    Google Adsense ad revenue for December, 2025 was just $30 over the cost of the lease for the server running this site. So, in effect, the money providing the incentive for me to continue running this site is coming SOLELY from the paid memberships and sponsorships here. Which honestly ain't much....

Okay I have a dumb but serious question. I have never had to mark my Bearded dragons before, and with our forst two clutches in the incubator, I got to wondering what in the Herp world do you use to mark your animals??? I have seen many colors textures shapes and sizes, but what is safe???

I use a dab of nail polish - just a tiny dab in different patterns or colors to distinguish one individual from another. It will shed off.

I always love going to buy the paint pens I use. I get them at craft stores typically (just cause its where my wife wants to go lol). Get to the cashier and she will look at my colors of 1 blue paint pen and 1 pink paint pen and asks "what you using those for" I answer "to identify babies" responce "um excuse me?" i say "i mark my lizards with these" responce "ewwww" lol.

:yesnod: Yep, typical responses from the uninitiated. :rofl:

I get the same kind of responses when I go buy bales of Aspen and inform them it's for the rats I breed to feed my snakes (of course, they ASK).

But I had wondered what did the colors on the base of those baby dragons' tails signified.

Well at the beginning of a season (IE when they start pipping) I will assign a Color code of sorts. Like this clutch is pink then blue next clutch blue then pink next clutch orange purple and so on in that fashion. This way I can have a date in conjunction with the color code. Then I add a 3rd dot to signify the sex after the 4 week mark when I sex them.

That is organized!

It was mentioned that it sheds off, so I assume that you have to refresh the mark on a regular basis to keep the clutches straight?

Yes and no. You have to refresh the markings because it does shed off but not entirely. The pigment fades through slightly. It typically takes 2-3 sheds to come off entirely. That is why the non-toxic paint pens are neccessary because if you use a latex based toxic paint, on top of the possibly fumes caused from the heat, it could cause other problems if absorbed to far into the skin.

I like the idea of the pens i will check into it. We use Tempera paint which is non toxic but it does not bleed thru which would help when they shed.:thumbsup:

I have had folks tell me it doesnt work that way for them. But I can make it out still after a shed. It is possibly due to me touching the "dots" up constantly as well. I am slightly overly maticulous when it comes to stuff like that lol.

What name brand and type due you use of pens?? With touching up that's why you probably see it thru the shed
 
I dont do much marking. i have 18 baby cages. so theres enough room for most part of the year. I seen all kinds of markings. people writing in marker on there bellies. dabs of nail polish, or marker in between there back legs. I think water base paint also works, because it's water base and not oil base. and it comes off in the first shed.
