• In the past two days I have gotten emails asking about being requested to provide credit card info in order to register and also to make a post in the classifieds forums. PLEASE NOTE: In no instance will this site ask you for this sort of information. The only time any request for payment is made is if you choose to opt-in for a higher membership level, and that is done SOLELY through PayPal. Anything else is coming from a source other than this site. My guess is that this is coming through Google Adsense, but when I can get someone to send me a screen shot of this sort of request, I will know more.

    In short, DON'T! Email notices are to ONLY alert you of a reply to your private message or your ad on this site. Replying to the email just wastes your time as it goes NOWHERE, and probably pisses off the person you thought you replied to when they think you just ignored them. So instead of complaining to me about your messages not being replied to from this site via email, please READ that email notice that plainly states what you need to do in order to reply to who you are trying to converse with.

Salmonella Infections and Hospitalizations from Bearded Dragons

From March 2021 - September 2022 a specific serovar associated only with bearded dragons caused serious infections in two (2) Canada children and twelve (12) U.S. children. Five (5) of the U.S. children required hospitalization. The infected bearded dragons were traced back to a probable single Southeast Asian source of animals imported to the U.S. While this serovar is rare in North America, both the U.S. CDC and the Canadian PHAC will be tracking and monitoring more closely.

Again, while rare, all the cases in this report were children under five (5), and most under age of one (1). Nearly 40% were hospitalized.

For herpers, this is not a good report and has the potential to foment additional regulations concerning bearded dragons and perhaps other lizards and reptiles in general. I would conclude that herpers at reptile shows must exercise great caution allowing children to handle animals. I even see mothers with babies handling animals. It would be reasonable and logical for herpers to require anyone handling animals to use vendor supplied hand sanitizer after touching any animals. Show owners should perhaps require approaches by vendors to mitigate potential infections. Add to this appropriate cleaning of cages and transport enclosures is a must. Other recommendations ?

And before touching any animals. I assume that a novel serotype could move through captive populations via poor biosafety practices of the sorts that are too common in herp care and vending, including all the touchy feely nonsense at expos.
