PLEASE NOTE: In no instance will this site ask you for this sort of information.     In short, DON'T! Email notices are to ONLY alert you of a reply to your private message or your ad on this site. Replying to the email just wastes your time as it goes NOWHERE, and probably pisses off the person you thought you replied to when they think you just ignored them. So instead of complaining to me about your messages not being replied to from this site via email, please READ that email notice that plainly states what you need to do in order to reply to who you are trying to converse with.

Ackie or Timor Monitor???

Hey guys so i'm looking to get either a pair of ackie or a pair of timors later on down the road whenever my blackthroat decides to outgrow the custom cage I built for him. I just wanna hear some feedback on peoples own personal backgrounds with these monitor species and kinda like the pro's and con's for each of them. Done some good research on both of them but nothing beats that like good old fashion personal experience. So the dimensions for my cage that my blackthroat is in are 7'L x 2'1/2"H x 2'1/2" W and thats the cage I would like to put those guys in but I just need to decide on which. But i really appreciate any and everyone's responses and hope to hear some good feedback.
 
Ive had both timor's and ackies. Timor's are shy and chances are you will rarely see them in their enclosure. They are skittish and with never be completely tame. Ackies are one of the best monitors ive ever had. They are inquistive always out for food, and with a little handling can rival the bearded dragon. I would without question recommend an ackie over a timor. However i have seen a few video's with "tame" timors but the sources are questionable....
 
Ya I was just at the Pomona show didn't see too many ackie's but a ton of timor monitors. I def am gonna get the ackie's and i got in touch with a small breeder of them so later on i can purchase. but the only thing is to answer your question it would have just about 10 inches to work with which is a little on the shorter side but i think the sheer size of the cage and how densely filled with hides and fake plants they will do well.
 
yaa with my black throat i can keep them around 115 on the basking site and another smaller light in the middle and that stays around 90ish and then by the water bowl and the cool side it is around 75-80 so it works for now
 
Well then it looks like i will just need to switch that out with a 150 power sun and up my digital thermostat.. But thanx a lot on that advice for both those reptiles I really appreciate it
 
It would be better to use 3-4 40W-60W flood lamps placed near each other than to use one 160W bulb. You'll still get the 140+ temperatures that you need but the spot will be larger, allowing the entire group of monitors to bask at the same time without having to dogpile in an attempt to steal heat from one-another.

Ok thank you for those links I was able to print them out for study material later. but ya i had read about that in a different forum to have that kind of ratio so the basking spot is larger for them. But ya I will probably put two more ceramic fixtures in a sort of triangle shape and use tht when I do get my ackies.

Yeah thats what I plan on doing. I just cranked up the thermostat a little bit and just the 150W red bulb I got with my blackthroat hit 145F for the basking site and it covered about a 2 foot circular radius so I am not worried about the heat issue. I just keep getting responses about the substrate depth issue and I already had the glass sliding doors custom cut to fit my specific measurements. So what i figured I would do is just get there to be around the 10 inches in the front of the cage and put a lot more towards the back and make it like 16in for them but we will see.
 
The substrate issue has never really been a problem for me when it comes to monitors. Sure it would be great to have 2+ feet of substrate for your monitor to burrow, but if you incorporate a lot of tight fitting intricate hiding places, i think he'll be fine. I use retes stacks for my ackies monitor and he spends most of his time crawling up and down them all day, it also helps with thermoregulation when you stack them under the basking area.
 
Right on man that sounds like a good idea thanx. And yeah i didn't think it was going to be much of an issue because i'm going to deck the cage out with a lot of fake plants and hide holes across the cage.
