Replying to the email just wastes your time as it goes NOWHERE, and probably pisses off the person you thought you replied to when they think you just ignored them.     Google Adsense ad revenue for December, 2025 was just $30 over the cost of the lease for the server running this site. So, in effect, the money providing the incentive for me to continue running this site is coming SOLELY from the paid memberships and sponsorships here. Which honestly ain't much....

I saw this ad tonite (italics and highlighting by me)-
I have an anery 100% het for snow. She is ready to breed next season and very healthy and doing great. She eats 3-4 rats per week no problem. She displays gentic markers and shoing the snow gene as well

I know what anerys look like...but genetic markers? showing the snow gene?
 
I don't personally work with snows, but I do follow boa genetics. I have never heard mention of any genetic markers in regards to snows. Did the originator of the post offer any insight?
 
No, there was no insight offered & I'm going to withhold further comment until I get around to trying to contact this person...though I likely won't be online again to do so til late Tuesday. I will update if/when I get a response.
 
OK, I got a response from the seller (I also got a good reference from somebody I am inclined to trust). With respect to the genetic markers and showing the snow gene, she said:

She did send many pics, showing some white scalation...however nothing more than I have seen on other anerys (Matt has one for sale now that shows the same thing, and it isn't het snow). Besides, snow is simply a combination of two recessive traits - anery & albino - and having some white scales and ground coloring does not mean that a snake is het albino (though I have heard a few people say that increased speckling in poss het albinos is indicative of the traits presence...subject for another conversation, perhaps, lol)
 
I have known Bill Gaines for a while now and have toured his facility and occasionally meet him for dinner (I even own one of his snows). He also has the largest snow collection around. Never, not even one time, has he inferred that there are genetic markers for snow boa's. If anyone would know it would be Bill!

I would say that either this individual is very uneducated or he is trying to pull off a scam. I would steer clear.

That decision was already made...too much stuff has been popping up the last couple of days to spend money on animals I don't need

I don't know about that, but she certainly is showing how strong her snow gene's are, lol
 
all kidding aside, I did not actually have a conversation with this person (just the initial question about the genetic marker and how she was showing the gene), so I can't say much about his/her knowledge level. The replies to my emails were courteous, they answered the questions I asked, pictures were provided (and in quantity), and they came reasonably quickly. I would be thrilled if more of the people I attempted to contact about a snake responded in that manner. And, again, she did get a big thumbs up from a respected member of Fauna that has seen this particular animal. If things in my world weren't spinning so lopsidedly right now, I would consider going for a look-see...oc course, there would have to be some sort of conversation about genetics, markers, proof, etc.
 
Sounds like a load of crap to Me. Like the "het for Hypo" that was advertised there for a while. People don't know what they are talking about, and will say anything to sell the snake. The really bad part, is someone will come along and think they are getting a great deal and purchase the thing not being any the wiser of it.

Perhaps I was taught wrong, but I don't beleive any recessive genes show themselves in the heterozygous condition. If they did they would be Dominant, or incomplete dominant (codominant) genes. But I am far from a pro at genetics, perhaps I am wrong about that.

i agree. i do not beleve that their is a perticular pattern or Genetic markers that says that that snake is a true het for anything...
