    Google Adsense ad revenue for December, 2025 was just $30 over the cost of the lease for the server running this site. So, in effect, the money providing the incentive for me to continue running this site is coming SOLELY from the paid memberships and sponsorships here. Which honestly ain't much....

Well, I broke down and got Myself another APBT. :dgrin:
I have been dogless for over a year now, and being a pitt bull fan, I saw this one in a pen with her mom while working, and the owner came out and did nothing but brag about what a great fighter her dad is, and what great fighters she will produce. Really sorta pissed me off.
Long story short, I talked him down to a hundred bucks, (that's what I had) and took her home. I couldn't let her end up a fighter, or a breeder for this purpose. This idiot actually got mad when I told Him she would be spayed, and turned into a spoiled rotten house dog, because I do not support fighting of dogs or roosters to satisfy peoples blood lusts.
Got Me a good little dog though. :D I have dubbed her Satanica. That is her attitude for the moment, it may change later on. She is nice and sassy, and already talking back to Me. (My kinda girl) :)

I understand your compassion for the little pup. I hope you go one step further and turn in the person who sold her to you. Even if your area isn't one to initiate investigations, you'll have done your part. It's horrific that he's making money by breeding fighting dogs :angry:

Since she is from fighting stock, I hope you take every possible measure to train her sufficiently. Even with exceptional care and obedience training, you're going to need to be extremely cautious. It's a shame, because it's not her fault.

Good luck with her! She really is beautiful, and I know she'll have a much brighter future and happier life because of you.

Well, I've been down that road of turning them in. Unfortunately, here in Texas, it is perfectly legal to breed dogs and roosters for fighting purposes. You have to catch them in the act of fighting them to get anything done.

But I am with the local wildlife rescue org. and I have notified them, and Ramon Acosta, the director of the animal control out here. They know of it, but like I said, until they actually break the law, nothing can be done. Really sad, because of our close proximity to the Mexican border, they are often bred here, and taken over there to fight. Neither side will put a stop to it, it seems.

As for he training...........Of course. :) She is only 10 weeks right now though. I'll give her a month to adjust to what a house is, than I will begin in earnest. All My dogs have had the basic training. (Come, stay, sit, down, etc.) And I take measures to socialize them, especially the pits due to their nature. I had a pit once that I could call out of a fight just by saying her name. Found that out by accident one day. Cool huh.

Anyway, She is in good hands now. She is settling in and has informed Me that My seat is now hers. And man, she snored louder than Me all night. LOL

She is beautiful. You can see it in her eyes, she was meant for so much more than what her "breeder" had in mind for her.

Pit Bulls are wonderful dogs, so loving, so misunderstood. We no longer have one, because we feared for THEIR safety. Yes, they were well trained and socialized.....but it seems too many just don't understand them, fear them for no rational reason. Every town around me has banned them.....for no reason. In fact, a wonderful young man moved here last spring with his 2 Pit Bulls....they were very well trained, very friendly, and he was a RESPONSIBLE owner. They told him he had to get rid of them....he quit the job he moved here to take, packed up and left. If only more people cared so much for their animals.....

Thanks Cathy. I know they are great dogs. This will be My sixth one. It is a shame they are starting to outlaw them in so many places due to people fighting them.
She has already begun her social lessons. That's a key ingredient to a good pit bull. IMO I have decided to go with Satanica, and Sati for short. (long A)

We took ours to "official" obedience classes as well as the typical home training we do. We took them as much for the people we saw there as for the dogs themselves, I guess we used them as a sort of "good will ambassador". The first class we went to, the fisrt thing we were asked was if we thought she would need a muzzle....ARGH. But our Rainy finished at almost the top of her class....the only thing she just couldn't master in that first session was the proper "finish" on her recall. But she did manage to make a lot of friends there, 2 and 4 leggers. ;)

If we could just educate more people.....but too many people are all too happy ignorant of what wonderful dogs they are. My Mom was scared of Pit Bulls until she met the big brindle boy my ol man had when I first met him....after that, she was sold on them, lol. Sometimes, that's all it takes!

I'm sure glad Sati found a wonderful "Dad" to appreciate and love her!
 
I am all for the education, but like you said, they are too happily ignorant. Out here it is a bad problem for most of the people out here feel....... "they are just animals" like no feelings or individual personalities or any of the things that make them family if given the right conditions.

As for training, My mom used to obedience train and show her Australian shepards, so I picked up enough growing up to do most on My own. I do have a friend with a training school though. Actually, he just left town to go pick up his new rottie pup. Maybe I'll talk to him about training the two together.

Anyway, thanks for the nice comments. She's already in my heart, so that's all she wrote. LOL

I used to show my Rotties and I took a few of them to classes but I found that I knew more from reading books and the shows obedience trials than they taught for $250.

Ill wait and see if we have ny problems with ours, if we do them Ill get a trainer but so far sheis pretty good. Didn't even hear her make a noise other than snoring all night for over a week. She goes with us to take Cody to school and pick him up mostdays and she loves that lol

Isn't it funny how 1 lookinthe eyes can steal your heart away!

I used to show in obedience as well, but we just figured it was added socialization and "exposure" for our girls to take them to the classes. I also used to take them with me to help when I taught 4H obedience classes also. Luckily, the classes around here were only $40 for a 10 week session! Wow, I can't believe that you have to pay $250 for obedience classes, Wendy! Jeez, and people wonder why there are so many people who don't know how to properly train their dogs....at those prices, who can afford to take them???

I'm hooked on her already. :rolleyes: I just hope she gets over this "have to be next to you" stuff soon. It is heart wrenching to hear her wail (("it's burning us") a little golem for you) when I have to go to work in the morning. And when I get home, she is still going strong. Poor thing. LOL
She seems smart though. I think she'll figure it out. In the 5 days I've had her, she already sits more than 1/2 the time with only being told once. Not bad for an 11 week old puppy. :D

Thanks again for all the nice replies, and the results have come back from the lab, and surprisingly, she has no parasites. Cool! After seeing the conditions they were kept in, I figured worms were a certainty.

lol Cat it is bad here, we have a $40 or $50 class but its a 1 day thing, I think its 4 hours 1 time. There is a guy here who does excellent training but you have to leave your dog with him for 6 weeks and the first 3 weeks you can't even visit then you get to go all day the next 3 weeks to learn the commands. He charges aything from a grand and up. Ive senn the dogs he has tranined in obed trials but Id never leave my dog with anyone for that long and not be able to see them daily.

Yeah, me too. I have talked to trainers who go that route, and they all say it is "because the owners will not enforce the commands for the first few weeks, until they (the dogs) learn them better."
But I always got the impression.... maybe somethings they don't want you to see??? No accusations, just protective father stuff. LOL
But it is the reason I would not do it either. I figure the dog needs to learn the commands from ME, the person who will be working with them the rest of their lives. Just My taste.

yes Rick, that exactly my thing, what are they goign to do to my sweet doggie that I won't see! And this guy does all German, I mix itup a ton and even use fake words for a command. Whats the point of training a dog in german if every trainer and every owner that their dog was trained in german knows those commands lol
 
OT but, I don't use any German My self. Lost all that when a child. Haven't spoken a German word since i was 9-10 yrs old. I doubt if I can even remember any. LOL
I just use basic commands accompanied by hand signals. I know they are common, but I have found that most dogs wont obey a command given by other than their master anyway. (So far that is.) LOL

I see both of your points about leaving a dog with the trainer......I could never do it with one of mine either, but when I used to do some show handling, I always required that the dog had to stay with me for at least 30 days before the first show they wanted them entered in, preferably 60 days if was a "coated" dog (I used to handle some Cockers). That was a bit of a different scenario though....not only was I training the dog, I also was responsible for the condition of the dog and coat (ever try to show-ready a Cocker Spaniel that no one has combed out properly in a month??? eesch!) I had a Frenchie I used to handle that would always get way overweight every time she went home, lol....then I got to be the evil one to put her on a diet and get her back in shape..... ;)

The obedience classes around here......basic adult obedience was about $45 last I knew, and that included a 1 hour class per week for 10 weeks, plus a "graduation" obedience match with prizes. The puppy classes were cheaper, and they had conformation classes as well. When I was a member of the kennel club, I got them FREE.....but then you always got stuck stewarding and/or feeding the judges at the shows, lol.
 
Well, I may end up seeking some professional advice anyway, for a "protectiveness" issue we experienced recently. LOL

My friend Grim comes over and plays with her a little bit here and there. That's all she ever wants to do. Last nite, He comes over, I holler "come on in". He decides to play with her by opening the door quickly and stomping his foot when He entered. What happened next totally shocked the crap outa Me.

In like 1 second flat she raised her hackles, roared a fierce snarl like she was 200 lbs, lept off the couch at him and latched onto his leg above the ankle. SHE ACTUALLY BIT HIM!! And it left holes!
She is only going on 4 months. Puppies are not supposed to act that way. I have had 4 pitts that I raised from lil puppies, and as puppies, they acted like puppies do. Submissive.

She calmed down as soon as I could react and call her to Me, but that was actually kind of scary. And FAST!! Anyone have any advice? LOL
She socializes just fine, and likes people, and loves children, and cashiers with treats. :D She has displayed no agression in public at all.
