In short, DON'T! Email notices are to ONLY alert you of a reply to your private message or your ad on this site. Replying to the email just wastes your time as it goes NOWHERE, and probably pisses off the person you thought you replied to when they think you just ignored them. So instead of complaining to me about your messages not being replied to from this site via email, please READ that email notice that plainly states what you need to do in order to reply to who you are trying to converse with.

Yeah, I know. They are a pain in the butt. But they pay the bills to keep my server running. Just a fact of life, I am afraid.

Want to get rid of them? Simple. Just become a Contributor level member or above and they will be gone. -> Please click HERE."

Is that too much for me to ask of you to keep this site running? Well, sorry about that. I too wish I could get everything for free. But alas.....

Google Adsense ad revenue for December, 2025 was just $30 over the cost of the lease for the server running this site. So, in effect, the money providing the incentive for me to continue running this site is coming SOLELY from the paid memberships and sponsorships here. Which honestly ain't much....

Help: Brazilian Rainbow Boa Set-Up?

Each is different re shedding but most will blue up some and may depend on when you notice as to how much blue you see.

Hopper with eyes closed would be a fuzzy IMO. I think you could easily go larger, how big is your BRB?

Gabe, rainbows' eyes will cloud over during shed, but it happens well after their belly goes pink.

As for stools, I have found they vary hugely by snake. Some animals go after every meal, some after every third meal. In addition, smaller meal sizes mean less garbage to pass; many times rat pinks are all (or almost all) used up by the snake with nothing left over. Meals with more fur especially produces more waste.

Size prey to be as big around as the snake is at his/her widest point.

Good luck!

Sorry it took so long to respond, I ended up letting my brb ride out to see if he was shedding or not, then saw his skin was milky/wrinkly. So i left him alone for 2 days, then came back to check up on him and found his shed!

Picking up a hopper today so he can eat, I didn't want to feed him yesterday because he was shedding.
As for size, he's about 24-26" and 32.6g, largest part of his body is about 6/8ths of an inch.

thanks! Puts me at ease for now. I'll bump up his hopper size today and see if he has any stools in his next fecal. He is growing pretty rapidly length wise, weight he's gained about 10g's in a full month.

Just wanted to update this thread and say my BRB is doing great. Eats like a champ and has never missed a feeding day!

I also switched his substrate up and i'm currently using paper towels (MUCH BETTER!)

Also, Do I need a water bowl big enough for him to swim in? I bought him a new rock hide so with his new hide and big rock bowl I don't have anymore room for a moist hide. This might be a stupid question but should I bump his bin size up? He's currently in a 12QT or 15QT (forgot, but it's about the size of a size U.S. 12 shoebox) Sterlite tub.

The snake is about 36" according to his last shed and he's on pre-killed medium // large hopper mice. I haven't weighed him in awhile (just fed him today so I didn't want to disturb him again)

Another question I have is can I switch his diet up to rat pups? If so how long can he stay on rat pups until the next rat size? SnakeSitter actually already answered this in an earlier post, but I'd like to hear different opinions since i'm brining it back up. I know rats are a lot more healthier nutrition wise so I'm all for the diet change.

Also my BRB seems fairly dark almost brown, Not sure if he's going to lighten up or produce some dark reds but will he eventually start changing? Mind you these pics are taken with a flash, so he seems a tid bit lighter brown and the photos were not edited aswell. The breeder I bought him from showed me the dad and mom, dad was a dark red and mom was a light orangeish brown.

He should have a water bowl large enough to soak in.

If you can't fit a moist hide, replace the regular hide with it or upgrade the enclosure size. Moist hides are essential with this species.

Rat pups are bigger than mouse hoppers. A rat pink, a larger one if you like, would be more equivalent.

Brazilians can take between 18 and 30 months to develop their adult colors. With parents at those extremes, you could get anything!

Good luck,

Thanks for the help again Snakesitter! You covered all the questions I asked too so I appreciate that.

I figured that with the moist hide. He's growing pretty fast so I'll upgrade his tub size. But for now I'll use the original set up I had.

I'll try the rat pink out aswell next week. So a rat pinky is more nutritional than a mouse hopper? Should I just switch my brb over to rat pinks until he's big enough to take down a rat pup?

Thanks again for all the help!

-Gabe

Glad to help.

I've seen keepers express a slight preference for either rats or mice, but in my eyes there is not a big enough difference to force me to one or the other. I use rats, but only because by the time a Brazilian is full grown, it will require either four to six mice or one rat, and I'd rather get my feedings done in one round.

Good luck!

IMO a mouse fuzzy would be the better choice for digestion. An "older" animal will be a more complete meal with fur. Without the fur the stools will be loose and messy. Yes, you will want him on rats eventually but in the short term I believe mice are a better meal, at least until taking large enough meals to switch over to a rat with fur.

You have a valid point re fur...however, other than stools, I've never noticed a health/growth difference, and the longer an animal is on mice the more difficult it can be to switch (not common, but it happens, especially as these boas really do seem to prefer mice given the choice....).
