    =====================

    I am still waiting on my developer to finish up on the Classifieds Control Panel so I can use it to encourage members into becoming paying members. Google Adsense has become a real burden on the viewing of this site, but honestly it is the ONLY source of income now that keeps it afloat. I tried offering disabling the ads being viewed by paying members, but apparently that is not enough incentive. Quite frankly, Google Adsense has dropped down to where it barely brings in enough daily to match even a single paid member per day. But it still gets the bills paid. But at what cost?

    So even without the classifieds control panel being complete, I believe I am going to have to disable those Google ads completely and likely disable some options here that have been free since going to the new platform. Like classified ad bumping, member name changes, and anything else I can use to encourage this site to be supported by the members instead of the Google Adsense ads.

    But there is risk involved. I will not pay out of pocket for very long during this last ditch experimental effort. If I find that the membership does not want to support this site with memberships, then I cannot support your being able to post your classified ads here for free. No, I am not intending to start charging for your posting ads here. I will just shut the site down and that will be it. I will be done with FaunaClassifieds. I certainly don't need this, and can live the rest of my life just fine without it. If I see that no one else really wants it to survive neither, then so be it. It goes away and you all can just go elsewhere to advertise your animals and merchandise.

    Not sure when this will take place, and I don't intend to give any further warning concerning the disabling of the Google Adsense. Just as there probably won't be any warning if I decide to close down this site. You will just come here and there will be some sort of message that the site is gone, and you have a nice day.

    I have been trying to make a go of this site for a very long time. And quite frankly, I am just tired of trying. I had hoped that enough people would be willing to help me help you all have a free outlet to offer your stuff for sale. But every year I see less and less people coming to this site, much less supporting it financially. That is fine. I tried. I retired the SerpenCo business about 14 years ago, so retiring out of this business completely is not that big if a step for me, nor will it be especially painful to do. When I was in Thailand, I did not check in here for three weeks. I didn't miss it even a little bit. So if you all want it to remain, it will be in your hands. I really don't care either way.

    =====================
    Some people have indicated that finding the method to contribute is rather difficult. And I have to admit, that it is not all that obvious. So to help, here is a thread to help as a quide. How to become a contributing member of FaunaClassifieds.

    And for the record, I will be shutting down the Google Adsense ads on January 1, 2025.

So the story is that without me knowing as a surprise, My son bought me a red phase female Western Hog at the Daytona show. He bought it from JMG Reptiles for $180.00. (they were asking 200) He showed it to me on the car ride home and the snakes tail was swollen like a turnip. I emailed the owner on Monday morning but did not hear back for a few days.. He admitted that he knew it was like this and sold it anyway without disclosing the health issues. He did offer a replacement snake if I pay shipping both ways which would be around $120.00.(That would put the snake around $300.00!)I think what he did was dishonest and he should pay all shipping.. Am I out of line here?

here is the first email

Hay buddy, My 13yo son bought a female western hog from you Saturday at the Daytona show for 180.00. Her tail south of the vent is swollen up like a turnip... I can send pictures just let me know..

Hi Chris,
a lot of adult female hognose have that, they get swollen musk glands from musk building up in their scent glands. If you go to any hognose forum and post it everyone will tell you the same thing. If you get them to musk a lot the swollen appearance will greatly reduce but since their musk glands are stretched out they fill right back up. It does not affect their health or breeding.

The snake isn't sick, I would say about 25% - 40% of all female hognose end up with enlarged scent glands as adults. It does not cause any health problems. If you don't believe me ask any large hognose breeder or post it on a hogose forum. If you want a refund we can do that but we can't pay for the shipping, we could also send you another adult female hognose if you send her back but can't pay shipping on sending a new one or receiving her. I have three more adult females I am selling, two of the three have enlarged musk glands the one isn't very noticeable.

I honestly don't know what to do here. Selling a snake in less than perfect condition and calling it not a big deal is not right. A 13yo paid 180bucks of his hard earned money for a snake and I don't feel that he got what he paid for. I wish I was with him when he picked it out. Should he chalk it up to a lesson learned? Now to fix it he has to put in another 100 plus dollars for shipping.. I will talk with him tonight.

The only thing wrong with the snake is that it's tail is not aesthetically pleasing. You seem to be ignoring what I am telling you about the snake. In my first e-mail I told you it was enlarged musk glands and is common in adult females for this species of snake and you reply back and say the snake is sick.

I have Googled it and have found only one post on it. You don't seen to understand what you did is unethical, selling the snakes when you knew they had issues(whatever they may be) without any disclosure to the customer. (A 13yo mind you) And at full retail price might I ad.

It's not an issue. Please post it on a hognose forum, you will get a lot of reponses stating it is common or e-mail some large hognose breeders on the topic. I can trade it out for another female if you are going to be at any expos or shows we will be at. We won't be at any more Florida shows for the year though.

To start off, they violated one of my personal rules. I always respectfully ask children to come back with an adult, even when they say "Mom just gave me this money to buy this animal."

Noelle

When buying in person, you should always check the animal over and address any concerns with the seller. I've seen less than perfect animals at shows for lower prices. Never leave the show before that.

I've dealt with Jeff for years and have never had a problem. I'm sure I've spend thousands over the years. He's always professional and super friendly. He's always willing to answer questions and help out even when he's busy.

I don't know much about hognose, but if that is a normal common thing, it's no big deal. You should research an animal before buying it.

I have never heard of a Hognose getting "enlarged scent glands".....maybe somebody with more experience with that species can chime in, but that sounds like a load of BS to me. I've had several adult, hatchling and juvenile Western Hogs over the years and none of them had this, nor has anyone that I know had this happen.

I'm not able to see your picture.

I did find this online, but not sure if it's the same thing: Frequently female colubrids will "pop" or evert their cloacae. This may also be accompanied by a discharge of musk or urea. Two small red spots can be seen just aft of the cloacal scale on either side of the vent. These are the tips of her scent glands.

You noticed it on the car ride home, why not turn right around and take it back? You must not have thought it was that bad at the time. :shrug01:

Someone sells me something that doesn't look right (would have noticed it before I purchased, though), and I notice it in the parking lot, I'm going right back in there, not waiting a couple days to send an email.

I found this, too:

Musk gland infection/impaction. ..cage floor and bedding too dirty clean more often use a disinfectant,
email for a simple Proceedure developed by Alan Cole to relieve the gland.

I'm not really sure what to think. Again, you should have checked it before leaving. However, if there is an abnormal issue, it needs to be resolved. Sounds like the scent glands can swell and be relieved at home. Maybe like dog anal glands?

Ive purchases animals from Jmg never had a problem with my animals from them. I have seen this on female hogs after breeding it sometimes goes down and isnt noticeable and sometimes it's stays that way haven't seen in affect an animals health... But I agree with the above post why wouldn't you take it back immediately if dissatisfied. Also I would not sell to a minor

Since your son purchased this snake in person he should have (or you should have) evaluated the snake thoroughly before the purchase (Or at the very least before leaving the building/parking lot), on the other hand the seller should have disclosed any issues that the snake had prior to selling the snake to your son as he admitted that he was aware of the issue - Now i'm not sure if this is a common problem in the Hognose species as i have very little experience with them so the seller might have assumed you were aware of this problem within the species, i don't believe there was ill intent on the sellers part regardless. I am on the fence with this one as both parties could have handled things differently IMHO.

I sent Jeff an e-mail about this. Not sure if he's around this weekend though.

Just notified Jeff jr about forum since he deals with the hogs sorry about the hard reading in above post dang auto correct
