In short, DON'T! Email notices are to ONLY alert you of a reply to your private message or your ad on this site. Replying to the email just wastes your time as it goes NOWHERE, and probably pisses off the person you thought you replied to when they think you just ignored them. So instead of complaining to me about your messages not being replied to from this site via email, please READ that email notice that plainly states what you need to do in order to reply to who you are trying to converse with.

Yeah, I know. They are a pain in the butt. But they pay the bills to keep my server running. Just a fact of life, I am afraid.

Want to get rid of them? Simple. Just become a Contributor level member or above and they will be gone. -> Please click HERE."

Is that too much for me to ask of you to keep this site running? Well, sorry about that. I too wish I could get everything for free. But alas.....

Google Adsense ad revenue for December, 2025 was just $30 over the cost of the lease for the server running this site. So, in effect, the money providing the incentive for me to continue running this site is coming SOLELY from the paid memberships and sponsorships here. Which honestly ain't much....

I wasn't sure what section to post this in, so if it's wrong I apologize in advance. I just want to get my story out there to warn other people.

Overall, in the past, I've had good experiences with buying and rehoming snakes on Craigslist. This time around I was too trusting when rehoming a baby albino het anery female boa. Orginally I had asked 150 for her, but a guy reached out to me that had me convinced she would be in good hands-so I let her go for $75.

Thursday 5/16/13 I drove from South Fallsburg NY to Boonton NJ to meet and exchange.

Now, I browse various Craigslist localities daily looking to see what's on there. Imagine my shock when I logged on later that night and saw her relisted..FOR $250!! I tried texting the fellow, no answer. So in a rage, I posted a reply to the ad on Craigslist (All the drama can be seen under North Jersey pets). He claimed he was moving and desperate for money. Boy, did I feel like a fool.

He took down his ad and reposted another one the following day. This time it was a pic of her and another breeder's pic (dumbass left the logo in the picture). Now he wants $300. I posted another reply.

Since that, others reached out to me via email that they fell for the same shit from this guy. One in particular-Greg from Easton Pa (ball breeder) has been phenomenal in trying to help me get my snake back.

Greg has been texting him all day. First he got him to agree on 125. Then he changed his mind and wanted 175. Then he said he would trade her for 2 ounces of pot!!!!! You can't make this up!!! The pics he sent of her to Greg show her in a box. He literally admitted to Greg that she's been in a taped up cardboard box since Thursday with no heat! Greg is still working furiously to help me and I can't thank this stranger enough.

This is the info I have on him-his name is Stephen Braithwaite and also posts ads under the name Mallory. He puts his location as Long Valley, Warren County, Flanders, and Morris County. His number is 908-963-3151. Again, if you go onto North Jersey Craigslist-pets, you can see the drama since Thursday unfold.

Today I went on to check and he has her reposted again AS A SUNGLOW!

I am so worried that this beautiful girl is going to end up dead. If anyone can help get her back, I'd be forever grateful. Greg and I are so close to getting this done, but we're short on the funds he's asking and I wouldn't be able to pay anyone back until mid week.

I just pray that someone good takes her off of his hands. This isn't right. Even if it doesn't work out in my favor-if this posting helps prevent this jerk from doing this in the future, then at least that was accomplished. I really wish there was some legal recourse for this. Ugh.

Lucille-to answer your questions:

Not a flipper in the least. I bought the snake a few months ago from JPC Boas. Rehomed due to circumstances that happened. I bought her for $200 and let her go for $75. Not flipping whatsoever.

Ad 1 from today that he posted:

The directly above it, Ad 2 the sunglow ad:

Ad posted on 5/18:

Yes I bought most of my small collection from sellers on Craigslist and recently rehomed most of them through the same route and through local reptile groups on facebook.

Yes, I just notified him of this via text.

To try to help you with posting text messages, I use a program called AirDroid. It's for android phones and lets you control your phone from a web interface on your computer. You can use it to pull up your messaging app and then do a simple copy/paste to a text file or directly to here. It's free.

Hope that helps. The flipping thing is infuriating, but the lack of proper care for the animals and the false advertising on the genetics is criminal, and needs to be stopped. Good luck!

I agree, but I also understand that I have no control what someone does once a sale is complete. I was mad at the flipping to begin with, but when I heard that how he was keeping this girl, I'm livid. I really thought she was going to a good home. I even drove her over 80 miles to drop her off to him for the $75.

At this point, I want to give him his money back and have her returned to me before she ends up dead. Or someone else intervene that can provide her with proper care.

Have you considered reporting it as animal cruelty?

If I had a firm idea of where he was located, I would start making calls. Originally, he told me Long Valley NJ. He told the guy Greg that was texting him today that he's in Hackettstown. His ads claim Morris or Warren County. One says Flanders, NJ.

Well, the cops may be able to track him down from his cell phone. I'd give them a quick call, explain the entire situation, provide them with the email proof that it's being kept in a cardboard box, and see if they can do anything about it. You might want to have some material on hand to explain how they're supposed to be kept. Try making comparisons to ways that someone would mistreat a cat or a kitten by keeping it locked in a cold garage or something like that.

So you buy and sell on Craigslist, but don't flip.
Here's what I think to be a fairly widely accepted definition of a "flipper":
http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=Pet flipper
Pet flipper

A person or persons/entity that acquires a pet(s) for the sole purpose of selling them for more than they paid. They don't normally put much time, effort, energy or money into caring for the animal. And indeed, don't usually have the animal long enough to get to know it's personality, character, ect. There is normally no bonding with the animal. There will only be maybe one picture of said animal, taken for advertising purposes.
This certainly appears to pertain much more to the buyer than to the OP. I don't keep up with morph pricing, but $75 doesn't seem like it would have left room for profiting on an albino het. anery. The buyer obviously provided no quarantine period, or even a chance for the animal to acclimate before trying to turn a profit on it. He couldn't possibly know if it's completely healthy in a single day. For anyone in this area who doesn't like the idea that they could sell a snake to someone who'd turn around and list it the next day; or that they may be buying a possibly sick snake that the seller truly knows nothing about, this thread has value.

Or, are you trying to put forth a much broader definition? Is it flipping, to simply sell an animal that one didn't actually produce themselves? How long does one need to be in possession of an animal before selling it is no longer considered flipping? Is the fact that the transaction took place on CL the ultimate determining factor in whether or not to consider someone a flipper? I've previously sold on CL for sub-market prices. Am I a flipper? To some, it may be preferable to deal locally, and avoid the inherent inconvenience and risks of shipping.

My point is, I'm not seeing any reason to jump on the OP. As CL allows for animal "rehoming", and the OP accepted less than market value for her animal, I don't even think that the case could be made that she was in violation of CL rules. Unless it comes out that the OP is lying about ever having sold the snake to him; or about how much he paid, it seems pretty clear to me which party is deserving of negative attention. Especially if there's any truth to how the buyer is allegedly housing the snake.

So someone just forwarded this to me through the ad I posted in retaliation. He answered this person. Read below:

I e-mailed him saying " Give the man his snake back" ( sorry I didn't know your gender) and his reply was "It is a woman not a man, and she is a crazy stalker. Believe nothing she says" .. How else would he have known your gender?

Now that's funny. What kind of crackhead says give me the snake back and I'll refund the 75? UGH. So upset over this. Never again will I post an animal on CL. Thank you though for going out of your way, I appreciate that.

Unless you can provide the person's full name, you can't use their words on the BOI. 3rd party anonymous quotes aren't allowed. Do you have any emails or anything else that would prove your version of the timeline? Anything to show when the snake was delivered, that we could compare to when he posted the ads?

So, let's say, in a perfect world, you got the snake back and refunded the 75.00 (or not). Then what are you going to do with it?

I'll find a way. I just can't let this go on with her in that condition. I'd rather be behind on my bills and license suspended than her suffering like this.

I've tried a couple of apps that are supposed to backup SMS to email and I'm still trying to get it to work.

Kristina,
I can understand that you are upset; but you should review the rules for posting on the BOI before making another post.

Not relisting her or another animal on CL, that's for sure. I don't know to be honest given the situation I'm in financially-which is kind of why I'm hoping someone in a better position than myself will step in and take her off his hands.

My apologies. I have sent links to those contacting me through email via the Craigslist posts to come on here and speak on their own behalf.
