In short, DON'T! Email notices are to ONLY alert you of a reply to your private message or your ad on this site. Replying to the email just wastes your time as it goes NOWHERE, and probably pisses off the person you thought you replied to when they think you just ignored them. So instead of complaining to me about your messages not being replied to from this site via email, please READ that email notice that plainly states what you need to do in order to reply to who you are trying to converse with.

Yeah, I know. They are a pain in the butt. But they pay the bills to keep my server running. Just a fact of life, I am afraid.

Want to get rid of them? Simple. Just become a Contributor level member or above and they will be gone. -> Please click HERE."

Is that too much for me to ask of you to keep this site running? Well, sorry about that. I too wish I could get everything for free. But alas.....

    Addendum: 01/10/2026
    =====================

Google Adsense ad revenue for December, 2025 was just $30 over the cost of the lease for the server running this site. So, in effect, the money providing the incentive for me to continue running this site is coming SOLELY from the paid memberships and sponsorships here. Which honestly ain't much....

Karma Abuse.

Not to seem like a dummy, but what will happen to his adds and his coin?

Well, since he can't modify his posts while he isn't here, I would assume nothing. I don't see it as our problem. He is in violation of his agreement to follow the rules by being a member.

Coin? His contributing member statues I would think means nothing to the situation. So I would assume nothing as well.
As for his donations to the site, I should let Rich address that question but it doesn't protect you here. Rich has made it clear from the beginning of Fauna that donating here doesn't give you special treatment here from the site rules. You buy a banner ad, then break the rules, no protection. You have a big name in the industry, no protection. I wouldn't want it any other way. Personally, I could care less. No other site I know of gives refunds for anything. Not that it really matters what other sites do but KS doesn't refund if your account is terminated for cause. There are many reasons why one might contribute here. Bottom-line people know or should know what to expect when donating, contributing to anywhere. He knew the rules and he also knows contributing to the site doesn't protect him from them.

The rules are posted. The infraction system and point value is posted.

Sorry Laura for the long opinion of my answer. But I know if I stated just, NOTHING. Someone would say,
why?.. He paid for it.

But this is just my opinion of the situation. He can take-up where he left off when his timeout over.

I expect nothing less from you Dennis, that's why I asked.

Plus with all of the grief that Rich has received from some of the members in the past, the purchase of a coin does protect us, even if it's protecting us from ourselves!

Being this is getting discussed here, I was looking over the infraction point values and expiration times. I received an immediate 3 day ban for this Ed Clark thing, when does this expire(believe it was 12 points)?

I'm going to guess that his has become the thread to ask a question about negative rep points so.....

With the talk of retaliatory hits and when it's not OK to use it, is there somewhere that has a little write up on when you could get in trouble for using it?

With karma I tend to forget it's there except when I come across a post that is either so good or so bad that it reminds me it's there. So I'm not sure that abuse of the negative will be a problem I come across but I'd like to be sure when I can and can't use it.

The sad truth is I think the Karma gets more attention that the BOI with a lot of people looking to purchase. I know it's hard for me not to notice those big red dots under someones name when I'm looking at adds...:shrug01:

The option for giving someone negative karma says "Particularly bad post". If someone says something like "I like peanut butter" and someone who got negative karma from this same person dings this post, well, it's pretty obvious that the post is NOT "particularly bad", and will be interpreted as being retaliatory. Or of that same someone goes back a month or more simply to find a post that they believe fits that description, that will be considered as someone obviously doing so merely to be retaliatory.

Of course, this will be a lot of gray area, but I will evaluate each case as best I can. So someone who recently got negative karma from someone would be well advised to NOT go searching through the history of posts from that person simply to ding them with negative karma. I am not going to be very pleased with anyone who wants to waste my time in such manner, and will have no compunction what so ever against booting them out of here so I don't have to waste my time in the future with similar pursuits from them. I will assume this is SOP for them, and they are causing other issues with other members as well, and this site would likely be better off without them being here.

As I mentioned before, trying to fix a system by removing it from use because of a few people abusing it seems to be unfitting punishment for everyone. So I will deal directly with those who wish to abuse it by removing it from their use, or if severe enough, simply remove them from the site completely.

Rich... we dont have karma active on my forum... so Im just throwing this out there because I dont know... never worked with it.

Is it possible to put the abusers in a different usergroup so they dont have access to karma?

Yes, but having a lot of extraneous user groups with custom permissions will sooner or later give you a complexity that you will regret as an admin.

6 days

Ok thanks. I just noticed that if you go to the infraction part of the User Cp, it states right there when the infractions expire.

Once upon a time, there was a significant karma hit associated with being banned...I think it may have gone by the wayside, though. Oddly enough, sometimes the comment that gets a person banned will also get them some good karma.

You can kick my Karma back to zero. I am heartily tired of people misunderstanding what it was originally intended for and it has become viewed as a Popularity contest, which was not (I believe) the original intent.

Perhaps the Karma button could be limited the abilty to give Karma only in the BOI threads? That should straighten up a lot of the confusion. :shrug01:

It could...but why should people not receive karma for helpful posts in a discussion forum?

Why get karma posts for being helpful? It's something people should do to feel good about themselves, not to get paid.

I think (just my opinion) that the BOI is more important and the quality of posts in there would probably skyrocket if this was the only place to receive them.

Why get karma for anything, then?
Are we making posts to feel good about ourselves? Or to share our knowledge and experience...to help other enthusiasts, regardless of the type of forum?
If the former, then it would seem that receiving karma would be desirable - what better way to stroke the ego than have people say you done good?
If the latter, though, it would seem that the karma would fall in importance...and end up serving its intended goal.
