    =====================

I am still waiting on my developer to finish up on the Classifieds Control Panel so I can use it to encourage members into becoming paying members. Google Adsense has become a real burden on the viewing of this site, but honestly it is the ONLY source of income now that keeps it afloat. I tried offering disabling the ads being viewed by paying members, but apparently that is not enough incentive. Quite frankly, Google Adsense has dropped down to where it barely brings in enough daily to match even a single paid member per day. But it still gets the bills paid. But at what cost?

So even without the classifieds control panel being complete, I believe I am going to have to disable those Google ads completely and likely disable some options here that have been free since going to the new platform. Like classified ad bumping, member name changes, and anything else I can use to encourage this site to be supported by the members instead of the Google Adsense ads.

But there is risk involved. I will not pay out of pocket for very long during this last ditch experimental effort. If I find that the membership does not want to support this site with memberships, then I cannot support your being able to post your classified ads here for free. No, I am not intending to start charging for your posting ads here. I will just shut the site down and that will be it. I will be done with FaunaClassifieds. I certainly don't need this, and can live the rest of my life just fine without it. If I see that no one else really wants it to survive neither, then so be it. It goes away and you all can just go elsewhere to advertise your animals and merchandise.

Not sure when this will take place, and I don't intend to give any further warning concerning the disabling of the Google Adsense. Just as there probably won't be any warning if I decide to close down this site. You will just come here and there will be some sort of message that the site is gone, and you have a nice day.

I have been trying to make a go of this site for a very long time. And quite frankly, I am just tired of trying. I had hoped that enough people would be willing to help me help you all have a free outlet to offer your stuff for sale. But every year I see less and less people coming to this site, much less supporting it financially. That is fine. I tried. I retired the SerpenCo business about 14 years ago, so retiring out of this business completely is not that big if a step for me, nor will it be especially painful to do. When I was in Thailand, I did not check in here for three weeks. I didn't miss it even a little bit. So if you all want it to remain, it will be in your hands. I really don't care either way.

    =====================
Some people have indicated that finding the method to contribute is rather difficult. And I have to admit, that it is not all that obvious. So to help, here is a thread to help as a quide. How to become a contributing member of FaunaClassifieds.

And for the record, I will be shutting down the Google Adsense ads on January 1, 2025.

Good Guy Jeremy Stone

I read on your Facebook Jeremy that the US will not take confiscate anymore of your animals and also who ever you sold to will be able to keep those animals as well. But you didn't mention if you have any ownership in the Lucy project anymore. If you don't mind me asking are you still working the project. Im not here to pass judgement I'm just curious.

Any comment on the fake belly?
I understand that not guilty does not mean innocent. I also understand that the US Govt. can be less than up front and believable, but it was a foreign country that started all this, and the "facts" as they tell them seem pretty believable. I am sure you are eager to "move on," but when you google your name and smuggler comes up in the first several, if not dozen links, I do not think google is ever going to "move on."
I wish you luck moving foreward if you have done NOTHING wrong, and nothing to hurt this industry, but if even a small % of what they have alleged is true...

U.S. repatriates seven snakes to Brazil by plane

One of the snakes recovered from a reptile collector and breeder in Utah who illegally transported the snake's mother, a rare white boa constrictor, from Brazil to the U.S.
Department of Justice

The Justice Department (DOJ) announced Wednesday that it has repatriated seven rare boa constrictors to the government of Brazil six years after their mother was brought to the U.S. in an illegal wildlife smuggling scheme.

In other words, DOJ sent Brazil a few snakes on a plane.

The snakes' mother was the only known living white (leucistic) boa constrictor. The exceedingly rare snake, known as "Lucy" or "Diamond Princess," was found in Rio de Janeiro in 2006 and transferred to the Niterói Zoo, a private foundation that rescued and rehabilitated injured wild animals. But in January 2009, Utah-based reptile collector, breeder and salesman Jeremy Stone traveled to Brazil, managed to secure possession of the snake and "unlawfully returned with it back to the United States," according to the Justice Department.

Stone wanted to breed Lucy. The white boa was expected to be able to spawn other leucistic boas, although because its white color is the result of a recessive gene, a white boa wouldn't occur among Lucy's immediate offspring but could be born in successive generations with the breeding of two snakes bearing the leucistic gene.

Stone did manage to breed Lucy, but when he began marketing the offspring - for $12,500-$25,000 (or ten to a hundred times the cost of other boas), according to National Geographic, the Brazilian government filed a petition asserting its ownership of the Diamond Princess and sought help from the U.S. in securing the return of the boa and its offspring. Federal investigators secured a warrant to seize the snake and any offspring from Stone' property in Utah. There, they found that Lucy had died. The eight snake offspring were turned over to the U.S. Marshals Service which took them to the Hogle Zoo in Salt Lake City.

Unfortunately, one of the snakes died in the zoo.

In July 2014, Stone pleaded guilty to unlawfully transporting federal wildlife into the U.S. As part of the guilty plea, he agreed to forfeit Lucy's offspring to the U.S., which asked the court to recognize Brazil's ownership claims. The court recognized those claims in February 2015.

"This case exhibited many of the hallmarks that make illegal wildlife trafficking a growing international scourge, including actors motivated by greed who illegally smuggled rare and precious wildlife across international boundaries," said DOJ Assistant Attorney General Caldwell. "The return of the precious snakes to Brazil brings to an end this years-long international saga, and serves as an example of our commitment to working with law enforcement partners in Brazil and elsewhere to combat transnational crime."

Are Boa Constrictors rare? They make it sound like this is a conservation issue which it is not, the people in Brasil probably just thought they could get money out of the snakes themselves... sounds like a lot of effort for something that's not worth worrying about, if not for Mr. Stone the snakes would have died without breeding most likely anyway.

So Jeremy Stone pleaded guilty to unlawfully transporting federal wildlife into the U.S. and turned over eight of the offspring of the original animal he smuggled into the US. Was THAT his only "punishment"? Aside from the 8 boas turned in, how many other babies weren't and how much money did Jeremy pocket from them? A litter of only 8 boas sounds awfully small for a BCC. If there were other siblings, who were they sold to and where are they now?
The CBSNews.com article posted above by gila7150 sys, "The eight snake offspring were turned over to the U.S. Marshals Service which took them to the Hogle Zoo in Salt Lake City. Am I supposed to believe that Jeremy has NO inside connection to the Hogle Zoo in his own home state? Oh, and one of the eight snakes conveniently died under the care of the zoo keepers, before they were able to send them back to Brasil? Sorry, I don't believe it for a second. Jeremy could have arranged a substitution of any dead (freshly killed) boa that looked like one from that lot, and nobody would know the difference. Jeremy could now have a 50% het stashed away somewhere for all we know. If a leucistic boa suddenly turns up again someday in the future, why will I NOT be surprised?
I hope Jeremy was heavily fined for his actions, but it seems like he just got a slap on the wrist. People like him should be banned from the reptile trade IMO. I also hope no one here would support him. I have in the past, but never again.

What do you want them to do, stone the guy.. no pun lol

Well, if he was able to keep proceeds from the sale of any babies, or still has babies from that breeding stashed away, are you saying, that's cool and t's all good? If there's no deterrent to stop people like Jeremy from illegally smuggling animals, what makes you think Jeremy himself won't do it again? I personally think he will. but that's cool. It's all good!

If I'm not mistaken, he entered into a plea agreement. If so, all of his denials were complete bluffing on his part. Now this project has been renamed the "Fire" in an obvious attempt to separate them from Jeremy's animals.
So these are ads for descendants of the female that Jeremy smuggled into the US? Wouldn't the Brazilian government have a claim to them?

Yes, the project was renamed Fire and there are offspring in the US and UK as far as I know, I believe more info might be in the thread that was linked above.

Wouldn't the Brazilian government have a claim to them?

I was wondering the same thing.

My experience with him has been awsome. +1 vote for good guy

I don't doubt that you, as well as others here have had good experiences with Jeremy Stone in the past. To vote him as a "good guy", knowing he committed a felony that put a negative spotlight on the reptile industry, is pretty f'd up at best.:shrug01:
I've had dealings with him in the past that were shady on his part, and now it's not hard to understand why. The guy is a shady character that I personally won't be dealing with again.:NoNo:

My opinion.
The zoo keeper saw how much money he was making, decided to change his story. That animal would have just died in that zoo. I for one am glad he got some babies from it.

Was the Zoo Audited, reason why all this came out ?

Fire Diamond ?

So, after reading the News story, smuggled/falsified paper work in order to get the White boa through customs. I dont see the big deal = ) ! You know the kind of crap that goes though customs everyday ?

My thoughts would be this- If anything, the zoo may be at fault just as much (Giving him the benefit of the doubt) there is a big grey area between zoo/locals. I think there may be more to the situation than meets the eye. However, making that kind of money on off spring is a different story.

Cheers.

It is absolutely unbelievable, the lengths some of you seem to be willing go to condone / explain away biopiracy and smuggling. The Stones, through a scheme of forgery, exploitation, direct lies and explicit smuggling, took a natural resource from the country and people of Brazil, all the while lying to you and denying it to your faces and threatening litigation to anyone who spoke up against them - yet you stick up for them. These are quite obviously people exhibiting multiple common hallmarks of "Bad Guys", as it whatever local yokel facilitated the smuggling operation out of Brazil.

Let me try to explain why this isn't isolated, and affects people trying to work within the law. Brazil is already among the hardest countries for foreign scientists to work in. They already require FBI background checks on us as part of a complicated research visa. People pulling stunts like this, in conjunction with American bioprospecting (which this was, in a way), is exactly the reason why there is a huge distrust of Americans in this and other foreign countries like India. It already takes us months and months to get tissues out of the country because of past issues with this nonsense. Please don't make it harder!

To say it is worth it because there are now white mutt Boa constrictors to be had as pets really chaps my ass. The fact that many of you seen to covet these animals for your own personal use to the point that you're willing to excuse the Stones' behavior turns my stomach, and is frankly embarrassing to have to explain to folks not familiar with the hobby.

Very well said alex. I personally hope they start confiscating the descendans of diamond that people bought.

It really makes me laugh out loud that people went so far as to rename the morph to separate themselves from jeremy. Everyone knows they ate direct descendants as well and changing the name is just plain stupid. Also thinking that this now "protects" them from losing their animals is just plain ignorance. Personally I can't wait till it happens. This is a huge black eye for our community and anyone that supports jeremy, what Jeremy has done, or this morph deserves what's coming. Till then I will be pulling up a chair and popping some pop corn

Oh and who cares about yet another white snake.
.....pathetic really

Will

Sorry for the spelling error on my previous post. It should read.... Everyone knows they are. ..... not everyone knows they ate
Will

Alexander, you took the words right out of my mouth. I'm appalled by the complacency here. It seems the members of this community have really gone down hill in terms of morality. IMO, that one white snake may as well be a white rhino. The principle is the same, except it would be a bit harder to smuggle. If Jeremy could though, why not?http://www.cnn.com/2015/04/16/africa/kenya-northern-white-rhino/
