• Responding to email notices you receive.
    **************************************************
    In short, DON'T! Email notices are to ONLY alert you of a reply to your private message or your ad on this site. Replying to the email just wastes your time as it goes NOWHERE, and probably pisses off the person you thought you replied to when they think you just ignored them. So instead of complaining to me about your messages not being replied to from this site via email, please READ that email notice that plainly states what you need to do in order to reply to who you are trying to converse with.

    Yeah, I know. They are a pain in the butt. But they pay the bills to keep my server running. Just a fact of life, I am afraid.

    Want to get rid of them? Simple. Just become a Contributor level member or above and they will be gone. -> Please click HERE."

    Is that too much for me to ask of you to keep this site running? Well, sorry about that. I too wish I could get everything for free. But alas.....

    =====================

    Google Adsense ad revenue for December, 2025 was just $30 over the cost of the lease for the server running this site. So, in effect, the money providing the incentive for me to continue running this site is coming SOLELY from the paid memberships and sponsorships here. Which honestly ain't much....

What is "locking an ad" ???

There is a thread management option, right at the bottom, when you are submitting an ad that reads Close this thread after you submit your message. A lot of people have probably never even noticed it. It closes the thread to responses, as Kevin said. I think, though, that it is closed to all responses (except by a moderator)...if the OP wants to make a new post, the ad will have to be reopened to allow it. At least that's the way I remember it working :shrug01:

It prevents all the back and forth garbage that sometimes fills up ads.
When it is locked, only the person who posted the ad can re-open it to modify it. No one else can post on it. This way questions can be sent via PM to the seller instead of getting buried in pages of posts that sometimes really have nothing to do with the ad.

Yes, there was some substantial debate about this, which crops up again and again here and there, about whether classified ads should be single post threads with no replies, or fully open to any and all replies. Obviously there are pros and cons to both approaches, and each will be bigger in priority to some than to others. The compromise I chose was to allow all members to be able to choose for themselves how they wanted their ads to be displayed in this respect. Anyone posting a classified ad has the option of locking their ad to replies, or keeping it open. Each member has to make their own decision on how best they feel they want to post ads here.

That being said, with the recent restriction against bumping ads in the classifieds, I have indicated that if the recently implemented custom code does not do the trick after sufficient time has elapsed to get most members aware of the change, then the most reasonable thing for me to do at that time to preempt the bumping problem is to just STOP replies altogether in the classifieds sections. I am hoping this will not reach this point, but if I feel that I have no choice, then I will do what I feel is needed to be done to fix a problem that can't be fixed any other way.

I would much prefer that everyone just act reasonable and courteous towards everyone else using the classifieds here, and I don't like the fact that a few bad apples can spoil it for those who ARE acting reasonable and courteous, but I really can't see running my moderators ragged trying to keep up with abuses day in and day out till I lose them all from burn out. I am trying my best to make this site the best it can be for as many people as possible, including my moderators, so I am asking everyone to help me in this pursuit.
