Regal Reptiles, Shawn Fay arrested

Federal, state and local law enforcement authorities arrested 18 people across Rhode Island Wednesday in a child pornography sweep.

Seventeen of the suspects were arraigned on charges of possession of child pornography. One faces a drug charge.

Investigators said they expect to make more arrests.

Investigators said one of the defendants was a city worker, one was a former Navy man and others were business owners. Two of the suspects were juveniles.

One of the defendants was Shawn Fay, was a Little League coach and was a co-owner of Regal Reptiles in Providence. Police searched his North Scituate home, found a number of exotic animals and condemned the home.

"There were two pythons, two ferrets, an alligator, scorpians and consistent with that many animals in such a small proximity. There was a lot of be concerned with regarding feces and filth in general," said Chief David Ranfall.

Ten teams totaling more than 100 agents fanned out across the state in "Operation Safe Child" with search warrants for 20 residences.

Investigators said the homes were identified as actively involved in obtaining and sharing images of child pornography on the Internet.

"The images and videos that our task force had to watch to secure and build these cases are disgusting, reprehensible and can only be valued by a corrupted mind," state police Col. Brendan Doherty said.

State Attorney General Patrick Lynch said state police used software called Operation Fairplay to search peer-to-peer networks and indentify users who were exchanging high volumes of pornographic images.

Alan Alarcon, 18, of Providence

Shawn Fay, 39, of North Scituate, a co-owner of Regal Reptiles in Providence and a Little League coach

Robert MacGregor, 48, of Pawtucket

Girard Proux, 43, of Pawtucket

George Dubuque III, 21, of Wakefield

Jeffrey Earl, 22, of Wakefield

Miguel Escobedo, 38, of Providence

Paul Hutchinson, 27, of Barrington

Joshua Page, 18, of Jamestown

Kyle Bannister, 19, of Richmond

Michael Woodard, 19, of North Kingstown

Jason Bidondi, 35, of Central Falls

Jason Demelo, 33, of Warwick

Cory Bergeron, 19, of Coventry

Juvenile, 17, of Pascoag

Juvenile, 17, of West Warwick

The fact that he was a Little League coach is terrifying.

This was subject was addressed in the (most recently posted to) Regal Reptiles thread on the BOI. I'm not trying to squash it; but I don't really think it should be spread across multiple sections of this site, either....so I moved this to the Herps in the News forum.

I would just like to pop in to say that while this is incredibly reprehensible and indefensible behavior, he and the rest of the parties involved are innocent until proven guilty.

Also, I'm not clear what having ferrets or reptiles in his apartment has to do with the case, or why its mentioned.

If they are found guilty, I do hope they go away for a long time.

well now see there was that one drug charge in there, maybe it was him. Not defending him like I know him or anything, but just remaining fair as he coulda been rolling up a j at a friends house who was a kiddie creeper. Wrong place, Wrong time situation. Idk but the whole birthday/kids show thing isnt helping his case.

The statements in the news sort of rules out a "wrong place, wrong time, misidentification scene."

I guess what really bothers me about this is that you can watch tv shows like 20/20 and see programs on how pedophiles attract children with puppies and such, but this is the first time I have seen anything about alleged pedophiles allegedly using reptiles to get close to children. There are owners of reptile collections all over the country that use their animals for both public and private exhibits and presentations, including birthday parties. I have never before heard of any of these people doing anything inappropriate with children until now.
You cant do anything with any type of animal publicly that doesn't attract children . I do a lot of public events and the thought that I, as well as others, can now be subject to pedophile allegations due to the publicity surrounding this case is very disturbing.

Birthday parties wasn't that bad i mean, I used to work there and manage some of the parties but the fact that there were little kids volunteering their time without supervision from family or friends it kind of puts a little bit of doubt in the bac of your mind dosen't

I'm not saying he did it and I'm not saying he didn't do it People who love and like to own reptiles should not be considered drug dealers or users of any sort and the fact that sum one would state reptile owners as child porn users is bull shit

That's a load of crap in my opinion, and who are the other "business owners" that were arrested, I mean out one, out all.

If he IS found guilty, he belongs UNDER the jail...NOT in it.

Or-they could just tattoo his forehead with "I'm a pedophile and I LOVE BIG SNAKES."

The other inmates will take care of the rest.

That's really disturbing because I worked there years ago. That's why I started getting involed with reptiles shawn always seemed kinda weird to me.. I hope he gets life.....

I shopped his store, bought and traded all kinds of Herps with him over the years. Much of the time he wasn't even in the store though. Unless I had a special request to meet with him in regards to a certain animal or whatever. Outwardly, he seemed okay.. However, Reptiles were the only subject of discussion and nothing more. I hope whoever his partner is can manage to keep the business afloat without him. I really loved the store, and the connections for animals through Shawn. For a few years, I literally stocked my whole inventory, by simply purchasing my animals from him, and re-distributing them out for higher prices, because nobody out there, including the internet, could ever beat his prices. The guy used to give me baby Ball Pythons, for free by the crate load, and they were literally all profit when I retailed them. I always seemed that everywhere I ever looked, I could never find a better price on anything, if I could find it anywhere else to begin with.. Anyone out there have baby File snakes in stock for $50.00 each? Even if that price went up a little in his store since my last purchase of one.. You'd be hard pressed to find a comparable price to anything he's got in the store, or in the Back room, for V.I.P's.. I hope the business stays up and running..

alright i just found this thread and thought i'd put in my two cents. i live about 10 min from regal reptile. i will not bad mouth troy the kid who most people know and deal with. he is a great guy and loves the animals. i will however let every one know that i have family in the state police and have been told that the bust that went down was not one of those things you just clicked on by mistake. it was tracked and passed throughout and around the people in question. not only that but the kind of trash that was being downloaded was very young children and babies!! this was not just a small investigation it was infact a sting. as far as shawns role it could not be discussed due to an on going investigation. with that being said he is filth. i went there a week or so after this happen and he was there doing his thing. while children were still walking in. now if you have seen the news click you know that the judge said no children around at all. i also notice that every snake in the place was covered with 7 dust. (mites for sure) i have followed many threads on craigslist and so on about died animals in cages and the mess. all i have seen for myself. on top os all this i know that his wife is still doing parties and as far as i know he's just hiding in the backround. so all beware of regal reptile.as far as the animals in his house the problem was that they were in poor conditions as well as a threat to his kids safety. rhode island is pretty cool about you having allot of animals as long as you can care for them.

like i said troy is a good kid in a bad situation and you should know this. he has always made sure to treat me right and double check any animal he sells me. but as far as shawn goes (rot in hell you piece of s**t)
