I'm not against the legal taking and the responsible means of taking animals from the wild. But I think there is something morally wrong and really irresponsible with stomping around and taking large quantities of any animal from the wild to sell for a profit or to trade for such things that you simply cant afford. I also think its wrong to support it by purchasing from others who do it.
Is there anyone who would disagree that we put an awful lot of pressure on wildlife already just in general - without the need to collect them for profit or trade - or to disturb their nests and rob their eggs?
That is exactly what has occurred here. Wasn't even denied.
Once upon a time I had a revelation. I was hunting newts for a display tank I built for my daughter. I was thick in a swampy area and I heard a voice behind me. That voice came from that of a park ranger. He asked me to back out the same way I had come in, tracing my steps, step for step. It was then he explained I was within my right to scour for newts and collect a few for my personal purposes. But in that process I had killed a certain plant/moss when I had stepped on it in my quest. I forget how long he told me the stuff took to grow, but I recall it sounded like forever. And that probably it would never bounce back or at least not that I could be able to see in my lifetime. And forget about the list of micro organisms he rattled off that also depended on that stuff and perished under my foot print.
I did a lot of damage that day just for a few free newts. Even though it was my right I couldn't help but to feel so completely irresponsible. No way was I going to try to reconcile that with myself by saying others do it and have done it so why should I feel bad about it. I had to be responsible for me with the knowledge I was armed with.
You want to make excuses for yourself because it gets you what you want? go right ahead.
