In short, DON'T! Email notices are to ONLY alert you of a reply to your private message or your ad on this site. Replying to the email just wastes your time as it goes NOWHERE, and probably pisses off the person you thought you replied to when they think you just ignored them. So instead of complaining to me about your messages not being replied to from this site via email, please READ that email notice that plainly states what you need to do in order to reply to who you are trying to converse with.

Yeah, I know. They are a pain in the butt. But they pay the bills to keep my server running. Just a fact of life, I am afraid.

Want to get rid of them? Simple. Just become a Contributor level member or above and they will be gone. -> Please click HERE."

Is that too much for me to ask of you to keep this site running? Well, sorry about that. I too wish I could get everything for free. But alas.....

    =====================

Google Adsense ad revenue for December, 2025 was just $30 over the cost of the lease for the server running this site. So, in effect, the money providing the incentive for me to continue running this site is coming SOLELY from the paid memberships and sponsorships here. Which honestly ain't much....

What's the deal with this auction and reptile ring

Are you setting a time frame? I will use it when I have babies on the ground this year, but it will be a few months.

Well, this section has been here now for almost 4 YEARS. How much time do you think is needed to prove it has flopped or not? Quite honestly, I had no idea it has been here for that long. But I can keep it here a bit longer if I get SOME sign that it has a future here. It doesn't cost me anything to do nothing.

Too much debate in there about reserves. Take it out back and stop the suffering.

Would it be possible to "auction" something from the classified pages? Seems like it would get a lot more traffic in there.

Possibly. Should be at least worth discussing.

I just don't see this ever working no matter how you do it. You have to ask yourself what would entice someone to want to auction their animal? Is there any advantage to auction? It just isn't there if you ask me. It seems the only good reason to auction is to move inventory fast and likely well under what they are worth. Would we even want that here? Most here at Fauna are just normal people breeding as a part of their hobby.

The auction section was restarted because there was a small resurgence of interest in autions here....the problem being, at the time, that registered members were blocked from posting replies in the classifieds. That created a situation where sellers were posting PM and email bids; which naturally led to suspicion. (I'm not saying all sellers were taking advantage of the system to simply bump the prices...but some most definitely were.)
Now that the restriction has been lifted, it should be doable...but there would still be the issue of seller attempts at auctioneering, which basically amounts to ad bumping.

The person that started this thread had expressed an interest in putting some effort into the existing auction section - which, IMO, is a better option than auctions in the regular classifieds. As I remember, her ideas were focused on building interest in auctions & getting people involved. What she proposed made sense, as long as somebody wanted to put the effort into it. It was disappointing that she never returned to the discussion.

That I agree with, but honestly I can't really think of any other way to promote it, except for sellers actually using it.

Yeah, last call on this auction section. Unless this section picks up SUBSTANTIALLY by the end of this month (July) I will be removing it. At least it will be removed as soon as I think about checking on it again after that deadline.

I don't see any sense having it take up screen real estate with what little use it has gotten since being set up.

This is one of the main reasons I am reluctant to set up something new on this site even when suggested by one or more members. It seldom proves to be worthwhile the effort of setting it up. :shrug01:

Even with it being moved to a better location, a lot of people never notice it (largely because of their browsing habits). If sellers aren't posting auctions, the buyers won't find them...and if people aren't bidding, there isn't much reason for the sellers to post there.
Promoting the auction section would be simple enough...but it would require more than a passing interest and a few minutes of time each week to get it active.

If the Auction Section of the site goes down, would auctions be allowed within the regular Classifieds Section? Only reason I ask is that I like to use the auction section, but won't really have much to offer till at the end of the month, at the earliest.

I don't see any reason why they would not be allowed - part of the problem before was that registered members weren't able to post responses in the classifieds. Sellers would post the "current high bid" and many people were less than trusting of the process.
The problem with auctions in the main classifieds is that people tend to want to play auctioneer; and all those posts intended to keep the auction visible & encourage bids are nothing but posted bumps (which are, of course, specifically disallowed)

I suspect that with the lack of interest in this section, it going away is pretty much a done deal. But if anyone wants to surprise me, be my guest.

As for auctions being allowed in the classifieds section, well it depends. If it seems that the auctions are pissing off everyone else just trying to post classifieds and PAYING for the membership perk of bumping their ads, then this site will just have to live without auctions completely.

This section was intended to try to sidestep the messiness that auctions would likely generate in a combined setting with straight classified ads. And the fact that they just weren't possible to run with the modifications done to the classified sections to try to curtail the rampant bumping going on at the time. Heck, to be honest, I really don't know how much of those mods mentioned are still in effect right now. If I would have to pay my programmer to REMOVE the code to allow auctions to take place there, then that is just not going to happen.

THIS section was implemented in order to show me whether or not auctions would fly on this site at all. Currently, that answer appears to be a resounding "NO". The membership is telling me that auctions aren't wanted, much less needed on this site.

As an aside, I also have a personal interest in seeing if auctions would work here since one of these days I'm sure I am going to want to liquidate my herp library. Since I have no idea of what all those books are worth, an auction environment seemed the most practical way to address this. Guess I'll have to use some other sort of avenue when that time comes.
