Hey,

If you are so worried about the export of animals, where were when ball python season was here.

Every dealer in America sells WC ball female gravids, and technically gravid females are not supposed to leave ghana.

Is it becuase you have an agenda against Tom specifically, or did all your info come from the Lizard King and you really don't know any other people in the industry.

Also since animals dont know what a border is how do you know that the basins were not over the line? Same thing happens with the B. c.c. Kind of like how many hunters out in western U.S. wit for trohpy elk bulls to wander off Yellowstone, or the elephant hunters in Africa.

And as brd said you have no idea if Tom imported these himself, bough them for resale from Strictly or took them in on trade from me.

I've spoken to Tom on several occasions, and find him to be a wealth of information. Just out of curiosity, when he got locked up, how many others were implicated? How many others did the time he did? Has anyone ever stopped to think about this? Who else was convicted, and why or why not?

Tom Crutchfield introduced animals into our hobby which have since become a staple for most hobbyists and private breeders. There's no longer the pressure on wild populations, and we all have the animals we want to work with. It may suck to think about, but each and every one of us have fruit from the poison tree of smuggling.

Well, if no one should sell a wc basin ever, then we wouldn't have the cbb that a few people are now working with. So I guess you should never getany becuase then you would be guilty of supporting wc trade at some point

I guess then we should just leave them in the wild to be destroyed by thier native peoples.


All humans are destructive to thier llocal environment, not just happy fat americans.

At least some of us are trying to breed the animals to eventually stem the need for wild collecting.

In the last 5 years we have alone cut the number of bp's comming from africa in half. We havent even met quota in 3-4 years. And although this is good at some levl, many instead of comming here are eaten, or skinned for leather so they are being killed anyhow.

You're all riled up at us, but look at the industry as bigger picture on the global level, and you'll see that even if a few dozen americans obtain legally or not a couple hundred of a particular animal it usually isnt a biological impact compared to native habitat destruction, and food collection.

But our difference is that we try to replicate these animals where are "Tik-pa" in the forest doesnt.

I have all I need thanks . The point is that we should rely on captive populations to produce and sell. The history is just that, history. Does that mean we should keep repeating it just because it used to happen ? I breed several species of reptile as many do. One of the things that I use to support my hobby to people outside of the trade is that I feel by producing healthy animals in captivity , maybe I can take a little pressure off of wild populations.
Many of our laws are antiquated and need to be updated. Personally I think there should be a much lower limit on the #s of animals that can be imported. Perhaps some sort of lottery that breeders can enter in order to be able to buy the imported animals with the express aim to be to reproduced and make captive offspring available to the public. Who knows ? I have nothing against Tom , I just think considering his history he should stay away from the edge.
I commend you on your efforts to stem the tide of BP destruction. From what I understand , the species suffers more than most in this arena .Just my 2 cents.

Good points, and I agree with them all.

Certian countries do have lottery style systems, and some animal quotas are very low. Others do need fixing.

We should all be responsible stewards of the land, however, that is never going to happen in third world countries. Human need and greed are almost one in the same in some areas of the world. And it is easy for us happy fat americans who think being on a budget means watching the cell phone minutes and taking our lunch to work is very different then someone in the congo that has never even seen a doctor, dentist, electricity, or regular meals. And it is very hippocritical for us to say we need to protect this or that parcel of land for a particular animal, while we are here burning up the fuel for A/C, driving all over the place, and using so many plastics that will never rot and created a ton of toxins in the process.

You guys can come on here and say that you disagree with Tom's decision to get some of the animals he has in the past, but that no way makes him a crook or a scumbag. He has produced well over a 100 different species, and his farm and care are a testiment of his love for the animals. His operation is not a regular wholesale operation where there are piles of emaciated animals in cattle troughs. If you ever visit his place is the cleanest wholesalers place I have seen. And I have been all over south florida for years.

His efforts have moved herpetoculture forward for the hobbyist, and serious breeder alike.

I just want to add something about Crutchfield... I almost bought from him a gorgeous, perfect Aru green tree python, but in the end I didn't because he very stubbornly would not negotiate a shipping plan to fit my needs, and he put me in such an awkward position that I was totally put off after all the begging I did.... if he treats all his customers like this I don't see how he's still in business.

Yesterday I was down in Miami and the surrounding areas with a friend of mine picking up animals. When we were fininshed we went to Toms place and we were there for several hours. Tom gave us a tour of the entire place although my friend Ben had been there before. I have to tell you, it was the cleanest place I have ever seen and the most professional place. I was very impressed with his set up, his place is by far the nicest anywhere.

While I was at Toms I told him about this person making the remarks about not shipping to her liking. Tom was trying to do everything he could to help her. He even offered to hand deliver the snake to her. He also offered to ship the snake for only $30.00, the snake was $395.00 for a total of $425.00.

Tom was very nice the whole time and also as healpful as he could be.

For all of you newbies out there and others for that matter, Tom may have made mistakes in the past, every one of us makes mistakes. Tom has learned from those mistakes and has become a better person because of it . Tom is by far one of the most knowledgable people in the herp world and is a great asset to the reptile community.

To show everone that he gets attacked unfairly as this person did to him, he sent me all of the emails between the two of them and asked me to post them up here. So now you can be the judge of the whole thing.

THIS PERSON ATTACKED TOM FOR NO REASON AND I THINK SHE OWES HIM AN APPOLOGY.

Tom happens to be one of the nicest guys in the business. Tom is always willing to answer questions people have even if they bought there animals somewhere else. I have asked him many questions over the years myself.

Tom has probably bred more reptile species with success then anyone out there.

I've done this very successfully for over 35 years. I know exactly how to do every part of the business and how to do it well. First you're only 50 minutes from here. Second I explained I could bring it up as I come up twice a week on other business. I DON'T HAVE TIME TO DELIVER A $400 SNAKE AT A SPECIFIC TIME AND PLACE OF YOUR CHOOSING. If I could I would. I invited you here, agreed to hold it at long as it's paid for for you to come at your discretion. I HAVEN'T PUT YOU IN ANY POSITION. You're are making request that are impossible for me to comply with. Thank you for your inquiry. If you think I make it hard to do business why don't you check the website. I'm probably the easiest person to work with on the net or anywhere else. The problem is you don't have a full understanding of shipping policies of freight companies that handle herps plus a plethora of other situations. If I wanted something that was less than an hour away and the guy said he'd hold it until I could come I would do it. Try to buy a car with $50 down and a promise to pay the rest in a week or two...LOL

If all you Tom Crutchfield lovers will go to KS you will notice Tom is selling wild caught Amazon Basin Emeralds. Those are ILLEGAL to import. He managed to find a way around that though.( field collectors took the wild caught Basins across borders to a country that has no restrictions on export of Basins because they are not native. Perhaps Peru?) Someone as knowledgeable as Tom knows this , but still brought them in the country.
One of them has a big scar that he first stated was NOT a scar but just dark pigmentation. After being called out he took that out of his ad. This guy has learned a lot about skirting the law. I have seen recent pictures of him with one of the Nostrands.They are the subject of a book called the LIZARD KING. It's all about the illegal animal trade and its worst offenders. He has not changed his stripes.

I asked Tom about your remarks as well while we were all sitting around having a good time.

Tom bought those snakes at the breeders expo in Daytona from another vendor. One of the rules for being a vendor at that show is that is to be NO WILD CAUGHT REPTILES FOR SALE. Those were captive bred by one of the vendors at the show. I just thought you all might want to know.

Brian , those animals are either wild caught or in bad health . I breed Basins and I have never seen a captive bred , healthy animal that was so scarred and skinny. I'm not sure what would have motivated Tom to buy those , but putting them up for sale in that condition seems like a mistake.
I'm glad to hear he has such a nice facility , and treated you well. Like I said before, I have no problem with Tom , just his history and I guess , sometimes his judgment.

Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, but today..today we live the present. The present is God's gift to all of us. It allows us to reflect on the past and make changes and learn from it, and to wonder what tomorrow may bring.

Judgment? The only judgment I'm worried about is God's. I have a good feeling Tom feels the same way.

Based on Tom's alleged association with the above mentioned person and their combined apparent animosity towards this site and me personally via the attached screen shot and some personal emails from Tom, I seriously doubt that you will ever see Tom Crutchfield post here on the BOI.
