Just to let you know that I paid considerably over market price for a nice animal...Well, shipping was not included, and when I go the animal, she was FULL OF MITES. FULL OF THEM !!!

Terrible experience. Just not worth your money or your time.

Art,

Sorry about your bad experience. I saw an ad for some very pretty Amarili posted by Prehistoric last year. Fortunately, I live close enough, so I went to take a look at their facility before I purchased anything. The condition and stench of the animals was deplorable. ALL the Amarili (and I'm sure everything else they sell) were COVERED with mites. It's a real shame such nice animals are cared for so poorly. These people should be shut down!
BTW - I also noticed cans and cans of Provent 'o Mite on the shelves in their "high end" room, but they still were infested with mites.........hmmmmmm.........I guess the old methods to rid a collection of mites are still the best!

Well, I have never dealt with them before, but I do think they should know what they have before they put it up for sale. I saw on the classifieds last week (kingsnake) that they had a hypo boa. First off (in my opinion) it was a regular one and the most disturbing part about it was this. The ad stated that it was a hypo 100% het for anery. It went on to say that that animal would be a great way to start the SUNGLOW project.
I will let you all think on that one for a while!

I just thought I would ad that the post was removed from kingsnake.com.
It was originally posted on the 26th along with the other ads (that are still there) selling argentine boas and Mad. boas (trees I think).

I used to live by their store in Fountain Valley... the
store has gone thru bad times and good times... I won't comment
on that. BUT I did ask about an albino iggy they had
advertised and they said they did not have it in store, that
a lot of their animals for sale (posted on web) are at
a broker's, so basically they are being a middle man. I
got this from the mouth of the manager at the FV store in 1999.
(fyi)... I've heard many times their animals have been infested
with mites.. buyer beware.

I've known the OWNER of Provent-a-Mite (Robert Pound, Mahopac, NY) for over 30 YEARS! PROVENT-A-MITE is the BEST mite killer I've ever come across! WAY better than the Yellow strips! IF Prehistoric Pets USED SOME....we MIGHT not be having this conversation!!
There is NOTHING worse than walking into a Pet Shop (of ANY kind) and smelling ammonia! That should raise a RED FLAG for ANYBODY!! NOW, DON'T GET ME WRONG...ALL REPTILES have a distinct odor all to themselves, MOST of the public can recognize the difference (even though SOME will still think it's because of unclean practices, and there's really nothing you can say or do to convince them!) I own my own store in Tampa, FL., I sell ALL the live food (mice, rats, rabbits, worms, pinkies, fuzzies, crickets, etc.), which, if the cages and enclosures aren't kept SPOTLESS! The place would REEK!! If you own a store, YOU HAVE GOT to keep it clean! Cleaner than your own HOUSE!! You're dealing with the public! They are the most demanding people when it comes to buying healthy animals! AND THEY SHOULD BE!! Why would they want to RE-visit your place if they couldn't stand to be in there in the FIRST place!??? I will just NEVER understand some people!
Do you have any idea how little time it takes for a dead mouse or rat (or regurged one) to start to stink?? A couple of hours at most! ALL store owners (or employees) should be CONSTANTLY cleaning water bowls, bedding, feces, checking for "bugs", etc. Heck...Tampa has got to be the MITE CAPITOL OF THE WORLD!! There are over 30 different types of cold-blooded Mites in FL, which means you have to be ESPECIALLY CAREFUL to check EVERY ANIMAL THAT COMES IN!! And, I'm sure, CA is the same way! Come on guys...WAKE UP!! If you WANT REPEAT CUSTOMERS and GOOD word of mouth...you have got to make people WANT to come back! AND THAT MEANS CLEAN, CLEAN, CLEAN!!

I sell puppies, kittens, birds, small animals, reptiles and fish. There is ALWAYS going to be some kind of aroma, no matter how many times you clean the cages. At any point in time there is some animal urinating or deficating.

As far as mites, I treat my whole store with Provent-A-Mite. I haven't seen any crawling bug, not even red ants which are all over my neighborhood. However, I don't sell it because I know most of the American public doesn't like to read (how many of you have ever read your insurance policy??) and might misuse it.

Just my opinion...

UNBELIEVEABLE!!!!
Hey Neil Gubitz, why don't you take some of your own advice. Stop coming on here and lying about yourself. Get in there and clean clean clean those cages. I won't even come into your shop for fear of returning home with some disease stuck to my clothes to be transmitted to my collection.
While you're at it, why don't you take those chondros you have for sale off the market until you get the stuck sheds off that they've had for over a month now. Just a little piece of advice: green tree pythons need misting during shed cycles and food to keep them healthy.
Everyone else, I live about 5 minutes from Neil's shop in Tampa. I have no idea how this man could ever get a good name but this seems to be exactly the case. Neil Gubitz of The Snake Pit in Tampa FL is a bad guy, steer clear.
I will not be responding to this thread as I know Neil is going to come back with that famous NY attitude (which he seems to use as an excuse alot) and I don't wanna hear it. I'm glad several people have had good deals with Neil, but you have been lucky. Go to Neil's shop one day and see if he's living by the standards he stated above, but be quick becasuse he'll be cleaning up pretty quick after this.
Here's one for thought: Why does Neil know so much about treating for mites? He knows how all the brands work!!! hehehe
Beware,
Diane
P.S. If you go to the python classifieds on kingsnake, you can see the quality chondros Neil has for sale. You can tell from the pictures that they're in sad shape, especially the red one. Go there quick, becasuse Neil will be deleteing them and if not it's almost the end of the month and kingsnake will be clearing the classifieds.

niel you need to REALLY clean up your act as an ex animal control officer i find you a disgrace to us animal keepers.
you give us a bad rep. and lieing on top of it onley makes it worse.
why run such an investment into the ground? you have to hire more people and follow advice clean clean and clean some more.

my son has much more sympathy to animals but then again he cares for them not just in this busness to make a buck.
if i could id shut you down and get a Proper owner in there but afraid to say it most pet shops in fl are allmost as bad as yours.

well niel i doubt this will do any good your convinced your not this store we all have grown to hate.
well i found a person runs a small reptile place and its what all animal places should be

First off I would like to apologise to Art as we've basically swithed his original post for Prehisoric Pets to Neil Gubitz of The Snake Pit.

Now as far as my original post regearding Neil, I would like to state that I am not changing my opinion of Neil, but I would like to say that Neil has made some changes for the better at his shop here in tampa. He's still a long way from a good guy, but hopefully he's honestly trying to be. With that said, here's a conversation I had with Neil last night and once again, thak you Neil for not coming back with your NY attitude.

Diane....who are you, and what did I EVER do to you, for you to be so
cruel??? If you are talking about 2-3 years ago, Yeah, maybe you are
correct, but as of about 2 years ago, I've had a different manager come
in and make the place spotless!! I really wish you would give me
another
chance to PROVE to you that it is NOT the same store!!! I would BEND
OVER BACKWARDS to make a customer happy!! INCLUDING YOU!!! Neil
Look, everyone has their own opinions, and you have yours....but I
think
that everybody deserves a second chance, also, if they ASK for it??? Is
there any way I can make things right for you??? I really AM a nice
guy!!!

Neil,
The way you have changed your business ethics are the
exact reason I waited so long to post about you. I
will go back to the forum after our conversation and
mention that you have improved drasticly, though I
will not take back my bad guy post, it's gonna take
more than what you've done so far.
My main reason for concern of your present ethics are
the sad green tree pythons you are trying to pawn off
on some poor unsuspecting sole right now. I've been
watching those 2 animals for quite some time with
great concern. Green tree pythons are absolutely
awesome and I'd hate to see a beginner (with green
trees) purchase one of those animals and be booted
right back out of the chondro hobby, cause they
purchsed a poor animal.
Anyways, I do see a drastic improvement, but you're
still far from the person you've made yourself out to
be on the board of inquiry. Believe me, if you
continue with the improvements, I will have no problem
whatsoever changing my opinion on the public forum.
Though i've been cruel (as you said) I too believe
everyone deserves a second chance and i'm proud you're
beginning to respect the animals you're keeping and
selling.
Just a little advice: keep doing whatever it is you're
doing to make you're customers proud, but DO NOT sell
those green trees or any other animals you may have
that are in the same condition until they've been
brought back to health. Please keep in mind that you
may very well sell someone they're first expensive
specialty animal, and ruin any desire they had to get
heavy duty into our hobby.
I do appreciate and commend you for not coming back
with your NY attitude with me. I had no intention of
responding to you with this attitude, but since you
didn't, here I am.
Take care,

Diane, I appreciate you at least talking to me...thank you....as for
the
chondros...I'll be BRUTELY honest with you, they were sold to me as
babies, I had the yellow one for about 3 months and the Red one about 2
months (I think?), I TRULY wish you would have come forward sooner to
tell me HOW to PROPERLY care for those kids. I THOUGHT I was going
everything right! I gave them damp moss on the bottom to keep the
humidity in the tank, I gave them a large clean water bowl, a branch
that was their thickness, and (I SWEAR TO YOU) they ate EVERY SINGLE
TIME I OFFERED THEM FOOD!! And NEVER regurged! It's OBVIOUS to me that
you KNOW what you're talking about because THEY ARE BOTH NOW DEAD!! I
can't tell you how bad I feel! The red one is in the FRIDGE because I
am
taking him to Safari Animal Clinic (our Vet) tomorrow for an ecropsy! I
WANT TO KNOW WHAT I DID WRONG!!! How can I get more knowledge if
SOMEONE
won't SHARE that knowledge??? Don't you see, IF you knew they were
sick,
(and I'm telling you, I DIDN'T!) and had you mentined ANYTHING about
that....I DO LISTEN TO KNOWLEDGE...they MIGHT still be alive??? I mean
really? Do you SERIOUSLY think I would want to sell sick animals??? I
want to be THE BEST!!! IN EVERY WAY and that INCLUDES customer CARE and
SATISFACTION??? I'm NOT in this game JUST for the money?? Just look at
some of the prices, I think I'm the lowst around? I love it and I love
animals...I try VERY HARD to keep that place as clean as I can, but you
know how hard that can be when you only have one employee and 100s of
customers a day taking away the time for the cleaning? I don't leave
that store till sometimes 10:00 because I want to clean something or
other when nobody's there...
PLEASE? I really DON'T CARE if you write something nice on Herps...I
want YOU to be happy!!! ESPECIALLY IF YOU CAN GIVE ME ANY HELP with the
care of SOME of the animals I'm not THAT familiar with (YET)!
By the way, just for the record...I TRY to make myself aware of ALL the
products that can help cure an animal of one thing or another....Do you
know how many questions like that I get asked every day?? It would be
foolish of me NOT to know how all the Provent a things work?? You know
that???
So, as you can (hopefuly) see, I REALLY want to make The Snake Pit into
something that TAMPA and the COUNTRY can be PROUD OF!!! and...WITH YOUR
HELP...I'll have a damn good shot at it, wouldn't you think? All I'm
saying, I guess, is that we should ALL stay together and try to help
each other for the betterment of ALL REPTILES! That's ALL I ever wanted
to do!
Please forgive me, if I EVER offended you by either something I did, or
didn't, do! Who says you CAN'T teach an old dog new tricks!!! BULL!!!
Neil

Neil,
You are absolutely correct, I should have come forth
sooner about the chondros, but it's now my turn to be
brutaly honest, I honestly thought you simply didn't
give a damn because i've been watching since the
begining and in the begining (as you stated
yourself)that seemed to be the case. another reason is
when I go into a pet store (any store, not yours) and
start making coments, i'm usually treated like any
other ass right off the street. I've tried to help out
shops before, but they don't know me from Adam and
i've even been told that I have no idea what i'm
talking about. After several of these interactions
i've basically given up since i'm trying to help and
being treated like an idiot. I've been in this hobby
for quite some time and i've bred over 40 different
species of snakes, lizards, turtles and tortoises, you
can imagine how I feel to be told I have no idea what
i'm talkin about.
Anyways, you do seem pretty heartfelt about your
animals now and I will bring it to your attention
if/when I see a problem. You can also feel free to ask
me any questions you may have ever. If i know the
answer you'll get it and I will not pretend I know
something I don't, if i don't know the answer i'll
tell you straight out that i do not have the answer.
I sure do hope you really feel the way you say you do.
The Snake Pit has been around for a while now and even
though there has been several owners, maybe you can be
the one that puts it on the map.
Good luck,
Diane

Diane...I'm as serious as a HEART ATTACK!!!
Now...the FIRST thing I would like you to do, is COME IN AND INTRODUCE
YOURSELF????? I'll be in the store till about 3:00 tomorrow (I've got
to
take a dead snake to the Vet!)
When you DO come in, I'll tell you the story about my LAST manager!! If
you don't know already???
I'm not sure if you've been in the store LATELY?? But, with the
High-End
Herps I have been buying, I'd be a FOOL not to keep them as healthy as
I
can! That's A LOT of money we're talking about! I've since moved my
Emmys to their own separate tanks, I've got 1.3 adults! ANY HELP you
care to give me on breeding those, AND my adult Albino Columbians, AND
my dh Snows, Salmon Hypo Anerys, Type 2 CA Anery, high end Beardies,
etc., would be GREATLY appreciated!! If you live around the area, you
might even know my manager...her name is Angela Coker (now), she's
married to Randy Coker....any bells??
Well, in any case...now that you see that I'm DEAD SERIOUS about my
store.....would you PLEASE say something NICE about me??? I PROMISE I
won't let you down!! Or anybody else, for that matter!...Neil

Well, all I can say is that I hope Neil is being honest, time will tell and if he does in fact change his ways I will return to let the public know.
Good luck Neil and keep up the improvements,
Diane

Ya know, that's pretty funny...I guess NOW I KNOW where all the "anonymous" tips to the Fish and Game have been coming from! It's also funny that I have NEVER been given a sitation or told to clean ANYTHING!! EVERY TIME the Animal Control Officer walks in the door...his EXACT WORDS ARE....."Here I am on another anonymous report....Neil, your store is very nice and there's NOTHING that you need to do!!"!! if THEY don't find anything wrong, who the hell are you (Mark and Jeff) to say otherwise??? Yeah, I DID have those Yellow Mite killers in the tanks to PREVENT MITES from getting to my animals..NOT to kill the ones that AREN'T EVEN THERE!!!
Personally, I really don't care what you think!! It's obvious to me (and everyone else) that you don't have the GUTS to say these things to my face!! You'd rather just act like a two-year-old and go "tell my mommy"!! What a bunch of jealous little babies!! I DEFY ANYONE TO COME TO MY STORE TO SEE FOR THEMSELVES HOW CLEAN IT IS!! YOU CAN EAT OFF THE FLOOR!! And the TANKS ARE METICULOUSLY CLEAN!! You won't find a piece of feces in ANY OF THEM!! I CLEAN them AS SOON as they MAKE THEM!!
Gee, ya think maybe that's why my business has MORE THAN DOUBLED in the last year??? It's people like you (Mark and Jeff), that think they are WAY ABOVE everybody else! AND, It's people like Diane who ARE WAY ABOVE everybody else, the DIFFERENCE is that she's SMART ENOUGH to SEE the changes for herself!! Oh, I'm SURE you (Jeff and Mark) NEVER had a sick animal, or one that died, or one that had Mites!! Yeah, right!! People like you MAKE ME SICK!! So, just go crawl back under your rock and write ANOTHER nasty thread...I DON'T CARE!! I KNOW my store's clean, the Fish and Game KNOW it's clean, and EVERY CUSTOMER I HAVE compliments me on the beauty and cleanliness of the store!! YOU JUST CAN'T PLEASE EVERYBODY!! There will ALWAYS be somebody to gripe about ANYTHING so they can FEEL like big men...when, in fact, they are worse that little children!! But, don't worry Rich and Mark, I'm sure there is SOMEBODY out there, who actually BELIEVES YOU! Don't you feel better now???
I WILL NOT rely to ANY MORE threads pertaining to this...it's just not worth it! If you don't like my store...STAY OUT OF IT!! I'll do JUST FINE WITHOUT YOU!!

I'm the manager at the Snake pit.I've been going their sense the 1st owner & I've seen things that I would do different with every owner (alot of which was stated above).I've always had alot of sympathy & love for animals. I take my job VERY serriusly I do as much as I can for the animals & the custumers. When I frist came to work with Neil over a year ago it was a mess! But you can't really blame Neil for any thing except for keeping his last manager as long as he did. It was her job to take care of the animals & custumers & she obviusly did not! It's taken awhile but Neil, myself & good friend Amber are puting extra hours to wright all of snake pit's problems. Anyone who comes to the store will see we're tring our best for the customers. We go out of our way to help, if an animal was sold & not doing so good you can bring them back we'll help feed, sex, remove shed or eye caps & offer adivse or a good vet with a small discount on your frist visit. I don't make comm. on sales I have no reason to lie to anyone.I love my job but most of all I love the animals! I hope you all come to take a look at the improvements we've made & the ones we're making now!

I agree with some of the previous posts regarding the condition of the Snake Pit in the past. I went to the Snake Pit for the first and only time about 4 years ago. The place was absolutly filthy! The colubrids did not appear to be in to bad of condition, but the boids were a mess. I asked if I could see some boas, one of the guys showed me a cage that had seven to ten adults in it. The cage was covered with feces and shed skins. Because of the condition of the place, I never went back. I did not bother to post on this thread earlier because I did not know if Neil was the owner back then and it would not be fair to post my observations from four years ago. I really commend Neil if he has been working hard on cleaning the place up. Maybe I'll go back to the Snake Pit and check it out. This just shows how important it is to keep your store and animals clean. In the 4 years that have past since my first visit to the Snake Pit I have spent over $4000.00 on animals.

I would LOVE to invite you to COME IN AGAIN, if for no other reason than to see the DIFFERENCE!!! You WILL NOT believe your eyes OR nose!! Angela and I have worked NON-STOP to make the place the BEST HERPTILE SHOP in TAMPA!! We have NO MORE MITES, we have perfectly CLEAN tanks AND animals, and the customer care we give is SECOND TO NONE!! If ANYTHING is not the way the customer wants it, I WILL MAKE IT RIGHT!! PERIOD!! Quick question here...You've owned it for 3 1/2 years -Correct?
So why has it taken 3 1/2 years to clean it up?
Blaming your previous staff is lame. Buck stops with you!
Glad to hear you are NOW doing something about it after 3+ years. It just seems funny to look back at your criticism of others considering your situation. If you have a website put up pics of the store.

Best of luck to you and your staff.

An alternate way of stressing words is to use -'s around them. That way you make -certain- people know you are stressing the word without making it look like yelling. /'s work as well.

I would like to commend Neil on his store!! I am a breeder, wholesaler, retailer, importer, & Most of all A LOVER!!!! of all reptiles. I sell my Chameleons to Neil and went to his store to check it out myself and see how it was and wether he was taking proper care of MY animals. His store was perfect. Probably one of the best displayed stores I have been to. I tell anyone if they want to believe someone else that is posting fraudulent and Slanderous comments about a person and their livelyhood, then maybe you should go and look for yourself. There is no room in the world for nothing but followers YOU NEED TO BE A LEADER!!! GO SEE FOR YOURSELF!!! I will not sell my animals to someone that I think is going to mistreat them in any way. I can and do encourage Neil to pursue legal avenues against this person that is Bashing him and his store. This Board is a great board to report bad experiences but should not be to try and Destroy someone without cause or truth. Keep up the great work Neil and you know what to do about this person.

Well, back to original subject of this thread... lol... I, too, live very close to Prehistoric Pets in Fountain Valley. I kick myself for not starting this thread myself a long time ago but figured I did not want to start any negative stuff. Prehistoric Pets never ceases to amaze me with it's large and diverse selection of terribly kept animals. I have gone on every given day of the week, mornings, noon time and eves - always hoping that I caught them at a bad moment. Every visit was an assault to my sense of smell and an injury to my love for herps. We all know that reptiles have an odor all their own but the smell of feces is not the one I am thinking of. The store has always been filthy. The cages are a mess. I have seen ch ball pythons on the brink of death being sold by the dozens (if they are such experts, they can get those poor babies into shape before you sell them for such outrageous prices $100!) I have seen feces in the giant snakes enclosures that laid in the same place for days (obviously not verifiable but we all know the giants don't defecate every day). I have seen cages in such bad repair that a burrowing python in the lower cage had managed to climb through a whole in the ceiling to inhabit the cage above it (cage was rotted through-not a new problem with the cages). I have seen monitors with such bad nose rub it hurt to look at them. I took my son and his friend, a newcomer to herping, to Prehistoric Pets on a whim recently (about 1 1/2 weeks ago) so that he could see some species not usually viewable at most places. These two boys (both 17) had tears in their eyes and asked me to get them out of there because the animals were in such dirty conditions. These boys are not wimps! They just have a new found love for herps and have learned the proper way to care for them. Bottom line, they need to clean up their act. They have "kiddy parties" there all the time. What a way for kids to see herps-not! I see their adds on KS all the time and wonder who the hapless purchaser will be.

Cheers!

Respectfully, Mary Newlander
