• Responding to email notices you receive.
    **************************************************
In short, DON'T! Email notices are to ONLY alert you of a reply to your private message or your ad on this site. Replying to the email just wastes your time as it goes NOWHERE, and probably pisses off the person you thought you replied to when they think you just ignored them. So instead of complaining to me about your messages not being replied to from this site via email, please READ that email notice that plainly states what you need to do in order to reply to who you are trying to converse with.

Yeah, I know. They are a pain in the butt. But they pay the bills to keep my server running. Just a fact of life, I am afraid.

Want to get rid of them? Simple. Just become a Contributor level member or above and they will be gone. -> Please click HERE."

Is that too much for me to ask of you to keep this site running? Well, sorry about that. I too wish I could get everything for free. But alas.....

    =====================

Google Adsense ad revenue for December, 2025 was just $30 over the cost of the lease for the server running this site. So, in effect, the money providing the incentive for me to continue running this site is coming SOLELY from the paid memberships and sponsorships here. Which honestly ain't much....

New classifieds section flopped?

Who do you think posts the majority of ads? I thought they were breeders. I have, at least 50 reptile related sites (breeders, stores etc) bookmarked, yet, checking ads is the best way to see what they have currently available. Many of the breeders sites are not updated regularly, so you may miss out on something.

I definitely agree. Most breeders' websites are outdated, but calling them on the phone will get me the current list. I like talking to the person on the phone so I can get even a vague understanding of what they are like. Like I said, it is my own opinion. If you don't like it, that's great! That's the attitute that most likely created faunaclassifieds... To each his own.

Oh, another thing that faunaclassifieds could change is make it impossible for users to post replies to ads. I dislike it when I post an ad and people post replies asking questions that I've already answered in the post, or saying some derogatory statement about the animal for sale or its price.

Nevertheless, I'll stick around. :)

Well, I can see both sides to that.
Like the leaving of derogatory statements, or there is even one example of a low life, placing their ad into a post about the same kind of animals for sale, and actually stole the sale. So not being able to reply would stop that.

OTOH

When an ad is placed, say. "2.3 hypo Hondurans, $XXXX will not break up, will not ship, not looking for any trades. How many e-mails does one get saying..............."I have a (whatever) will you trade"......."how much is cost of shipping to...", "can I buy just the females" etc. being able to reply to post would leave those kind of questions in full view, and you wouldn't have to keep answering or ignoring the same kind of private e-mails over and over.

Actually Rich has kind of solved that, when you place and ad, you are able to close it, or allow posts, depending on which side of the fence you are on.

Nevertheless, I'll stick around. :) Please do, and welcome aboard.

Wow? I'll definitely look into that. It would be great if he did...

Oh, and about the plethora of questions: true. I receive them all the time, even if the ad I posted states "we do not accept trades," etc. For example, we recently had a hypomelanistic ball python for sale. We were looking into trades for a hypo 100% het for albino Colombian boa and an albino female Colombian boa. We received a few emails regarding trades that were no where close (one was a beautiful tiger retic that almost threw off pursuing that breeding project, lol). Anyway, thanks for the welcome.

Hi,

Well, please don't be offended, but you asked for opinions, right?

I'll start with the "new classifieds" section.

First of all, I think the "condition" table column can be taken out. Everyone will list their ad with "excellent" condition, whether it is or not... Second, the image thumbnails are a good idea, but they make the rows so big! This is already annoying to me. Third, I think the bidding option is a bad idea. Even if it is optional, this will get people to try to get a "deal" on an animal, rather than stick with the quality of the animal (just my opinion).

Now for the "old classifieds" section...

The "high visibility ads" are really annoying to me. I do not even look at these posts. Bold and/or colored posts would also make me think "hrmm, why are they trying to sell this animal so bad?" I just don't like over advertising, I guess. If the seller has a good quality animal, it will sell no matter what the ad looks like (well it matters a little, but you get my drift). Oh, the post icons are really, really annoying...

I don't like all the banner advertisements either.

Other than that, I'm glad that this service is provided free. You know, one of the only reasons I visit faunaclassifieds is for the Board of Inquiry. I don't really like looking at the ads (this site, and all of the other sites for the matter) because people try to oversell their animals. I like going straight to the breeder and paying for a good quality animal.

Well, there ya go. I hope I didn't offend too many people with this one...

Well the banner ads actually pay a good portion of the overhead in keeping this site up. If I were to remove them, how would you suggest that I recover that money that would be lost? You are GLAD this service is provided for free? Well do you think that will continue without the banner ads? Matter of fact, I have been toying around with charging a small membership fee, for a number of reasons, not the least of which is that the money being brought in from banner ads and those line item classified ad highlights, is really not bringing in the bacon. If you think I get everything needed to run this site for free, then you have a pretty inrealistic understanding about how all of this works.

the only problem i have with it (as well as the new photo galleries) is that when you view new posts, nothing from those sections are listed.
i like to be able to click my little button and "see" (scan through the posts and ads and skip what i dont like and read what i like or am interested in) what is new for the day and not have to hunt and peck for it..... i only read the classifieds at fauna... (however for a week last week when i could not acess fauna, i was bored to tears and forced to read kingsnakes ads... which i have not looked at in ages). i think if you make it and i am using this term losely so dont jump my butt difficult for people to browse then you will lose people using and viewing the classified ads...... the one thing about fauna that has been so great is it's ease to use and the fact its a totally different format than any of the "bigger" sites and then of course integrading the classified control panel ,through the user CP, to the new classified sections
to be honest i posted a couple of things in the new classifieds area, they got very few views... i myself do not even go to the new classifieds or to the new photo galleries... (it's the view new post thingie again)

Robin, that is because the *new* classifieds system is really not a part of FaunaClassifieds message board database. It is a separate database that is loosely tied to this system here. As such, those ads do not appear as messages or threads that are in the database. The new system was simply linked in here to provide connectivity with the user registration system so that users registered here would already be registered with that system.

Same thing with the photo gallery. They are NOT extensions of vBulletin. They are completely separate systems that are linked together via the registration system. That's all.

I hate change~ Thats why I've not been using the new system. If you made it so I couldn't use the old system anymore I would learn how to use the new system. I eventually learned how to use this v-bulletin thread structure (for those that don't remember~ Rich used to have cornsnakes.com on a thread structure similair to the one KS uses) It seems it's important to you so I will go out of my way to learn to use it now too (when I have time~ I swear! I'll *try* to keep the cussing to a minimum!!)

I actually think it would be better if you went to paid subscription for the classifieds~ I always feel a bit uncomfortable if I bump an add so it's more visible at the top~ if I were paying for the service I would feel fine with relisting once a day!
