In short, DON'T! Email notices are to ONLY alert you of a reply to your private message or your ad on this site. Replying to the email just wastes your time as it goes NOWHERE, and probably pisses off the person you thought you replied to when they think you just ignored them. So instead of complaining to me about your messages not being replied to from this site via email, please READ that email notice that plainly states what you need to do in order to reply to who you are trying to converse with.

Yeah, I know. They are a pain in the butt. But they pay the bills to keep my server running. Just a fact of life, I am afraid.

Want to get rid of them? Simple. Just become a Contributor level member or above and they will be gone. -> Please click HERE."

Is that too much for me to ask of you to keep this site running? Well, sorry about that. I too wish I could get everything for free. But alas.....

    =====================

Google Adsense ad revenue for December, 2025 was just $30 over the cost of the lease for the server running this site. So, in effect, the money providing the incentive for me to continue running this site is coming SOLELY from the paid memberships and sponsorships here. Which honestly ain't much....

After reading over many BOI threads, it's apparent that scammers will always find ways to sink to new lows to swindle an unsuspecting buyer or seller.
I want to offer a suggestion that could possibly help reduce the amount of scamming going on in the ads posted here.
Make it a requirement a for picture(s) within an ad to include a handwritten sign that shows the seller's Fauna Classifieds user name and date the photo was taken. This will at least show some legitimacy in that the item or animal being sold belongs to the seller. If the seller is posting multiple pictures of multiple animals, then one sign is required for each individual animal. If the seller is only posting multiple pictures of the same animal, then only one of the pictures needs to have the sign present.
I know some may consider this a hassle, but sometimes taking preventative measures can be!

Example: Sorry for the picture size. FYI, he's really not for sale! :D

This has been proposed before, but the idea has at least two major faults:
1) It is very easy to add that "proof" to an image found online
2) Even accepting that a person has the animal, there is no guarantee it will be shipped

Just out of curiosity, how would you recommend that such a policy be enforced? What sort of measures would be taken against people that didn't comply? Heck, we're still fighting an ongoing battle over the location field issue, lol.

Now you've done it, Charles. You're going to be flooded with offers for your Buddha! Everything's for sale for the right price...

LOL! I want the BUUUUUUUUUUUUDDHA! hahahaha! 7.00 free shipping? Do you have it in pink by any chance? :)))

Seriously though... a scammer is a scammer is a scammer. No matter what controls are put into play, there will always be someone who gets by. Pay with a protected payment source like Paypal or Credit Card. If there's a problem and the seller is unwilling to resolve it... hit the dispute button.

Personally I agree, scammers are like roaches (not my dubia's though:D)....we all try very hard to keep them away, to not see them, and to squash them every chance we get......But they will never all just go away. They will always be here to torment us! (Roaches and Scammers)

I do also agree that any steps that CAN be taken to TRY and make the scamming situation a little less aparent, SHOULD be taken. Problem is no one really knows the best way to do this. I think the idea of taking a picture COULD help, but again.....who knows??

Lasty I am curious as to how we would enforce this?
Thanks everyone, and SAFE dealings!!--Amanda

Scammers

I buy a fair amount of dragons. 99%? Classifieds like this site offers is where I go. My rule of thumb is simple. Does the seller take enough pride in what they do to respond to me in a decent amount of time? Does the seller take the take time to discuss the deal on the phone and answer my questions. If the answer to both questions isn't "Yes"? Then I'm buying. If the answer to either one of those questions is "No", I'm out. They aren't worth the time to deal with.

Case in point. I have offers out on 6 dragons right now. I'm searching for patternless females and super rich red males and females. 2 sellers have taken the time to respond. The rest? *&^% Them.

I have a 2,000.00 per month budget for the acquisition of quality dragons to enhance my breeding projects. You would think a legit seller would take the time to grab some of it.

Sadly though... that's not the case. Just go with your gut. If it sounds too good to be true... it usually is. If you start feeling itchy about the person you are dealing with? Be safe. Walk away.

Agreed. If I'm selling, I post a pic, as well as offer more angles to any serious buyer. I like the idea of a signed photo, but I know personally how easy it is to violate: I bought a Uroplatus a while back that had a current photo. Unfortunately they sold the same animal to several people. Paypal got my money back, but it's still a hassle.

I wasn't aware this was previously proposed. I tried to do a forum search before posting this and didn't find anything, but I must've missed it.

1) Adding a fake sign can be done with some photo magic, but I guess that I just had high hopes that somehow making more work for them will cause them reconsider since it involves more than just stealing a photo from the internet or altering an animals appearance.
2) Scams happen in different phases of a transaction, so I wasn't suggesting this as the end all solution. This was only addressing the initial phase being the ad.
I've already given up on this proposal, but just wanted to address your final question. Enforcement can be done by notifying a seller (PM) that a sign needs to be added or their ad will be taken down. I know that will entail a lot of work from the moderators in the beginning as a lot of new changes usually do.

Please excuse my lack of quoting skills!

"Seriously though... a scammer is a scammer is a scammer. No matter what controls are put into play, there will always be someone who gets by."
:iagree: Yea...I was just hoping to somehow make it more difficult.

"I think the idea of taking a picture COULD help, but again.....who knows??"
This holds true to any possible solution that hasn't been tested. Again, reading everyone's feedback has given me a new perspective on this. Geee, thanks for sinking my battleship guys... JK!!

Noelle, that's very true, but Michael's $7 plus free shipping is a loooong way from it!

Thanks Everyone!

Ok ok... 7.89 :))) It was a good idea amigo. It's just hard to put in a control that eliminates the minority in our market without putting constraints on the majority.

I juat wanted to let you know I was the statement of mine you highlighted I was actually saying that statement with Optimism :) up until the ....'s then I was sighing. I hate trying to show emotion when typing! I think what really matters here is at least you were trying to think of something! The more of us that post ideas, the better it will get. At one point in time exterminators only used their boots, then someone thought of chemicals:thumbsup: Thanks and good luck everyone!!

Enforcement of something like this would be a major pain in the butt. And the number of "screw u" emails in response to the enforcement would flood our email inboxes, for certain. It would be a LOT to ask of everyone to comply with something of this nature. And as has been pointed out, this can be falsified, and in my opinion, the most likely people to have the most incentive to comply might very well be the people inclined to scam others, since those efforts would bring the biggest reward to them. After all, they will be getting something from you for free, so the effort could pay off very well for them.

This would try to shift the burden of sensible buying and selling from the buyers and sellers to the management of this site to filter out the scammers that would come here. Would be nice if feasible, but we just cannot protect YOU from THEM. YOU have to make sensible choices in how you do business and who you do business with. WE have to be careful that we don't make so many burdensome rules for participating here that legitimate concerns don't just throw their hands up in frustration and go somewhere else EASIER to do business at. So we have no choice but to put most of the burden on YOU to do your homework and make rational and informed decisions.

We require a TRUE full name and location in the profile of the people doing business on this site. This is for what I hope is a very good reason. It gives you a handle on who is advertising that merchandise or who it is trying to buy from you. Quite frankly, if someone tells you that the name on their account here or their location is different as to where they want you to send the money or merchandise, that SHOULD be a very big red flag to you. That person has already lied in public, and then is telling you that they will lie to everyone else but you. Yeah, sure..... And I have a big bridge in New York to sell to you when you are done with that transaction....

Those profile fields are there to help you identify the OP in a transaction. I strongly suggest you use that information as a guide to help you make a rational decision about your business dealings. Scammers will lie. They will lie CONVINCINGLY. They will tell you anything they feel it will take to make their score with you and STEAL from you. If they are lying here about their identity, then there is a strong probability that they will certainly lie to you about everything else as well.

Sure, anyone can put in a false name and/or location here. But when it comes time to send money to them, or send a shipment, then things get dicey for them if they have provided false information here. I suggest paying via a method that requires a true identity and location. And when you get that information, check what is listed in their profile on this site. If it does not match, then you had better be paying close attention to what you are doing.

Just remember that the best liars are those that are convincing that it is the truth. Most will try to put you in a rush to buy or sell so you feel like you CAN'T take the time to check on facts and details. But take your time and be thorough about what you are doing. You will soon forget losing a good deal because you were TOO cautious, but you will NEVER FORGET getting screwed by a scammer because you were not cautious enough.

If you make sound policies about how you do business, then you greatly reduce the risk of getting taken by the scammers swirling around in the waters around you every day.

So quite frankly, if you do decide to buy or sell to someone using false identifying info here, and you DO get scammed, well, whose fault will that be? We can only do so much, but if we take the time and trouble to hand you the tools to try to help you, YOU HAVE to use those tools. If you fail, or refuse, to use those tools we offer you to HELP you, then I guess we'll be reading about your transaction on the BOI pretty soon...

I completely understand everything Rich layed out. I noticed other forums do this so I thought I'd put it out there...even though I didn't think it through first.
Michael, $7.89 may get you a super sized meal at McDonald's but not this Buddha!
Amanda, I did understand where you where coming with your post. I tried! :)

I will also state.. as mentioned.. It would not stop people from not sending the animal/selling same animal multiple times etcetc..

but..

it would stop a LOT of people from using this site I think.. I know I have tried other sites.. and when it came time to sell animals.. I got irked.. I take a variety of photos to get the best lighting etc etc, and to incorporate the name/date etc.. was just annoying.. since people always want different angles.. well I take many angles in 1 sitting.. so if I have to re-do the slips every single time..

just annoying and a waste of time. I never went back to those site.. *shrugs* just my personal feelings on it.
