Cage size for neonates

Hello all. I had a question I wasn't sure of. The texans I currently have are both '06's. In the past, the animals that I purchased(BT and UNI)were both older, yearling and a 3 year old. I currently have them in their own sterilites(approx 1.5' long x 10" wide x 8" tall) I would like to put them each in a larger aquarium(I understand I will have to cover the top to hold in the humidity more) so that I can see them cruising around. I have 2 29 gal. tanks and was going to set it up with a natural look with fake plants, branches for climbing, etc. Should I keep it simple or go all out? I realize that the natural look will require much more diligence in cleaning.
My concern is that it may make them feel more vulnerable, etc. being in a glass space. Thoughts?
Thanks,
John Bortel

Glas Aquariums are nice for displaying animals. with enough hides im sure the snakes security wont be comprimised at all. Especially if you plan on using lots of foliage in the tank! i think its a swell idea!

Naturalistic vivaria

Hello, John,

I have always found that young Drys seem to do best within small enclosures and I normally keep all of mine in shoe box sized tubs for the first three-four months and graduate them to sweater size boxes for another three – four months and then to blanket tubs, where most stay until they are a year old, when I place them into their permanent enclosures. Keep in mind, young Drys are quite shy and often feel overwhelmed in large enclosures.
As for the humidity, the erebennus will not require as much humidity as your melanurus and unicolor, as they originate from a drier climate then the other members of the Dry clan, so try not to go overboard with keeping the moisture in, especially if such requires you to sacrifice good ventilation.
Natural looking vivaria are great; just do some research regarding the type of terrain and flora your erebennus originates from. I have maintained a few Drys in natural vivaria, but have found the long term maintenance to be extremely time consuming, due to the high metabolism Drys harbor. I have found that it is almost impossible to thoroughly clean natural wood enclosure furniture, once your charge has designated such as a suitable spot to relieve him/herself, though such should not be too much of an inconvenience. If you harbor a small collection, the time to maintain such and can easily replace or avoid the use of wood enclosure furniture, maintaining Drys within naturalistic vivaria is quite rewarding and makes an excellent show piece.

Best regards,

Jeff
