In short, DON'T! Email notices are to ONLY alert you of a reply to your private message or your ad on this site. Replying to the email just wastes your time as it goes NOWHERE, and probably pisses off the person you thought you replied to when they think you just ignored them. So instead of complaining to me about your messages not being replied to from this site via email, please READ that email notice that plainly states what you need to do in order to reply to who you are trying to converse with.

Yeah, I know. They are a pain in the butt. But they pay the bills to keep my server running. Just a fact of life, I am afraid.

Want to get rid of them? Simple. Just become a Contributor level member or above and they will be gone. -> Please click HERE."

Is that too much for me to ask of you to keep this site running? Well, sorry about that. I too wish I could get everything for free. But alas.....

Google Adsense ad revenue for December, 2025 was just $30 over the cost of the lease for the server running this site. So, in effect, the money providing the incentive for me to continue running this site is coming SOLELY from the paid memberships and sponsorships here. Which honestly ain't much....

I'm looking to start a social group for locals (Virginians) and it would be a place to solicite a local ad. Basically, most people are gonna come on here to list an ad anyway, so I figured as a group, we can post a link to our sale ad or a brief description. This would save on shipping and who doesn't prefer a local sale? I can think of a thousand other bonuses, but of course, there is money tied into advertisements and member contributions so I wanted to run this by Rich or anyone else that might have input.

Social groups are sort of an awkward place - still part of the site, but somehow different. If they are public, then I don't think the site rules can be totally overlooked...but it is the admin of the group that is primarily responsible for what happens there. My main comment is that a social group for locals should not be an alternative to the classifieds; meaning that there would have to be an ad placed on the site, and linked in the group. If people are allowed to post more - ie descriptions, questions, negotiations, etc - it will become more likely that people will try to bypass the classifieds....and more likely that those attempts will slip through the cracks. If it takes off, you'll have your work cut out for you.

That is just my perspective, though....and shouldn't be considered as a statement by/for the site.

Thanks Harald. My intent wouldn't be to use the social group as an alternative, more so a place where I can check out the reptiles that are near me before I go national. For example, every morning I get on and check local classifieds first (i.e. herpexchange, CL) and then I come on Fauna.

It would be nice to have like a hub for all the local ads. A place where we can all check to see what's available in our neck of the woods. No negotiations, haggling, discussions, just a link (to the already existing ad) and maybe a description.

Or maybe a filter function in the current classifieds to search by state :D

Well, there are the tags (only contributing members can create new ones...but creating one for the States shouldn't be a big deal)....my understanding is that's pretty much what they're for - enabling and narrowing searches. If people put their state as a tag, then searching that state should bring up those ads. Of course, people will only tag the 6-10 closest states, to maximize their odds of getting picked up in a search, lol.
