Source of Medications?

Before I ask this question, I would like to say that I am a trained and liscenced med tech. I make my own blood agar plates, do my own C & S tests, and completely understand the issues surrounding the misuse of antibiotics.

Having said all that, I'm looking for a source of injectable antibiotics (Mexican?), so I can provide healthcare to my herps at a reasonable price. Now, this is not recommened procedure for hobbyists and amateurs.

Does anyone know where to buy such items online? If so, please do not post it here, but rather email me directly at rocketmusic3@yahoo.com. Any info. greatly appreciated. Respectfully, Jack

PS No, I can't steal them from work lol

Jack,

In my opinion you are better off leaving this to a veterinarian. As you mentioned this is not recommended for hobbyists and amateurs. Yes, you are a licensed med technician but that doesn’t mean you are qualified to treat reptiles. Besides, and as you are probably aware of, buying ATB without prescription, and introducing them into the country is not legal.

Regards.

i would say yes best thing is to go to the vet... and preferably oral medications are safer than injectables (at least in reptiles)

Any livestock person can buy and use antibiotics without prescription and can buy them at feedstores etc. Of course the options are limited.

Why can't you get the meds from a vet? Are you working for one now? Most states that license Vet Techs have different levels of supervision required for different skills performed. I would think that medication admininstration would only require indirect supervision. The vet wouldn't even need to be physically present on the premises for you to treat your animals. Find a vet that is willing to trust and work with you. As a vet tech, my knowledge and skills were respected enough that I could collaborate with many vets in doing self care for my own animals. Also, depending on the state, (unfortunately in some cases), an animal owner can legally do many things to his/her own animals that s/he could not legally do to animals owned by someone else. And, in most cases, a typicall illness/infection/disorder has routine medication choices. If one is familiar with what is routine, why couldn't s/he utilize the same routine as a qualified vet?
