Is this a re-hash of the same post a year ago? - comment
If this is the same issue that was put up on the board a year ago, I have a comment that was accurate then - still accurate today. Flame me if you want (I got flamed last time); but when the facts finally came out a year ago, I was right on the money

!
All BP imports carry ticks/mites - period.
The seller should have cleaned them up before selling them - that would have avoided this fiasco -- but maybe he thought he had. Stuff happens.
The buyer took the snake to a vet to get cleaned up - a less than knowledgeable vet with a penchant for the dramatic. The vet sent the little critters to a lab and notified the government. Not because he had identifed the critters as specifically the arthropods which carried heart water disease, but because he (by his own admission) didn't know the difference! Uncle Sam's involved now, investigation, quarantine, big mess.
My stand at the time was that I would switch vets - I wouldn't mind a knowledgeable vet doing the right thing, but if this vet doesn't know the difference and feels that he needs to bring down the strong arm of the government every time he sees a bug HE can't identify....I think he needs to qualify himself to tell the difference or admit that he is unqualified to treat herps. I don't care how much you like him as a person, he should know what he is doing before he goes off the deep end. Think about it - given his modus operandi, he would have the feds called in for EVERY BP import in the US (not to mention a few CB snakes -- we all know they can pick up parasites too).
I was flamed royally last year for suggesting that the real lesson learned here was to select a better qualified vet - one who will know what he is doing before he pulls the pin on the grenade. Turns out, I was right -- the lab he sent the parasites to reported that the critters in question were the everyday sort - no worries, no disease threat. But the pandora's box has already been opened.
If this is the same issue in question back then, and the facts remain as stated, I stand by my original assertion - the vet is an idiot.
