Man, I don't care to hunt, but I do like to target shoot. I like shooting a bullet that I can see the holes at 100 yards without using a spotting scope. Plus there is just no way at all you can lose .50 BMG brass when it falls to the ground.

Dang if I didn't jam my thumb on my shooting hand somehow! Probably running my milling machine. Hope it feels better on Sunday so I can launch some lead. Hopefully we'll get some rain so I can shoot tracers without burning my woods down.

Running down to see my FFL guy on Saturday so I can pick up my latest Colt Python. If any of you know Colt Pythons, how many have seen a Ten Pointer model? Only 250 of them ever made. Bought a present for myself.........

(Yeah I know, it's blasphemy that I am selling Corn Snakes and buying Pythons with that money........)

No, Ritchie, I'm certainly not going to tell you that I just bought one of these for myself. That would be a lie.

I bought one back in 1997.

Now, for my 50th birthday, I got this little gem:

I actually like shooting it more than the 82A1.

Darn! I'm going to hate deleting this thread after my birthday is over with!

Ritchie - get the Barrett model 99. It is much more accurate than the 82A1. The 82A1 has a recoiling barrel, and can only do around 2 moa, at best. I'm a member of the Fifty Caliber Shooting Association, and the model 99 has actually won several competitions. I believe some records have been set with it as well.

Accuracy aside, there is just some ammunition that I wouldn't feel comfortable firing in the 82A1 because it is a semi-auto. I load my own ammo, and if you have never fired spotter tracer projectiles, you are in for a treat. But I would NOT want to fire them in the semi-auto because I would be afraid of the action of having the bolt stripping them from the magazine and then shoving them into the chamber could be dangerous. If you get a misfeed and that projectile hits the lip of the chamber *hard*, it could detonate the round. That could be ugly.

As another beside, the .50 BMG is a real handfull. Most people just don't want or need a semi where they can fire 10 rounds in rapid succession. At least I know I don't. Firing one at a time is fine with me.

Now the model 99 is a single shot rifle, so you have to load each round manually. Barrett also makes a model 95, which is a bolt action magazine fed rifle. But it's almost twice the cost of the model 99. You can find the model 99 for around $3K, and I believe you will NEVER regret spending that money. Plus there are bills before congress where the antigunners are foaming at the mouth to try to outlaw these rifles. At best they may get them listed as destructive devices, but at least you would be grandfathered in by already having one in your possession.

One STRONG recommendation I would like to make here. If you have even the slightest suspicion that you may buy one of these rifles, start buying up ammo whenever you can find it. Supply comes in spurts, and sometimes it just is not to be found. At any time, the supply could come to an end without warning.

OK, another recommendation: Do not skimp on the scope for a .50 BMG. The cheaper Tascos and such will work for about 20 to 40 rounds, and then they will die. So on top of the next scope you will have to buy when you learn your lesson, you will have the throwaway cost of the first scope, plus however the cost of how ever many rounds you had to fire to sight in two scopes. Don't buy a $3K rifle and then put a $100 scope on it. I have a Swarovski in the model 99 and a Shepherd on the model 82A1. Any Leupold will do the trick as well.

Anyway, Ritchie, if you get serious about getting one, feel free to email or call me and I will help you with any questions you may have. Most of the stuff you are going to have to think about, I have already done myself. Not saying I will have the best solution, but at least maybe I will have thought of something that you didn't.

Darn, maybe I should set up a BS section on this site as was suggested to me. This is a rather nice diversion for me talking about my other interests. Have to give it some thought........
