    Google Adsense ad revenue for December, 2025 was just $30 over the cost of the lease for the server running this site. So, in effect, the money providing the incentive for me to continue running this site is coming SOLELY from the paid memberships and sponsorships here. Which honestly ain't much....

I thinking about getting a tegu and was wondering how big of and tank do they need.When i went to the pet store they sayed my 75 gallon would last me a while,so i might be getting a tegu in stead of a savannh monitor,and plus i heard that tegu are better any ways they have better temperments and thing like that so can some one please answer my question.

I have had several of both, right now i have 2 savannahs i juvie and 1 sub adult, also have 3 tegus now, 1 adult blue, 1 juvie black and white, and a adult black and gold.. I think it just matters how much you handle them, the more the better, like with all reptiles they learn to trust you a little more each time you handle them.. I like both about the same, Tegus are a little more active, but i still like the savannah's too.. Good luck either way, oh yeah the bigger the area they have the better, i keep mine outside, of course i live in AZ, so it doesn't get that cold here.. But a 75 gallon would house a juvenile for a good while.. Mike L.
 
I'd say an Argentine Black & White Tegu (the largest tegu) could live in a 75 gallon tank for between 8 months and a year.

Take your time picking a Tegu, they are not all the same in temperament or
habit. Choosing the"right one" may take time but the right one for you is well worth the invested time spent looking because, as I see it, he is yours for life
and like a child you must teach it good habits thru a good routine of feeding,
cleaning and maintenance and most importantly, try to help him with proper socialization and hopefuly good manners! The key here is to buy a young Tegu, younger is better in this species,choose one that you really really like! If you can spend all day with it before you buy and not saying to hold it all day, but be as observant as you can be! Second key is to buy many BOOKS! Read anything about Tegus that you can get you hands on, go on-line read other peoples Tegu experiences. Most but not all places you buy a Tegu from will not let you return it just because you do not like the one you originally picked out. Be patient once you get him home and very importatly HAVE FUN!!

which to get and where to keep it

do we start with the meanest ?or the biggest ?i have 3 of the 5 offered my argentines black and whites are sleeping as are my reds but break out the food in a month they eat a yrs worth in 6 months and nothing fills them up turkey,mice,mixed veggies,chicken,fruit but not to much of this (but the reds will eat all the fruit i offer them)eggs,i hunt so i give them deer meat also,collard greens,they eat anything lol which is good easy to find food for them.reds almost the same food just more veggies and more fruit i keep mine in cages built for large boas there 6 ft long and 2 ft deep and 18 inchs tall works good for my black and whites and reds i pen them out side come spring in 8 by 8 cages,pairing them and feeding them love to be handled and i use them in school displays but the sleep for 5 to 6 months,so it off sets the food bill lol.now the blues my favorite of the five not as big and all meat eaters no veggies here lol dont sleep during the winter so alot more fun but they eat all tegus can pack food away mine dont mine being handled but fuss more then reds and black and whites they dont get near as big so caging is a little easier 75 should be ok for them but love the heat and got to have UVB all tegus got to have it if kept indoors for extened time like during the winter the two i dont have seem to be a little meaner with the gold being the meanest of the 5 and the columbian being the most like the blue just not as frendly hope it helps you out sorry for long post and good luck

HI. i have my adult female argentine b w in a 60 gallon and shes perfectly happy. shes 4 feet. and its not a prob at her to move around cuz most of the time shes in her hide box and just comes out to heat up and eat. . so a 75 will be perfect. and i have 3 tegu's. and 3 savs . an asian that is. 4 feet i have him in a 100 gallon home made wood cage so i can rebuild it for when he gets bigger and a nice beardie. but sav's are great i have a 3 footer whos the coolest. but my tegu's are just awesome. i wouldnt trade them for anything. same as my water . so get a 75 and it will last him for ever. make sure its kinda wide though. nothing to thin. .

Just make sure you get a Argentine tegu. I've never met a bad one raised from a youngster yet!


p.s. Blacks are not the biggest. I have a red at about 25 lbs. that would kill and eat an adult black!
 
look it up. blacks are the biggest. i never said heaviest. did i. read. the longest tegu is the argentine bw. not the heaviest. and id like to see your red try to take down my 4 foot. 12 lb black. it would never happen cuz tegu's all get alone. so b4 you criticize me. plz read carefully. . biggest means legnth. i never said heaviest, now did i.
 
Wasn't critisizing. Just making a comment. Biggest doesn't mean length. You could be six foot tall and weight 180 lbs. Someone else could be six foot tall and weight 250 lbs. They are bigger in my book. Longest means lenght.

since you have a red. how do you like them. i have bw and want to get a blue bad but need to get rid of my 3 foot sav 1st. running out of room. i hear the reds are really friendly just like the bw's. but just really heavy.. can you give me your opinion on them compaired to the bw's plz.

Morning. I have a breeding pair of reds and B&W's. Their temperments are the same. I like the reds better because of size and color. The red males when older adults are HUGE and turn a vivid red losing most if not all of the black pattern associated with youngsters. Again, they are very impressive animals also. My red males head is like the size of a football cut in half.
If you want a really tame animal, don't get a blue. Blues are actually Columbian and usually don't tame as well. I've had them and I never fully trusted them like I do my others.
Anyhow. You can't go wrong with Argentine B&W's or reds. Be careful buying the B&W's. They can be a little difficult to tell from Columbians and some people will try to sell Columbians as Argentines.
 
Actually

the Blue Tegu has been the most tame of the tegus i have had.. And i have had all but the red Tegu!!! I have a 4ft male Blue, and he is the biggest baby ever, never once has he tried to bite. And he loves to be held.. I have had som nice Black and whites and some real Nasty ones too. Still want to get a red one though, but right now i am concentrating on my snake breeding, so maybe a little later down the road i'll get one.. I still like the Blue Tegus best so far!!! As far as a Blue being a Colombian, that is not true. That is a misunderstanding based on the origins of the original shipment of 'blue' tegus. You can find more info at this URL.

Blues will tame down fine just like Argentine Black & Whites and Argentine Reds. If you don't want a tegu that requires a lot of work, just avoid the T.teguixin species.. Colombian Black Tegu (sometimes called Black & White) and Colombian Gold-Phased Black Tegu (often called Gold Tegu).

So you know I am speaking from experiance.. I keep:

2.7.0 Argentine B&W Tegu
1.0.1 Argentine Red Tegu
1.1.0 Blue Tegu
0.1.0 RedxBlue Cross Tegu

ty for all the info on the tegu's. i thought the blue was an argentine. so all the argentine species are the tamest ive heard. and never had any probs with mine at all.
