because that is exactly what happened to some of my friends who have not committed a crime and have full documentation for everything that they are accussed of not having it for. My house was not raided and I was not questioned Jeff, simply because I do not even take a chance at breaking the law. After 3 years of being watched by several agencies and having been present at shows during raids by multiple agencies, I have repeatedly been given a clean bill of health on my legalities and sent on my way. Would it make your argument easier Jeff if I were charged with crimes and arrested?

Jeff.....
Why no responce?????
Where is this letter????
And are you gonna buy some Michigan Native Black Rats from me for your buddies this spring??? how about some baby harp seals or a few bald eagle chicks??? I hear they taste real good:dgrin:

A friend of mine will be going to court on the resulting charges of this operation next month. I will be very involved. The state tried to convince him very strongly to pay a fine so it would all go away. Instead he has retained an attorney and is going to jury trial to publicly show everyone how unjust this operation has been.

The state has a single key witness that is testfying for them against my friend. He is a long time user and seller of illegal drugs as well as the multiple times that he has been in prison for many serious felonies. If my memory is correct, I believe he has served 4 separate terms in prison for his crimes already. The time spent out of prison has been mostly on parole, probabtion and tether. He also was charged with dozens of counts in this operation and was found to have illegal guns and drugs (including 11 marajuna plants he was growing) in his house upon the entry of law enforcement. This is the quality and reliability of the state's case. To ensure his testimony they dropped the pile of charges against him and probable jail time to just a fine so that he would be in court for them.

This is the way these cases have been handled. Does this piss anyone else off?

This sounds like Bill Sands aka the CRITTERMAN

Lessee now
The rap sheet
The guns on the wall in his house
the pot plants in the backyard [heard they were in the backyard]
Yup that's William Sands
I went to the show yesterday and ol BS was there,...,?...,?...now why would ol BS tell me that he is moving to Arizona if'n he was a gonna turn evidence as you said Evan. HMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM!

Again I say HMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM!!

One more time HMMMMMMMM!!

John, I heard that he was moving to Arizona also. I have also heard him tell many people what a terrible guy my friend is, how he screwed him over and how Bill was innocent in everything.

1) My friend that Bill is badmouthing, Bill still owes a bunch of money to for animals that Bill has sold and never paid for and has made clear he will not. Bill would not have been able to exist the past couple years without my buddy giving Bill good animals on time. Time that he has never come through on. This is how Bill repays people who help him. I helped Bill quite a bit myself for years and he has never done anything for me except irritate and bad mouth me. He asks my advice and help even while he badmouths me to others behind my back. He is garbage.

2) Bill sold my friend the animals that he is being charged for. In front of witnesses' Bill told them the origin of the animals as well as telling me and others the same story. A few months later when he is in trouble, the whole story changes and now he is implicating others to save his sorry ass.

I have witnessed Bill break state and federal laws at reptile shows in Illinois. I advised him against selling animals that he illegally brought accross state lines and was attempting to sell against state laws. His response was to try to sell them to another vendor as the authorities were raiding the show so that they would go down for his crimes.

It is unfortunate for Bill that myself and others will be available to counter the information he provides as a witness and to give the jury a better idea as to his past and present behavior to discredit him as a witness. The very idea of the state using him as a witness in a case tells you how desperate they are to get an undeserved conviction using a multi convicted felon for wildlife laws, violent crimes and drugs to take the stand against a good man.

Bill has burned all of his bridges in this business and in this state. He is going to Arizona to claim a house that was left to him in a will as he has nowhere else to go. Once he walks into the courtroom, that will be the last time that anyone in this industry will ever deal with at all.
