Yeah, I know. They are a pain in the butt. But they pay the bills to keep my server running. Just a fact of life, I am afraid.

Want to get rid of them? Simple. Just become a Contributor level member or above and they will be gone. -> Please click HERE."

Is that too much for me to ask of you to keep this site running? Well, sorry about that. I too wish I could get everything for free. But alas.....

Google Adsense ad revenue for December, 2025 was just $30 over the cost of the lease for the server running this site. So, in effect, the money providing the incentive for me to continue running this site is coming SOLELY from the paid memberships and sponsorships here. Which honestly ain't much....

Reptiles Cause lung problem? EMERGENCY

Sorry to here your diagnosis and decision you are facing in respect to you reptiles. Lately i have been feeling kind of sluggish and having some breathing issues. I'm nt sure if its headed in the same direction. I'v been keeping reptiles for about 5-6 years now, but just a few months ago i' been feeling it get worse. One thing i did notice is that the ban i was giving my superworms was causing the main part of it. I haven't gone to the doc.s yet but will be here shortly. My simptoms are similar to those of assma and or allergies. i know when i was younger just a kid i was old i had assma, but never had any affects to it. my doc told me to run and work my lungs out so that it would not develope. It seemed to work i high school i played sport and ran 1 4:20 mile.

But I was wondering what are your syptoms like. I'm in the same boat I am the only one in the house hold that gets this way. When I get the news and the doc tells me if its assma related or allergies, or anything worse. I will post back and let you know if there maybe be a link.

All blood work is clean. Nothing in it at all. They run that a ton of times.
Radiology reports show fibroids in the lungs. Lung biopsy reported the same but no other answers from it. WE have checked for molds and anything that might be a problem but other than the bird and the blame that the reptiles are getting thats about it. Been diagnosed mostly in the last year. Started having problems 2 years ago and is progressing but not at a fast pace that we can tell. They are comparing a years worth of tests and are retesting in 3 months. NEVER have had pneumonia at all just started having shortness of breath and had mostly thought that was because of heart problems but then 2 years ago had pulmonary docs check me out and this is what we have been fighting since.

Armando, Just having difficulty breathing and walking. Go a few hundred feet then stop have to sit down and rest. Thats why I thought it was the heart situation but it kept getting worse. Now down to 40 feet and have to sit. Yesterday could only do a 4 minute walk with the doc office and had to stop. Oxygen levels drop so have to have oxygen now if moving about. Also have inhaler for worse times. Its just scary and as anyone would do, want answers and just seem to get more questions.

Maybe like you mentioned previously Kathy...the possibility of the few years in the pet store and the exposure to things then. I know that a person can develop skin cancer as far as 20-30 yrs. after sunburns that they got as a child.

Hey everyone,

Some of you may be familiar with me from my previous posts, while others may not, so for those who do not my name is Jason and I am a 4th year veterinary student anticipating graduation this June 2010. I have been speaking with "Polasian" about starting some herp health forums on here and I recently received an email from him concerning this thread, which I find extremely interesting and yet troubling for a number of reasons.

I have a lot of information to provide to Kathy and I also have questions of my own, some of which may be redundant for the sake of clarification, so I would like to apologize ahead of time to all of you for any redundancy that I may cause in pursuing some the answers I seek and more importantly I would like Kathy that I would be more than happy to offer my consult and advise (with the understanding that I am not a currently licensed veterinarian) with the intent of offering you friendly council from the perspective of a veterinarian. Please understand that I WILL NOT be offended you prefer I not get involved given my status as a student, but I want you to know that if you have any questions I would be more than happy to assist you during this difficult time.
I would also like to state that although you are in question of your doctor’s advice (and for good reason) it is critical that you comply with your physician as a priority over the advice of others at this time, until major breakthroughs suggesting otherwise have been made. Right now no one knows what’s wrong and your doctor is the only legal advocate you have who can help you and for this reason, please do not interpret my suggestions as an alternative to the care provided by your doctor, or family physician. This could be disastrous. I merely wish to offer my advice in addition to what you have already been told to help protect the prospective interests of your pets and the relationship that you have established with them.
As a veterinarians, it is our Job to consult with MD’s concerning cases that involve human disease resulting from the presence of pets at home. It would be wise for you to have ALL of your animals examined by a licensed veterinarian for respiratory and infectious diseases and to ask that veterinarian to communicate with your physician as a team to determine the best possible course of action for your health and the interests of your pets. If your clinician refuses to comply, find another clinician. Clinicians are people and medical opinions are still opionions and every clincian has a different opinion. Your job is to find one you think is right. Also please understand that your health is the number one top priority to your physician and your pets are expendable to ensure the quality of your health when faced with a disease to which a cause cannot be identified. This is a bit different from the standpoint of a veterinarian, because we are here to preserve public health (first and foremost) but in addition we are also here to protect animal welfare. MD’s are not shy about telling their patients to abandon their pets, but they do so feeling it is in your best interest without considering the bond between you and your pets, or the possibility of what might happen to your pets if they are released, or what those pets might transfer to people following their release. This is not part of an MD’s training and it is no secret that they lack in their ability to councel in this fashion. There is no right or wrong ansere here, they are merely interested in your health and have not been trained to take the health of animals into account. That is why veterinarians receive calls in the face of disease outbreaks in addition to MD’s.

From what I understand to the best of my ability, the cause of your current condition has not been identified. If the cause is the result of keeping reptiles, from the perspective of your health the best thing to do would be get rid of them. But at the moment we do not have confirmation of this and from the public perspective, we don’t know if your symptoms are being caused by an infectious agent that may spread the second you release those animals to someone else. ANIMALS DO TRANSMIT DISEASES TO HUMANS and I feel this avenue has not been investigated thoroughly enough to recommend abandonment safely. Though keeping the animals you have might be bad for your personal health, you have clearly already been affected by something and releasing animals from your environment to someone else (who would be unaware of these events) without knowing if they asymptomatic disease carriers would be a disaster from the standpoint of public health, unless we know FOR SURE how these animals are impacting your current condition.
Given that we don’t know what going on, suggesting that you abandon all of your pets is extremely premature and is most likely a desperate attempt on behalf of your clinician to identify the cause of your symptoms based on modification of your at home environment and elimination trials. To be fair, that is how we approach this problem clinically. However, there may be an easier way to accomplish this task that will be far more effective for you without suggesting animal abandonment, or threatening public safety until we know it is absolutely necessary. Has your physician placed you into a clean room for an extended period of time? You Should consider this. If your problem is reptiles, your symptoms should resolve, unless the damage is so severe that scaring and fibrosis (permanent lung changes) occur have occured, but at such a time the progression of your symptoms would stop and the clinical signs you have would remain static. We do have ways to assess the extent of damage that has occurred and can this can be determine scientifically. Your condition has been caused by something and we need to find that something. This could be the result of reptiles and I will work on locating some publications for you, but this could also be the result of many other things. Placing you in a clean room for 2 to 4 weeks time with medical management would remove you from your at home environment (simply ridding animals and cleaning is not enough given the severity of your condition). You need to leave your home all together, assuming it is financially Feasible because it could be cleaners used in your home that are causing it, could be mold, could be the brand new carpet you got last year, who knows. First let’s identify the problem as something in your home before we suggest abandonment, because the problem could very well be a pathological process within your body, negligent of your environment. If this is the case, we expect no changes, or possibly expect you to get worse in the confinement of a clean room. Before we suggest drastic changes at home, lets be sure it is something at home that we are dealing with.
I will leave you with this for now, but I will be monitoring this thread and would like to converse with you in private as I have many questions for you (4-5 pages worth) that will help me to become familiar with your current physical status, the health of your animals and your current environment. If you would be interested in my assistance, please send me an email at ([email protected]) with a copy of your email address and I will send you these materials ASAP. Meanwhile, keep your head up! Remember Idiopathic means “we have no clue” and as long as we don’t know there is still hope! Don’t give up!

Kathy,
You mentioned heart problems...I'm not asking for details, but just want you to keep in mind that (depending on what those problems are) your lung condition could quite conceivably be a big factor. Shortness of breath and hypoxia are huge stressors on the heart...and, when the heart starts having issues, it will exacerbate the lung problems (and vice versa).

I agree with hhmoore. The most threatening causes to your immediate health status are those of repiratory and even worse cardiac disease and their are countless ways in which both can manifest. I do agree. Though, other causes (once the top killers have been eliminated as possibilities) that should be considered may also include autoimmune mediated disease, metabilic disease, immune mediated hypersensitivity, infectious agents such as parasites, viruses, bacteria, fungi. Foreign bodies may also be of concern in the face of aspiration pneumonia, and toxins should be considered as well. Interstitial pulmonary edema is not an uncommon symptom of pulmonary toxicity.

Below are some publications concerning allergies to reptiles. I found loads of information on the topic and I will read through some of them later when I return home from the clinic to screen some of the poorly conducted studies and I will provide you with more literature on the topic later.

for now this will get you started and bear in mind I have not yet read these myself.

Kathy-

I can't offer anything here other than my sincere wishes for a fast and complete recover, and my most profound prayers.

I know that I'd be heart-broken if I was told I had to get rid of my beloved pets-regardless of the reason.

I hope the doctors find SOMETHING-ANYTHING-to explain your symptoms-other than your animals!!

You're in my prayers until this ordeal is resolved.

Hugs-
Donna

Thank You so much Donna. Also a big thank You to every one else. A special Thank you to Jason for the work he is doing to see what and if there is some link and what can be done if there is. He is a vet studen of 4 years here in GA and we have been emailing back and forth searching for answers.
I love the Reptile people here and most every where. I am headed to Repticon Atlanta this morning to get the word out on the proposed GA Bill S.303 requiring special license and microchipping. There is no greater folks to be with than You guys. It means alot.

Just don't give up, honey!!

Miracles DO HAPPEN!!

Not much to update. Nothing has come forward to link the reptiles from any where. The Vet student is still working on reviewing my medical history and the questions I answered to him. We will see what comes up on this next. Thank You for asking and as soon as I know more I will certainly let others know as well either way. Thanks,.

At least Olexian Pro is working on it with you!!

I think you did the right thing by sharing this issue here at Fauna.

You've found someone who has access to info from the veterinary point of view, you have LOADS of people trying to figure out an alternative to giving up your scaly kids and maybe finding another explanation for your lung problems, and you're sharing info that may effect ANY of us in the future, especially if it truly IS an allergy or a disease caused by herps or the products used to keep them.

I'm hoping it may be traced back to some product that you've used in the past or something in your home or environment that you didn't even realize was there.

Personally I have MANY allergies-feathers, dog and cat dander and MANY FOODS, along with asthma. None of these problems have gotten so bad that I can't keep any dogs, cats and herps, so I'm thinking it may be a chemical issue for you.

Just know we're all pulling for you, and you're in our prayers!!

Hugs-
Donna

Thanks Donna, that was my intent all along. If it is something others need to be aware of, I wanted them to know. If there was a answer out here, I will search to find it. Also to let others know not to give up with just the first suggestion. Seek the answers where ever they may be found. On here, I beleive, is where there is a vast majority of experts in our field. I too beleive its going to be something other than the reptiles. I beleive maybe past ownership of the petshop with the birds there or something with the cleaning supplies. As I know more, I will post.

Kathy-

How are you doing with the respiratory problems???

I hope you're improving!!

Any breaking news on the cause or treatment??

Hugs-
Donna

Thanks for asking Donna, so far no news on anything as far as a explanation but the vet student that I met through this post certainly went to work on it. We shared information back and forth but the end result is that so far there is nothing to prove that this is linked to the reptiles. He did notice a test in my chart that the doctors had over looked and that was interesting to me as well as made me admire him. We shared the information he passed back and forth to me with my doctors and they concured that I am missing a test that they will have preformed on me soon. Nothing major but important as well. I loved that my doctor said that vet students have a harder time getting their degree and a harder job because they have to find the facts. Vet's patients cant talk so they dig deeper for answers most times. A big thank you goes out to Jason at the University of Georgia for takeing on my case and following it. I thank him because he didn't have to get involved but he did.
I do love each and every one of you and your committment to your reptiles and this Fauna Group here. I have been anxiously following the reports on Critical Bill and right now my problems seem so minor. If you do not know he is in rough shape and there is a thread keeping us updated on him. I am so proud of how no matter what our opinions are we can put them aside and come together when one of us is hurting. There is another family on here that is in need of our help too. They have suffered a loss and need our support. WiseReptiles has set up a fund for both families. If You can please help them. Its not the amount of money, as much as it is the show of support that matters. It lets them know that this is much more than a group of people that just sit at keyboards caring about their own little world. We are much more than that. Thank you all for being the wonderful people you are, and Donna You are one that I admire alot on here. I have seen alot come and go but we can sure tell the ones that TRULY care than those that are just in it for what they can get out. A big thank you to Rich for this site making it possible. Its hard at times and sometimes I can imagine he wondered what he was thinking. Hopefully when he sees this kind of good come of it, then he knows it was worth every sleepless nite he has invested in it. Love to You all....

Two things:
1. Hospital masks will do NOTHING to prevent inhalation of bleach/ammonia/acetic acid.
2. Have you had or currently have any mites or other bug related infestations?

I ask #2 because certain bugs such as Tribolium beetles can cause allergies due to fine particulate production. Such production could manifest itself in lung issues.

Good luck and I hope you get better!

I hadnt until recently but its not mine, a friend of mine has a snake that has a mite problem that is persistent. He has used the rid a mite and other reptile stuff but thats only been in the last few months and only the one snake out of 15. A little 2 foot albino burmese. Nothing seems to help this baby. Change complete cage and he is the only one that will have them. So far I have not heard of him having a problem for the past week or so so hopefully its over. But that is the one and only time. The lung problem was here way before him.

We sit and we type and we stare at our screens
We all have to wonder what this possibly means
~
With our mouse we roam through the rooms in a maze
Looking for something or someone as we sit in a daze
~
We chat with each other, we type all our woes
Small groups we do form and gang up on our foes
~
We wait for somebody to type out our name
We want recognition but it is always the same
~
We give kisses and hugs, and sometimes flirt
In PM's we chat deeply and reveal why we hurt
~
We do form friendships - but - why we don't know
But some of these friendships will flourish and grow
~
Why is it on screens, we can be so bold
Telling our secrets that have never been told
~
Why is it we share the thoughts in our mind
With those we can't see as though we were blind
~
The answer is simple, it is as clear as a bell
We all have our problems and need someone to tell
~
We can't tell real people, but tell someone we must
So we turn to the 'puter' and to those we can trust
~
Even though it is crazy, the truth still remains
They are *Friends Without Faces* with odd little names.

This post is a roller coaster-ain't it??

Yes-we've been praying for Chuck and his family, and now that I found out about Tattoo's family loss, they're on our prayer list, too, along with a lost cat belonging to a friend from the Pangea forums and a little boy with Aplastic Anemia from Katey's kung fu class.
