In short, DON'T! Email notices are to ONLY alert you of a reply to your private message or your ad on this site. Replying to the email just wastes your time as it goes NOWHERE, and probably pisses off the person you thought you replied to when they think you just ignored them. So instead of complaining to me about your messages not being replied to from this site via email, please READ that email notice that plainly states what you need to do in order to reply to who you are trying to converse with.

Yeah, I know. They are a pain in the butt. But they pay the bills to keep my server running. Just a fact of life, I am afraid.

Want to get rid of them? Simple. Just become a Contributor level member or above and they will be gone. -> Please click HERE."

Is that too much for me to ask of you to keep this site running? Well, sorry about that. I too wish I could get everything for free. But alas.....

    =====================

Google Adsense ad revenue for December, 2025 was just $30 over the cost of the lease for the server running this site. So, in effect, the money providing the incentive for me to continue running this site is coming SOLELY from the paid memberships and sponsorships here. Which honestly ain't much....

The BOI will be coming to an end on 02-02-2020

There was a lot of discussion about this back in 2009 in those threads I mentioned in post #11. Basically I bent over backwards to offer free temporary access to people placed in that situation. And at one point I even offered a 10 year membership level for $10. Seems fair, no? Complete waste of my time and energy. So no, I am not doing that again.

The lowest level membership cost here to gain access to the Board of Inquiry after 02-02-2019 is $25 per year. So let me get this straight. Instead of just paying the $25 to help out this site, they would want ME to jump through hoops for them? Do I have that right? I fell for that last time. :ballkick:

Money has been tight for me because of my life going sideways. But I'm prepared to pay another $25 for a year to be able to participate in the BoI.

Mandi, Thank You for your support, it's greatly appreciated!

Big Time Reptiles

Yeah, once I have more than 12 bucks in my account. The BOI has been a great education for me in dealing with the reptile community, and a few members have been really nice in helping me out with some personal stuff. I'm glad to support this site.

I enjoy reading the BOI and spend more time on it then the rest of the site. I would hate to see it go. I understand the pay to play part of this. However, my concern is with restriction to access to the BOI comes restriction of content being brought to the BOI. Regardless of what happens I support whatever you decided to do with this Rich, as none of this would be possible without you.

How do I pay for someone else to be a contributer subscription? I would like to gift a few subscriptions.

That is very thoughtful! That sort of thing has to be done all manually. You would need to pay via PayPal directly to "[email protected]", making a note in the payment concerning who it is for, and then Rich would have to enter the info manually to set it up.

Hi Chris,
That is very nice of you to offer. Members do this more often than one might realize, so good on you. I would Private Message Rich (Webslave) directly for this one.
Thanks!

Yes, this could likely influence the continued existence of the BOI. And this was actually expressed back in 2005 when I originally felt that something like this was needed in order to keep the BOI alive. But honestly, I don't think it will change the direction it is headed in any. As you will see later in this post.

http://www.faunaclassifieds.com/forums/showthread.php?t=63362

Coincidentally enough, that thread was initiated also on February 02.

That turned out to become a failure and in order to save the BOI, I rescinded it. Yes, the Board of Inquiry forum just dried up from lack of use, and at that time I really did want it to survive, regardless of the lack of support I was seeing. Honestly, I just chose to ignore the truth then that the membership really didn't want to support the BOI THAT much back then. So obviously I have kept the blinders on for all this time afterwards.

Then in 2009 another crisis time, at least in my opinion. And that too came to nothing if we look at things today. No, I don't want to have one of these warning flag waving announcements every few years proclaiming what I would hope should be obvious to people that the BOI cannot survive without substantial support. I have mentioned before about my needing to feel that I have the majority of people in this hobby/industry/community at my back when I have to face down one threat of a lawsuit after another over what someone else has posted on this site. But what sort of idiot would actually launch a lawsuit against this site seeing that there were visible signs (paid memberships, sponsorships, advertisers) of overwhelming support, both financial and public opinion, to defend it? That is the strength that the BOI needs to exist. THAT is the strength that is now lacking.

So the obvious lacking of overwhelming support is now going to be the end of the BOI. Period. Obviously 17 years hasn't proven to the majority of people in this field that the BOI is worth supporting. In my opinion, no longer amount of time nor a greater number of new members are going to accomplish that goal at this late date. 139,000 members should be quite enough for anyone to tell the story that I have known in my bones for quite a while now.

So it comes to this, finally.

On 02-02-2019 the BOI will be closed to all but financially contributing members. On 02-02-2020 the BOI will be closed to everyone. I really seriously do not expect this "pay to play" period to accomplish anything. But I feel I at least owe it to the current contributing members to give them this extra year. Their intent may have been to actively and directly support the BOI. So I owe them this. But please do not expect that your contributions made after 02-02-2019 are going to extend the final deadline any further. I am certainly not going to commit to that at all.

You all can't say I haven't warned you about this coming. I've known in my bones that this was coming, but kept hoping I was wrong. That things will start turning around any day now. That first warning was 14 years ago. Then again 9 years ago. Sorry, but I am done with the warnings. They didn't work anyway then, so one now won't work neither.

Now, before anyone asks, no, I am not stupid. If I things turn around substantially, and I do mean SUBSTANTIALLY, and I feel that the support that has dwindled away to almost nothing has come back in spades, then yes, I will reconsider. But honestly, I do not think that will happen. Too many people have left this site completely over the past few years, for one reason or another, with the BOI intact and running, so I don't foresee the permanent end of it being any influence whatsoever to bringing them back.

Honestly it both depresses me and relieves me that this day has finally made it onto the calendar. Running the BOI has been damned HARD. And Lord only knows how stressful I have made life for Connie just because something here got under my skin and leaked out into her life through no fault of her own.

Someone else asked, but it was not answered. Would you be willing to let someone else take it over?

Not sure how logistically that would work. Possibly just providing a link here that directs you to the new location of the BOI, but keep all the old posts still here.

Sad times but totally understandable and not a surprise in reality.
Good luck with the future here Rich and I will continue my limited support as long as you need it.

BTW, I fully expect people who can no longer access the BOI to start posting BOI type posts elsewhere on this site. They will be deleted immediately upon discovery and infractions assessed. That includes in the classifieds sections with ads others will place there.

I haven't decided whether or not this will include the BOI forums for Canadians and other international concerns, as well as the other animal groups. They have not as of yet been a demonstrable source of potential liability for me. But if they begin to be utilized inappropriately, then they too will be shut down to all but contributing level members. I may have to do that anyway, just to prevent confusion, both real and contrived.

Probably would be confusing to a lot of people especially new members. Makes more sense to do all or none.

Will this include those people who sponsor certain groups (IE: the boa classifieds)?

Yes. I have already set up the sponsors to have access to the BOI after 02-02-2019. You may have noted that I also have provided them with their own medallion identifying them as a sponsor, in preparation to this change.

I think from a classifieds view its an easier way to weed out low end scammers by charging them at least the monthly fee to post ads in the classifieds portion of the site and will make members actually pay attention to the rules of posting such ads.

I don't quite see the point in limiting at least view to the BOI threads but I'm also not behind the scenes.
You're right in saying that there's a lot of new Facebook groups popping up for it however they're all new and that's in issue in itself. Scammers often change their names and I find more about that on here than I'm going to find on a year old Facebook groups.
