HerpAuction--Too bad it doesn't seem to work

Author Subject: HerpAuction--Too bad it doesn't seem to work

Since the subject of HerpAuction has come up in recent posts, maybe it's a good topic to cover on its own. I originally thought it was a terrific idea, but based on my two (a small sample, I admit) experiences with HerpAuction as a Buyer, not a Seller, I would never bother with it again, unless I knew the Seller already. A 100% negative rating is too high for me. My first experience was with trying to purchase a yellow monitor which NERD had posted and my bid (of $1500) hadn't met the reserve. When the auction ended, several e-mails to NERD asking what the reserve amount was so that I could possibly meet it and buy the animal weren't answered, and my complaint to the Webmaster was responded to with, "Sorry, we're new and not working quite right yet". The second was at the beginning of this year when I won an auction for a Surinam Emerald Tree Boa. I didn't receive it until a month after I had sent my money order, and my e-mail to the HerpAuction Webmaster for additional information on the Seller when I was unable to reach him on one of the many supposed shipping dates, went totally unanswered. Not one word from HerpAuction--not even a, "Sorry, we can't give you his phone number". When you read through the items up for auction, it just seems like there are a lot of comments regarding the buyer not following through, so it's being listed again. Like I said, I think it's a good idea, but there needs to be some sort of controls involved. Maybe it's not possible, but as I said, I wouldn't bid or list anything for sale.

I also have sent Herp Auction several e-mails in the past asking different questions. Only one was answered 4 days after I had sent it. Never any answer on the others. That does make me feel a little uncomfortable if a situation came up where I had been taken!

I have used herpauction several times and it is about a 50-50 deal. Some sell while others have to be reposted to sell. I recently started sending E-mails to people that don't follow through to let them know how childish they are and that they have missed out on owning a beautiful boa. I only have redtails or common Colombians. I have a couple morphs, Albino, Hypo and some true redtails. I love them all and care for them as if they were my children which I have 4 of, 2 boys, 2 girls. I am a serious animal lover. I hate to see any animals abused or mistreated. I think abusers should be locked up, zero tolerance. As for herpauction I think you need to take the good with the bad. He can't give phone numbers out with out permission, but I think it should become a requirement for posting or buying so people have recourse when they are being ripped off. They should have to put down all their info, address and phone number and it should be confirmed. It will help keep out the riff raff and children. Kingsnake is a great place, but I think $52 a year is a bit steep. If I was a breeder/dealer I could see paying the price, but I do this as a hobby and to get the beautiful morphs for myself without spending $10,000 for a boa. My passion is Harleys. I am planning on building them as a business when I get back on my feet. I've had 4 surgeries on my back and have been laid up for 3-4 years. I'm taking physical therapy and hopefully I will be back in the work force or have my own business in a few months. I am very mechanically inclined. I have designed a couple improvements for envelope folding machines, my ex-career. I have also built Harleys in the past and learned metal working/repair from my dad. I have a 17 year old son following my same passion and my 16 year old son can draw or airbrush a copy of anything he sees. That is his passion. They both love the boas too and help out daily. I may become a breeder in the future, but it's not definate yet. I'll wait and see what happens with what I have now. Thanks. Ernie
