FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE -- July 26, 2010 - Biggers & Callaham LLC., D/B/A Mice Direct of Cleveland Georgia is recalling frozen reptile feed (mice, rats, chicks), because it has the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella. Salmonella can affect animals and there is risk to humans from handling contaminated pet products. People handling contaminated pet food can become infected with Salmonella, especially if they have not thoroughly washed their hands after having contact with the product or any surfaces exposed to these products.
Healthy people infected with Salmonella should monitor themselves for some or all of the following symptoms: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, abdominal cramping and fever. Rarely, Salmonella can result in more serious ailments, including arterial infections, endocarditis, arthritis, muscle pain, eye irritation, and urinary tract symptoms. Consumers exhibiting these signs after having contact with this product should contact their healthcare providers.
The frozen reptile feed was distributed in all states, except Hawaii, through pet stores and by mail order and direct delivery.
Frozen reptile feed was shipped in plastic bags with the following product codes M-SP100, M-P100, M-PF100, M-F100, M-H100, M-W50, M-A50, M-JA25, R-P100, R-F50, R-PUP50, R-W50, R-S50, R-M20, R-L10,R-J5, R-C5, R-M3 followed by E9, F9, G9, H9, I9, J9, K9, L9 or A10, B10, C10, D10, E10, F10, G10 and whole frozen chicks in 25 count bags.
Human illnesses that may be related to the frozen reptile feed have been reported in 17 states. The recalled product should not be fed to animals, even after heating in a microwave oven, since the heating may not be adequate to kill Salmonella. The recall is based upon sampling by the FDA of frozen mice. The company continues their investigation.
Products shipped after 07/24/2010, will be irradiated in a similar manner as raw food for human consumption in order to address the Salmonella issue associated with these products.
Consumers who purchased reptile feed from Mice Direct are urged to contact Mice Direct by telephone at 888-747-0736 from 9:00a.m-5:00p.m EST Monday-Friday or by e-mail at [email protected] for instructions concerning this recall and for credits towards replacement of unused product.

There isn't anything wrong with Mice Direct's Rodents. FDA has been investigating links between handling Rodents and getting Salmonella. There isn't any case against Mice Direct specifically - just general cases linking the handling of rats/mice & getting Salmonella. They chose to start their investigation at the Mice Direct facility.

It is a fact that Mice & Rats carry Salmonella, so it is no surprise that the FDA found Salmonella in Mice Direct's products. The simple truth is that their Rodents are completely safe to use FOR THEIR INTENDED PURPOSE - Feeding your pet Reptiles. And people need to wash their hands after touching them. Most people know this-

Mice Direct has fully cooperated with the FDA and has already begun the process of Irradiating all products before they ship -- Something that no other Rodent dealer is doing. Expect to see Rodent Pro, American Rodent & the others to be held to same standards.

I'm thinking that if some posters here are friends with Mice Direct they will simply let the recall take its course and the the efforts toward safety as far as irradiation speak for themselves.

A whitewash is not appropriate at this time, it may make some disregard the recall efforts and the emphasis on safety.

For the record, there have been 17 cases linked to frozen feeders, NOT 17 cases linked to Mice Direct. Mice Direct has become the FDA punching bag for the entire frozen feeder industry. The FDA is trying to determine if they should regulate the frozen feeder market like they do dog food. This will effect all of the frozen feeder producers.

Let's remember that this is the media that tells the public your BP will kill the family pet or even a child. They blow everything out of proportion for the sensationalism and twist the facts. I will state it again, there are 17 cases linked to frozen feeders, not to Mice Direct....and speaking of which, if they were ordering frozen feeders, then it stands to reason they have reptiles, and we ALL KNOW how the media LOVES to report that reptiles carry salmonella, right.....just saying. Salmonella is often contracted from handling undercooked or raw meat, like chicken or hamburger meat or IDK....thawed out mice!! What idiot doesn't know to wash up afterward. Seriously, think it thru people.

This is not an attempt to injure their business practices or hurt them.
If you read the artical it gives product codes to watch out for. Not to different than tylenol's issues right now.

This is to inform you that MiceDirect has issued a voluntary recall. Over the years we have regularly tested our rodents for any potential issues. During one of these recent tests it was detected that a portion of our rodents may be potentially carrying Salmonella. Because of this we are offering a voluntary recall option to our customers.

Facts:

This particular type of Salmonella cannot be passed to your reptile. Reptiles carry other specific strains.

Salmonella is common in almost all groups of both domestic and wild animals
Salmonella can make you sick, small children and frail or elderly people are more susceptible.
Washing your hands prevents this risk of illness from Salmonella. Please wash your hands when handling.



When handling raw product, such as rodents, chicken, pork, beef or any dead animal, it is very important to thoroughly wash your hands. Washing your hands should keep you from becoming sick in the event you come into contact with Salmonella.

What we are doing:

We begun a voluntary program to irradiate all pet food products.

All of our products starting on July 24, 2010 are irradiated, in a similar manner to raw food for human consumption.
We are irradiating our products at a level equivalent to the standards for human consumption.
This product continues to be fully acceptable for consuming reptiles.
You can be confident that our quality standards meet or exceed the standards currently held by other companies.
