I recently bought a a new for my ball cage made from black plastic with a clear plexi front door. Inside the cage though is where the light housing is i am concerned that if the light comes on and my little ball is on it that it may get burnt is this a reasonable worry. I am using a 50 watts repti light and gets quite hot. Does this pose any serious risk and should i change or manipulate the light to be housed outside the cage? I'll post pics if necessary

Is it a standard incandescent house light bulb socket? Are you using the light for heat or just light?

They make a flourescent bulb at walmart that has a plastic guard around it (for softer light). I use that in my herpenclosure and it works fine. It keeps the snake from burning itself.

Also, I am looking into LED lighting for my enclosures. They are great for low light & low heat. Two stages, brighter white during the day and low red at night.

Are you using the light for heat, or just for illumination?

Well I guess i am using it for both heat and illumnination i dont feel my uth is making the ambient temperature much higher than 80 so i feel that the the two together are work great but i am afraid of the burn if he gets wrapped around it.

As long as your basking spot is around 84~86 degrees, you don't need the ambient temp to be above 80, so you may be able to just do without the light.

I would try one of the bulbs like the one I attached. It will probably warm it up a few degrees more but not that hot to the touch. I've been trying to use a little electric tape to direct the light away from blinding me but it's only 9w and protects the snake from breaking the bulb too.

Sorry amigo, didn't mean to step on yer toes....not enough coffee this morning :ack2:

Mi casa es su casa hombre!! :D

No, it will warm the enclosure a little bit more but only a few degrees. It's pretty warm to the touch but more like a radiant heat panel than a bare-glass incandescent bulb.

I wouldn't use it as a sole heating source unless you are housing something that wouldn't require such an increase as Ball Pythons, but maybe something a little more cooler.

It's only a couple dollars and if it doesn't work for you, you can always throw it in a lamp.
