CAPTIVE BORN REPTILES (captivebornreptiles.com)
I saw the place open up recently and swung in to check out the place and support a fellow herper. Now even though the owner's stock of Burmese Pythons and Reticulated Pythons were poorly kept (absolutely filthy cages and several of them clearly had medical issues) the real issue was what came out of this person's mouth.
First off, the thing that made absolutely zero sense at all, the owner blames the "downfall" of the reptile industry on homosexuals! WTF?!?!?! That was a new one. Ohio fish and wildlife are all gay people and only enforce reptile laws on heterosexual people. The nerve of them!?!? And "downfall"? Yes, there are fights that need fighting right now (important fights), but the reptile hobby is a $1.1 BILLION industry annually in the United States.
Secondly, this person was going on and on about being targeted, especially for animals that weren't his. For instance, his daughter had 4 Blanding's turtles (threatened in Ohio). A Wildlife officer asked if the turtles were his and he said, "no, they are my daughters" so the wildlife officer replied, "well we're just going to call them yours". On the surface, seems like a legitimate gripe right? Until he continues that his daughter is 12! So I say, "Well, those are your responsibility man. Your daughter is a minor, you have to take responsibility!" He responded about minors being able to own animals because of 4H rules. Dude, you're an adult, take responsibility for your actions! He says, "So you're telling me that if my daughter goes and picks up an illegal animal and brings it into my house, I'm responsible and can get cited?"
ME: Um, YES! that's exactly what I'm saying.
Him: That's retarded. You're wrong. That's retarded (he would continue to say this several times).
Maybe I'm an idiot, but this guy is a problem. Needless to say, we shared a few unfriendly words and I left. Now, he does have the right to say whatever he wants and blame whatever he wants on whatever he wants. But YOU have the right to never make a purchase from this business. I would never support an ignorant bigot who fails to take any responsibility for his own actions. He is the kind of person who casts a bad shadow over the reptile hobby and the more people like him who are out of the hobby, the better.
Let's not forget that his snakes were unhealthy and that his husbandry was exceptionally poor.
ONE Positive: He did have an associate there who was very kind and very well spoken and I enjoyed some of the conversation with him.
