In short, DON'T! Email notices are to ONLY alert you of a reply to your private message or your ad on this site. Replying to the email just wastes your time as it goes NOWHERE, and probably pisses off the person you thought you replied to when they think you just ignored them. So instead of complaining to me about your messages not being replied to from this site via email, please READ that email notice that plainly states what you need to do in order to reply to who you are trying to converse with.

Yeah, I know. They are a pain in the butt. But they pay the bills to keep my server running. Just a fact of life, I am afraid.

Want to get rid of them? Simple. Just become a Contributor level member or above and they will be gone. -> Please click HERE."

Is that too much for me to ask of you to keep this site running? Well, sorry about that. I too wish I could get everything for free. But alas.....

Google Adsense ad revenue for December, 2025 was just $30 over the cost of the lease for the server running this site. So, in effect, the money providing the incentive for me to continue running this site is coming SOLELY from the paid memberships and sponsorships here. Which honestly ain't much....

Thoughts on Pied "Markers"

I have a female I plan on breeding next season that I was told is "het pied." Seems like you hear that a lot and most people don't have any paperwork to prove it. Well I got her nice and cheap back in January and when I asked how the guy knew she was het pied, he said "look at all the pied markings."

I see a lot of people on here show pics of these "markers" on true het pieds but I have also seen these on a ton of other snakes. I have 3 other BP's with markings that look similar if not exactly the same that I know for a fact have no chance of them being het pied.

I sure hope mine proves out next season since she went back on feed and is now well on her way to getting up to size.

Just trying to get peoples different thoughts on these "markers" or if anyone knows if there is a difference in the markings between the different hets. Please chime in with any info you may have on the subject.

The markers are visual cues that help identify het pieds in a known group of possible hets. There are het pieds that don't have them, and non hets that do. (I've seen comments that seem to indicate some "lines" show them more accurately.)
One should not consider them viable markers on BPs with unknown genetic histories.

The main reason I was wondering is because a few of us were saying the other day that it seems everyone that has BP's for sale on other sites, craigslist, or at some pet stores even, say they are het pied due to the markings. I don't trust that at all and honestly I was told the female I bought is het pied but I got her at the price of a sub-adult normal so I figured it's worth the risk.

How do you know that there is no chance of them being het pied? Just wondering. Many breeders wholesale hets as normals. Hets can also come in from Africa unbeknown to anyone. Markers are just a tool that breeders use to (sometimes) succesfully pic out posible hets from a clutch.

Because I produced them from animals I have had for years. They are hets for other genes, just not pied.

What Harald said, markers are to be used in a known animal coming from known heterozygous animals.
Anything else is a pure speculation, although if you have a pied male laying around, why not try.

I think the fact that many hets that prove out do not have markers is the thing that convinces me. Plenty of other morphs have things like ringers or messed up patterns that show up on their normal or non het babies. I guess a decent example is normals that come from pretty pastels tend to be pretty also. They tend to be snakes that ought to be bred for their own merit rather than in hopes of a hidden gene, unless of course either of the parents was het for something.

I think if you feel it is worth your time, experiment and see what happens! I'm glad you didn't invest the price of a proven het into her though, because it's sad to see someone with good intentions getting scammed or misinformed!

I have het pied that I have produced with very strong markers and hets with none at all. What I have realized is that 90% of my hets I have produced have a bit of a color difference than my normals that have the same markers. My hets tend to be more dull than my normals. Has anyone else seen that in theirs? This is going visual x normal breeding.

I thought as a Pro, you would know it all?

Dave

Obviously you don't know the meaning of the word.

pro /prō/
Noun
1.A professional, esp. in sports: "a tennis pro".
2.An advantage of something or an argument in favor of a course of action: "the pros and cons of joint ownership".

Adjective
(of a person or an event) Professional.

Preposition
In favor of.

Synonyms
noun. professional
adjective. professional

Pro is short for professional, unlike all the people that keep criticizing the name of my company over and over.

I am also a Professional Skydiver, and a skydiving instructor. That doesn't mean I know everything there is to know about the sport.

Just trying to get peoples different thoughts on these "markers" or if anyone knows if there is a difference in the markings between the different hets. Please chime in with any info you may have on the subject.

I was asking for opinions, not sarcastic remarks.

I know the definition of pro, and what it is short for. Pro Exotic's name makes sense, because Chad was a Professional football player. Your name makes it look like you are trying way to hard to get everyone to think you have been in the biz longer than you have....in my opinion.

Where can I get my professional snake breeder certificate?!?! Come on guys, there is plenty more to worry about other than a mans business name which is solely his right to choose. Who cares what it is? It doesn't affect me it doesn't affect you there should be no problem.
