• Responding to email notices you receive.
    **************************************************
In short, DON'T! Email notices are to ONLY alert you of a reply to your private message or your ad on this site. Replying to the email just wastes your time as it goes NOWHERE, and probably pisses off the person you thought you replied to when they think you just ignored them. So instead of complaining to me about your messages not being replied to from this site via email, please READ that email notice that plainly states what you need to do in order to reply to who you are trying to converse with.

Yeah, I know. They are a pain in the butt. But they pay the bills to keep my server running. Just a fact of life, I am afraid.

Want to get rid of them? Simple. Just become a Contributor level member or above and they will be gone. -> Please click HERE."

Is that too much for me to ask of you to keep this site running? Well, sorry about that. I too wish I could get everything for free. But alas.....

    =====================

Google Adsense ad revenue for December, 2025 was just $30 over the cost of the lease for the server running this site. So, in effect, the money providing the incentive for me to continue running this site is coming SOLELY from the paid memberships and sponsorships here. Which honestly ain't much....

I've seen a lot of comments over the years about the moderators doing their jobs, but I think it is time for a bit of a reminder about what our job is here.

First, and foremost, our job is to enforce the rules of the site. Please, read that again....our job is to enforce the rules of the site. That means we have some set guidelines within which we can operate. We have a bit of latitude, of course; but there are things that we will do, and things we will not do.
What we will do is pretty straightforward, honestly. We will interject if a situation is going "too far"...this may be done privately, or publicly. We will take action to end something that has already crossed lines. We will notify members when their posts are unacceptable - occasionally this is done in the form of a post, but more often it is in private (infractions are private, unless somebody opts to whine about them).
We may move threads that are incorrectly placed; but that is not a given because it requires that we make a decision on where to move them...and the obvious (to us) choice sometimes makes the OP unhappy. For example, if a topic is placed in the Herp Related Items category of the classifieds, there isn't a direct correlation in the discussion areas, so there could be 3-4 sections that would be a reasonable fit.

Now, here's what some people don't seem to grasp. What we won't do...
We won't edit your posts to remove parts that break the rules, or that you decide you shouldn't have put there.
We do not edit BOI threads - not even something as seemingly benign as the subject's name.
We won't close a thread, especially on the BOI, just because somebody (or a group) says it should be closed.
We won't remove a post or thread that reflects negatively on you or your business, or that causes you hardship.
We won't remove a thread because people disagree with it, feel that it is unwarranted, or think it is a bad idea.
We won't ban somebody because a bad guy thread is started about them.
We won't ban somebody unless they are breaking the rules of this site. We don't like scammers any more than the rest of you, but we simply cannot play judge and jury in those matters.

I understand that on some sites, the moderators DO remove parts of posts, change words, remove entire threads, etc as a matter of course...but that isn't how things work here, and it does sometimes make things more difficult/confusing. Us leaving a post that clearly violates the rules is not a sign of acceptance (so don't follow suit). To make it just a bit more confusing, there are times that we will remove threads - these are usually things that are incorrectly placed in the BOI, but there are other reasons.

A couple of other things we will do:
We will make mistakes. We aren't perfect, it happens. We're usually pretty good about admitting them, and correcting them, when appropriate.
We will miss things. This is a large, busy site; we can't possibly read every post. If you see something you feel we should be aware of, please, use the Report Post function - this is a better option than PMing a moderator.

I'm sure I've omitted some things, but it's been a long night.

**Oh - on the subject of editing BOI threads. One thing that we will do is remove a member's posts if they are violating the full name rule (including posting under a name which is not theirs). We don't delete the post, so it looks as if it wasn't made...we make it obvious, and replace their text with a message stating why.

(Yes, this was prompted by a post in a BOI thread, but I didn't want to add to the disruption by responding there.
Vinny - I'm not sure why you don't understand these things after all this time, but I'm pretty sure this won't help....)

By the way...if people are set on bashing this site, and do so pretty much any time they post, it should be expected that at some point their welcome will wear thin. At that point, urging us to stop the morons, do something, or do our jobs often backfires, lol.

I think the moderators are doing just fine. Although I may not agree with everything, (e.g. leaving content in posts that is in violation of the site rules) It is no reason to tell the moderators they are not doing their jobs. Especially since their jobs are not made up by them as they go. They are (at least in my experience as a mod on another site) told exactly what is expected of them and what their limits are as far as what they can do.

If you have a problem with the way things are done, post so in the feedback forum or contact the administrator. Don't bash the mods and claim they aren't doing their jobs. Not only is this immature, but it accomplishes nothing. If it weren't for them, this forum would be a much less pleasant place to visit.

I may not agree with everything, (e.g. leaving content in posts that is in violation of the site rules)
That is one aspect of this site that makes it very different from many others, and it is basically integral to the BOI. If we deleted all those posts where people became abusive (as an example), then we would be doing them a favor by hiding that side of them. By leaving those posts, we enable the viewer's to see what they may encounter if they deal with that person.

From a moderation perspective it makes things easy, and difficult.
Easy, in that we have not messing with the posts as our baseline; difficult in that some flames burn as long as there is fuel...eliminating the problem would sometimes be as easy as removing the inflammatory post(s).

I've had my posts removed from other sites - once for calling out a mod on his response to somebody  - and I was never happy about it; so, overall, I'm happy with that policy. Sure, we could maintain that on the BOI, and edit things in the discussion areas and classifieds, but why do that? While it might eliminate some problems, we'd still be doing our members a disservice

Thanks for posting this Harald...must have been a long time coming! I think this thread should be a sticky for easy, quick future reference for those who undoubtedly will be complaining about the mods not doing their jobs, or the inevitable BG thread blaming Fauna for allowing scammers to operate here.

I say keep up the good work, Mods.

May I share a theory on why you hear stuff like the posts in that BOI thread? I don't know that there's anything to do about it, but I think it's connected to the shift in how we view "membership". Everything from the way we are marketed online, in commercials and the grocery store to even churches gives people the idea that what membership means most fundamentally that the member is to benefit from the community as opposed to the member pulling their own weight and benefiting the community. It's two opposite ideas and it's apparent which view a member holds when they post.

I had a post I specifically directed to a moderator on another forum deleted. Another mod pm'd me saying my post was antagonistic and he told me to come to fauna & post in the BOI instead. All I'd asked was where was my "prompt" delivery & why he was ignoring me since he'd already gotten my "prompt" payment? Antagonistic....never!

It was directed toward the mod about a product I bought from him that he wouldn't send and would not answer my emails or phone calls. I felt it was my only option to get in touch with him. I posted the question on their forum that said you could tell about your buying experience, good or bad. They didn't honor their own rules. I settled it through PayPal.

I am very glad the mod. that pm'd me told me to come here. I didn't know about this great site before then and since I got my problem resolved I found no need to hash it out on the BOI here.

What I am trying to say is that I love the way the mods here do their job & the very easy to follow rules they have set forth. This site is by far the the best out there. Our BOI on here allows for all sides to be heard & not just if it doesn't hurt someone's buddy of a buddy's feelings.

But if I wanted you to edit my post and then delete it and then ban me would you? LOL.......

I tell people just act with respect and then do not even worry about who are MODS and who are not.

Fauna has been around a long time for a reason.
