In short, DON'T! Email notices are to ONLY alert you of a reply to your private message or your ad on this site. Replying to the email just wastes your time as it goes NOWHERE, and probably pisses off the person you thought you replied to when they think you just ignored them. So instead of complaining to me about your messages not being replied to from this site via email, please READ that email notice that plainly states what you need to do in order to reply to who you are trying to converse with.

Yeah, I know. They are a pain in the butt. But they pay the bills to keep my server running. Just a fact of life, I am afraid.

Want to get rid of them? Simple. Just become a Contributor level member or above and they will be gone. -> Please click HERE."

Is that too much for me to ask of you to keep this site running? Well, sorry about that. I too wish I could get everything for free. But alas.....

    Addendum: 01/10/2026
    =====================

Google Adsense ad revenue for December, 2025 was just $30 over the cost of the lease for the server running this site. So, in effect, the money providing the incentive for me to continue running this site is coming SOLELY from the paid memberships and sponsorships here. Which honestly ain't much....

NEWLY IMPLEMENTED picture quota?!?

so apparently i can't post pictures on this forum anymore because theres a new limit of only a couple megabytes and ive already posted 30 something megabytes in my 3 years ive been frequenting this site.

i guess ill have to take my pictures to herpportal.com from now on. hopefully they wont follow suit and implement a paid membership tactic like this one.

:hot: :censored: :hot:

I don't really know about the picture quota, but you could always just create a photobucket account. Its free and you can upload your pics there then post them.

Or you could pony up the cost of a meal in a decent restaurant one a year and increase your limit while you actually support the site and the bandwidth costs to host the pictures.

or we could not be sarcastic about it and not hassle someone into becoming a subscriber/supporter.

Clay was merely stating a fact. Pointing out the benefits of membership is not hassling. Chad said he was taking his pictures down the road already. He can simply delete his older pictures as well, and then he wouldn’t have to worry about it.

don't you think 2 megabytes is pretty small?

when i joined this forum it was free. noone told me that i'd have to eventually pay anywhere from $10-$250 a year just to continue to use a service that was once free.

i'd rather leave up the pictures that i've already uploaded and simply move to a site that offers the same services for free.

Nothing wrong with letting the guy know there are other options. One doesn't have to be a subscriber, but what is wrong with at least "supporting" a site? Geez, 30 mb of free space, that's more photos than I'm able to load at several forums I belong to (not just reptile related either). You don't want to "support" a site why even be here? and support is not always financial, it can be just being positive about a site, or appreciating what one does get to do. Every site has pros and cons, there are sites that allow more photos, but there is really nobody to look at them. As many have noticed, I have not renewed my paid membership, but I still like the members here, and the ability to post photos and "talk" to others with related interests, so I'm not going to whine about having to "support" the site. I'm free to go to other forums AS ARE YOU.

There's not a sarcastic word in my statement. Just a simple fact. As far as hassling him to become a subscriber, I wasn't doing that either. I could honestly care less if he subscribed or not, I doubt anyone will miss the leopard gecko pics less than I would since it's one forum I almost never bother with.
The original post was merely an "I'll take my ball and play somewhere else" post we've all seen before. So take the ball and go, no big deal. He just wanted to let Rich and everyone else know that he was leaving and it was because of the $10 or whatever. I'll teach Rich, I'll just offer my participation to another site where I can use their services for nothing in return either. I'm sure Rich is pacing the floor over that as I type this.

How dare Rich think he shouldn't shoulder the entire cost of this site as a public service to the rest of the herp community. He should feel lucky we even take the time to come here, to think we should actually pay something is rediculous.
What was once free should always be free regardless of the fact the server space and bandwidth has quadrupled in the last 3 years.
The nerve of some people.....

And yes Tom, there was sarcasm in this post, just to make sure we're all clear on that :dgrin:

Right now the attachments on this one site consume 1.4 gigabytes of my server. That does not include the images in the photo gallery, nor those images used in the classifieds script. Bandwidth is around 140 gigabytes per month, which does not include some of the off server utilities for banner ads and the GGC banners.

If someone here finds the limits on their posting images to be restricting, then they are certainly free to go elsewhere that they feel is more suitable to their needs.

Truly, I am really very sorry that you feel you should have UNLIMITED resources available at your beck and call for free, and I am unable to meet your demands.

But, just imagine, for only $10 per year you could get 2.5 times the amount of attachment space that you get for free. Imagine that........

Oh believe me I picked up on it. It was evident from the first sentence. I guess its feasible for someone with a job to do. Every penny I have goes to my either my geckos, my computer, or saving for a car.

yeah but now, I've even exceded my limit and there's no way for me to delete old pics, which I would gladly do to continue to post new pics of my beautiful babies, after all I do have my eggs hatching next month. I plan on increasing my membership soon so that I haev more of a picture limit, but until that is possible (after that $500 vet bill it'll take a while) I've got to open up that account at that other site. I wish there was a way I could delete all those old pics that no one looks at now

Well, let's see. As a paid Participant here, you have the ability to upload 2.5 megs of images directly into the posts you make. You also have 5 megabytes of photo storage available in the photo gallery, from which you can link the photographs directly into your posts. 7.5 megabytes is not ENOUGHfor you? :ack2:

There are 3,926 photographs posted in the photo gallery consuming 505.9 megabytes of disk space. That averages out to about 129K per photograph. With 7.5 megabytes available to you, you can post an average of 58 photographs.

Heck, I don't know, for $10 a year, I think that is more then fair, don't you?

If you want to post more photographs then that, you can either go to a higher membership level, or else host the photographs on your own webspace and simply link them here.

Let's face it, sooner or later I will have to spend the money for a larger hard drive because I just ran out of room on the old one. Who is going to pay for it? Who SHOULD pay for it?

Rich...

I totally understand and relate, I run a small community group and as a part of it I was letting people have galleries with no limits on pic size or numbers. As the membership grew I could see this could quickly become problematic. So like you I have now instituted a members only policy for galleries and onsite storage. So far the pics posted in the threads hasn't created that large of an issue, but I can see where they could be an issue on a site this size....

You are not only in your rights, but are being more than generous in offering what you do offer for such a nominal fee...

People really have no concept as to the amount of time and money it takes to keep a good community site floating... well... some people don't!

okay seeing as this NEW limit of yours isnt even mentioned in the breakdown of the memberships, what do i get space wise with each membership?

I have to agree with Cory on this one. 10.00 a year is not much to ask for what you are getting.

The question I have is as it as been suggested to use a photobucket account, does this still tax on the space requirements for you Rich? I am only asking because I really don't know how it all works.

It does seem like a logical solution to just create a photobucket account. Just my two cents no offense meant towards anyone.

It still draws on the bandwidth of the site... but not the storage limits....

Chad, the details are available at this link Table of paid memberships
Also thought I would mention... this is not a new set up. It has been in place for over a year now. I know this because I just renewed my membership. LOL

no. i already have 30+ megabytes. it wouldnt make a difference.

$10 a year is a great price and after i move and get a new computer i will become a paid member. There is no point in doing it now because i may be computerless for awhile after i move because my computer died and i have been using my moms
I think it is well worth the 10 bucks just to suport the site.
