    Google Adsense ad revenue for December, 2025 was just $30 over the cost of the lease for the server running this site. So, in effect, the money providing the incentive for me to continue running this site is coming SOLELY from the paid memberships and sponsorships here. Which honestly ain't much....

Retained eye cap, or injury?

So far my snake has been through a few sheds, and the blue dot in the center of my snake's eye is still there. According to the appearance of the skin, the eye caps did shed too.

What do you think? Did the snake sustain an injury, or could it been born with something that resulted in it eventually becoming blind? I've happened to just notice it one day. She wasn't brought like this. Initially I thought it was normal, but it's still here.

She was purchased as a sub-adult, and I've owned her for a few years now.

She's a Black Rat Snake.

I’m no expert but if you’re unsure it’s simple enough to soak the snake for 25 minutes in a container with a lid ( water at about 87F ) - air holes in the lid .
Also keep your eyes on it so it doesn’t escape . They panic for about 5 seconds then settle down .

Then wrap it up in a very damp , rough textured towel and let it wriggle around .

Apply very , very gentle pressure to the head region and any retained eyecaps will normally come off on the towel .

Nope, it hasn't. I did a Google search and compared her to snakes with cataracts, and her eye does indeed look like theirs. How concern should I be? I've never heard about cataracts in reptiles until now.

Just wondering if they may be the top pair but there’s an old pair still underneath ?

See if the pupil reacts to a strong light source. It may be blind.
 
It sounds like this is just the one eye, correct? if so, I agree she may be blind in that eye, but I've had a one-eyed snake before and it's not a major handicap for them.
