    Google Adsense ad revenue for December, 2025 was just $30 over the cost of the lease for the server running this site. So, in effect, the money providing the incentive for me to continue running this site is coming SOLELY from the paid memberships and sponsorships here. Which honestly ain't much....

I have a baby yellow ackie and i feed it roaches turkey meet not big enough for pinkies yet but anyway i was wondering what are some other people diet like for example Monday Roaches Tuesday 2 pinkies Wednesday roaches with superworms etc etc ...........egg etc just want o good routine want some good tips thanks :thumbsup:
 
sounds sufficent thus far, you can add crickets and small chunks of shrimp ( bite size )
Make sure your turkey diet follows the exact guidelines given by Jeff Lemm ( San Diego Zoo - turkey diet ) - 10 pounds lean ground turkey, 90 grams steamed bone meal, and 2 grounded tablets of Centrum.

Give him / her enough heat and room to move and you'll be set. I would also suggest using UVB bulbs if your not using them already.
 
Sounds like you're doing everything correct. At Discovery Reptiles we give our varanids and teiids a large variety of different foods. We never feed our carnivores every day since its likely that they wouldn't eat every day in the wild. For example our feed list is as below.

Monday- Raw beef/ground meat/liver/hearts (Calcium)
Tuesday- Fast
Wednesday- Chicken (Vitamins)
Thursday- Fish
Friday- Fast
Saturday- Egg, cantaloupe for monitors, (Calcium)
Sunday- Fast

We give our varanids a treat every so often and feed them a rodent or two. Maybe about every 3 weeks we will give them rodents. Its not good to give them to much because all the air will cause a bowel obstructions (it happened with a Savannah of ours that was donated to us.) Sadly the Savannah passed away, after the necropsy our vet said it was most likely due to excessive hair build up since its previous owners fed it only rats and mice. It sounds like you are doing a great job though Edgar. Keep up the great work!
 
I know this is a bit of an old post, but I'm glad to see others using the SDZ diet. We've used that as part of our Savs' diet and have had great success with it. Both of our boys are right on target with their calcium levels and are the healthy as little horses. :D

So mainly meats huh? And is that cantaloupe I see there? For monitors?
Im sorry but that diet looks way worse than the mice and rats that dead sav was eating prior to your care.
Savs are specialized insectivores / snail eaters.
Other monitors are typically opportunists that eat mainly WHOLE animals.

For a sav the best thing would be crix, roaches, mealworms, with a few snails, crabs (or crawfish), and hoppers tossed in once a week or so.

The last thing you want to do is feed meats.

I have a baby blackthroat i feed him crickets and supers and garden snails. not big enough for mice ima try to get crawfish somehow thanks he wont eat any egg or meats anyway he only wants insects

Oh cool, I have one too. Be warned, they can grow FAST! And I mean 10" a month fast when young. Mine's somewhere around 40" and eats:
mice
chicks
snails
goby fish
frogs
quail eggs
whole shrimp
crab

And as treats:
ground alligator meat
cooked chicken hearts
lean turkey/ w cooked egg yolk
all sprinkled with bone flour and vitamins

I have a young (about 24in) roughneck and she will only eat live mice or rat pups, I have tried shrimp eggs turkey cat food, nothing seems to be her fancy, any suggestions?

Most monitors find frogs irresistable, and the tend to be much leaner than rat pups. You can get these frozen from an asian market as well, or order them im sure.
 
I'm going to advise against feeding frogs to your monitor unless you know FOR SURE it's a naturally occurring species that your rudi would eat in the wild and even then you could be risking illness. Frogs have toxins in their skin that can be poisonous to a monitor even dead and frozen since the toxins generally are not removed because of freezing.

Your choice really but be very very cautious.

The frogs offered whole and for human consumption dont contain any toxins in the skin.
