    Google Adsense ad revenue for December, 2025 was just $30 over the cost of the lease for the server running this site. So, in effect, the money providing the incentive for me to continue running this site is coming SOLELY from the paid memberships and sponsorships here. Which honestly ain't much....

I was selling a big snapping turtle to this gentleman and I received the payment for the turtle. But the turtle happened to be bigger than I expected and it was unable to ship the way we planned. I spoke to jason about this and he got unreasonable. I told him that I would find another way for shipping. He said ok. From that point I proceeded to check various options. They would cost additional money to use. It took a few days to figure something out. Shipping a 60lb turtle isnt cheap. I told him that if i ship it through ups overnight it would be over 200.00 in shipping alone. and that delta might be an option. When we started to discuss this he started to accuse me of ripping him off. I told him to tell me what he wants me to do. He said ship me the turtle. I said ok but i need to know how he wants me to ship it. due to the weight and the size of this animal it cant be shipped "normaly". he flew off the handle and demanded his money back. Ive spent some of the payment on HIS ANIMAL. I told him that he bought this animal and now its his. Is this wrong of me to say? Its bought and paid for. i just want him to work with me a bit so he can get his animal.
 
Refund his money if he's unhappy.

Also make him aware of this thread.
 
you quoted him a price and figured shipping into it. It isn't right to go back now and ask for more money to cover the shipping. You should either refund him the full amount or ship the turtle and eat the shipping costs. he shouldn't have to pay for a mistake on your part.
 
Your ad stated it weighed 47lbs. Even if that was the correct weight, versus 60lbs, how much did you think that would cost to ship? You mentioned Delta. I agree that might be cheaper, but not by much and you need to be pre-approved to use this method. Are you an approved shipper with Delta? Or were you wanting him to wait around while you went through the process? How do you think he should "work with you a bit"? Seems like your best bet is to cut your losses and refund his money before he makes a thread here of his own.
 
I have to agree with what's already been said. You have to be careful when quoting a price, to include an accurate shipping quote. If the rate is that much higher than what you quoted and you cannot honor it, you not only have to refund 100% of your buyer's money, but you have to accept that he has good reason to not be happy.

I do have one question though...what exactly did you spend part of the money on? Whether this is a total hobby for you, or if you want to make it a full-time business, you have to have some money to take care of certain things out of your own pocket. As long as you run your business correctly, you'll get back that "front money" plus some.

Good luck with your future business. For now, all you can do is refund his money and learn how to be better prepared in the future.
 
I was guessing on the weight when i put 47 lbs. But I had it weighed and it was roughly 60lbs. I made this thread to see everyone opinions on the situation. In regards to the shipping, the reason i couldnt ship with usps is bc of the shear size. And ups is asking for over 200.00 for shipping overnight like it needs. I will take care of this either way.
 
i spent some of the money on making sure the turtle had no parasites and all that stuff. My husband recently passed so now im trying to take care of expenses and all that stuff. So this is helping us out.
 
Sorry for your loss but you need to issue the buyer a full refund. You seem to have a lot going on and you don't need this adding to it. You are not going to find a way to ship. There is a reason you don't see people selling large turtles like this - it costs more to ship than the animal is worth.
 
Refund the money to the buyer and maybe try to find a Herp. Society in your area and possibly sell to a member.

from akia-Ok the shipping will take 1 day. which aint that bad for this big guy. As far as what it will be in. It will be in a box that is lined with styrofoam that is lined with cloth so that it doesnt destroy it. It will have cold pack in there as to keep it from over heating. I have shipped big turtles like this before and have a good system worked out.

The payment can be done at wal-marts money center. you will need my name and address. I will need your info as well. name, address, phone number. you go up there and send me the money and email me the confirmation number and i go and pick it up. i will then be able to send the animal off to you first thing monday morning.
i sent the money that same day!turtle was supposed to ship monday.

akia-the dimensions of this turtle is causing a problem. I went by weight of the turtle. USPS is saying that it is to big to ship. And UPS is charging over 100 alone to ship it. so yeah its a big problem now. Yeah ive shipped big turtles, but not a turtle that is over 60lbs.
from me-in the past i pack the turtle and put him in a rubbermaid container,like 6 bucks at walmart.i screw the lid down and take it to the post office.once your there they will take it,there not gonna say its too big.plus the post office is cheaper than ups.let me know
akia-Ok this is whats going on. When I take it there in the box they weigh it and measure it. The box is 3 feet wide. I will get it to you one way or another. Dont worry about it.

akia-Its not that i dont want to be bothered. Im just really pissed off right now bc of the shipping situation. I figured it would have been fine shipping it through UPS or USPS as i have done it before. But its the size of the turtle and box thats got me all messed up right now. You can take a look for yourself. I had my brother take the turtles I have now and weighed them all. The turtle that is your is as follows.

The box is 3 1/2 ft in width by 3 ft in height.

Christina - after re-reading your initial post, it appears you feel since he sent you the money that the animal is now his and getting it to him is now his problem. This is not true. You took his money, claiming you shipped large turtles before and had a system worked out. Getting him the turtle is going to be a "big problem" as you indicated. But it is entirely YOUR problem, not the buyers. Ship the turtle or refund his money. The full amount. I do not believe you spent some of it to treat it for parasites and it would not entitle him to anything less than the full amount if you had. Do the right thing.
 
i have every email that took place in our dealings.not once was it mentioned that the turtle was being treated for any conditions.this just came up when akia started this thread.i believe it is a lie!how come you never mentioned any treatment before.when were you having it treated?saturday night when you picked up my payment?or sunday the day before you were suppossed to ship.no need to add lies to make your side more plausible.you are wrong period.any body thats wants the full email commmunications posted,i saved every 1 of them.

You told him you could ship, and now you can't figure a way how. That is your problem Christina. You need to send this guy his money back, OR ship the animal. You should've gotten a quote before telling him $125 shipped. You made that mistake, so YOU need to make up for it. A customer should never have to pay for the seller's mistake. Refund this guy's money.

Oh yea, and don't forget: One of the first rules in business is to get the guy's product to him and make sure he's satisfied BEFORE you spend his money! Otherwise you're just asking for trouble, as you've learned here.

The cost of shipping went from $100+ for UPS and then a cpl e-mails later it's over $200?
The buyer offers to add $50 to the cost of shipping and still has no answer on how/when the turtle will be shipped?

I dont believe that turtle was treated for anything.I do believe the cost of shipping is eating into any profit you thought you'ld make on this sale and you have a problem with that.

That problem is yours and yours alone...if it cost you out of pocket to ship, well then your SOL, and should have done some home work on shipping/cost shipping.

Refund 100% of his funds, or eat the cost and ship the turtle regardless of cost.

I have no need to look up anything. I would have figured that out BEFORE I took any money.
I'm sure Jason doesn't care either.He wants the turtle that he PAID for or a REFUND
