Profile: Pyrope…?

For this entry, we are profiling Pyrope, one of four young adults we are considering promoting to breeder status for next year.

Pyrope was born in September 2009. We named her, as with all Living Gems females, after a semiprecious gemstone. She is brother to Prometheus, who we profiled last week; both snakes were the top pick of their respective genders from one of the top litters of that year.

Here is Pyrope as of January 2010, not long after she arrived at Living Gems:

In September 2012, after three long years of raising her up toward breeder status, we found something unusual in Pyrope’s viv:

In other words, Pyrope was a dude.

Now rechristened as Hades, master of the underworld, this snake is going to force some decisions on us as we scramble to adjust capacity to deal with the surprise loss of a top female.

Here is Hades as of September 2012, on the occasion of his third birthday.

Hades currently weights 1579 grams. As with his brother Prometheus, if he can reach 1650 or more, he will be promoted to alternate breeder status.

Thank you for reading,

Just very damp moss...this was in the center of her (his!) moist moss hide.

"Now rechristened as Hades" I love the names you give your snakes.

Thank you, Chris! I try and put some thought into it.
