shipping prices/new options?

Hi,
I'm planning on shipping out a leo next week and had a few questions about prices etc. I went to the UPS website about a month ago and put in all the info about the package and it came up as $30 for shipping. I went back today and it said it would now be $50 for shipping. Then I went to FedEx and they say they don't ship animals at all. I've heard people say they use Fed Ex so how do you manage that? Is there any other option? I don't want the price to go over $30 but I guess if it comes down to "having to" it will work. Last time I shipped with USPS we had some problems with it getting there on time..but I've heard that they've switched to using Fed Ex for express mail so now they get places faster. Thanks ahead of time!

You can get certified by FedEx to be able to ship herps through their priority overnight service.

I followed the steps in the following link:

http://www.faunaclassifieds.com/foru...ad.php?t=33533

and have been shipping with them for almost six months now without any problem.

Because it's priority overnight, keeping the cost under $30 may be tricky depending on the box size and where you are shipping to.

Hope this helps.

Yes, I've read that entire thread. The problem is that I don't want to have to wait a month or more to ship as I'm expected to ship the leo out next week. I can start getting "qualified" but until then what do you suggest? I might have to go with UPS and lose some money.

when you find someone besides usps that will ship overnight for 30 bucks please let me know, I have been paying about 40-50 lately. make sure you goto the UPS store and not some 3rd party store. they charge extra

Katie,
Check again on the UPS website. I just did a price check there for Next Day Air from Florida to California and it came up as $34 and change. Be careful when you are entering the information that you specify the shipping day. The same shipment I just checked was $67 before I changed the ship date from Saturday to Monday.

Good Luck

Another possible cause for the increase in shipping charges might be because UPS recently changed its method of determining dimensional weight. The old standby 15x11x7 sized box went from being an actual weight box to an automatic 6 lb box. The new formula UPS uses is length x width x height divided by 192. The result is the dimensional weight of the shipment. A close friend of mine had estimated a shipping charge of $30 to a customer before Xmas, and once he closed the deal and shipped after the new year the actual charge was nearly $50.

Be careful UPS shippers, you might be in for some surprising bills in the near future.

Yea, I think the whole box/6lbs thing is the probelm. I just redid the whole "calculate and shipping cost" thing on the UPS website and instead of putting "My package" and putting in the dimensions I put "UPS EXPRESS BOX" and the cost came up to $35. I'm going to go talk to them on monday and see what I can learn before I have to ship. Thanks guys!

dimensional weight

UPS has just increased their "dimensional weight" requirements, which has changed my standard box size from 3 lbs. to 8 lbs!!! This is an average increase of nearly $20 per shipment! The actual way they calculate dimensional weight is WxLxH / 194. Here's their link that explains it: http://www.ups.com/content/us/en/res...im_weight.html

I was in a panic until I spoke to my UPS District Supervisor and they did offer a solution. They will sell "pre-paid" shipping labels in lots of 25 for as low as $25.00 per shipment, but only if the dimensional weight of the box is 5 lbs. or lower. This means we will need to use boxes under 970 cubic inches. I am still trying to locate box suppliers that can provide sizes of 12x10x8, 12x12x6, or similar. Superior Enterprises has a box that is 12x9x6 that has a dimensional weight of 4 lbs.

Another option we discussed was forming some kind of organization where UPS can offer incentives and shipping discounts of around 10%, although I don't think 10% is a very significant savings. Anyone else have any ideas? BTW, I also checked with FedEx, and their dimensional weight requirements are just about the same as UPS, so there would be no real difference in carriers.

hmmm....

I ended up shipping the leo with usps. It arrived on time and didn't seem stressed that much. I contacted UPS customer about shipping reptiles and here's what they said:

Effective January 1, 2005, UPS will accept
live animals for U.S. domestic transportation between the 48 contiguous
states on a limited basis. This service is not offered to/from Hawaii,
Alaska, Puerto Rico or internationally.

Packages containing live animals must be prepared in accordance with
specific packaging requirements. Packages containing live animals must
provide for the basic humane care and safety of the animal during
transportation. Any package containing a live animal shall be
considered
a perishable commodity and will be accepted for transportation solely
at
the shipper’s risk for any damage or loss arising from the perishable
nature of the item. UPS shall not be liable for any special,
incidental,
or consequential damages.

In the event a package containing a prohibited item is found in
transit,
that package will be stopped at the UPS facility where discovered. UPS
reserves the right to appropriately dispose of the contents of the
package.

Endangered or Threatened Species:

In addition to the enclosed list, any live animal that is an Endangered
Species is prohibited by UPS and will not be accepted for
transportation.
Shippers must refer to the list posted on the U.S. Fish and Wildlife
Service Web site at:

http://endangered.fws.gov/wildlife.html#Species

Also, the Endangered and Threatened Wildlife and Plants 50 CFR 17.11
and
17.12, December 1999 at:

http://endangered.fws.gov/50cfr_animals.pdf

Service Type:

Live animals will only be accepted for transportation when shipped via
UPS
Next Day Air service, and such shipments will only be accepted Monday
through Thursday.

Packaging:

Design and Construction of the Primary Container: All live animals
offered
for transportation must be in a new box. Corrugated boxes must be
constructed of a minimum of 275 # bursting strength corrugated or 44
edge
crush test. It is recommended that any package containing animals
requiring moisture during transportation be constructed of
water-resistant
material such as wax coated, wax impregnated, or plastic corrugated.
Minimal ventilation holes should be provided as necessary.

Internal Packaging and Other Considerations: Internal packaging
materials
must be used based on the characteristics of the animal, taking into
consideration the necessary humane care for the animal while in
transportation. Lizards and geckos should be individually contained in
bags constructed of breathable material, such as burlap. Insects should
be contained in individual primary containers such as plastic jars with
ventilation. Fish must be double bagged in strong plastic bags with a
minimum thickness of 4 mils. Each primary bag should be approximately
one
third full of water with the remainder filled with oxygen.

Additional Considerations: Additional components such as food,
moisture,
and temperature controls should be added as necessary to provide a safe
environment during transportation. Additional cushioning should be
added
to prevent movement of the primary containers or receptacles within the
outer box.

All the UPS employees at the UPS stores and even the office in Atlanta knew nothing about this so as soon as they heard the word "live" they freaked out. None of them were willing to help at all and none of my questions were answered. I'm going to try and get approved to ship with FED EX. Thanks for the help. It really explained somethings that UPS wouldn't.

Katie, the problem that I saw with getting FEDEX certified, and hopefully if this changed someone will correct me, is that a clause in the contract states that you can only ship the Herps to a business address.

I know probably 90% of my shipments are to residential addresses so this was a red flag for me.....
